Trivia / Solarbabies

  • Box Office Bomb: The film was a disaster. It was in and out of wide release after a week. With a budget of $25M, it grossed a minuscule $1.5M. Opening the same day as Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home can't have helped.
  • Playing Against Type: Who would have guessed that Mel Brooks was one of the producers on this (even after The Elephant Man and The Fly)?
  • Troubled Production: Mel Brooks recounted how Solarbabies went from a little $5 million independent film turned into a $23 million disaster that nearly bankrupted him. Torrential rain on the Spanish locales, poor film stock, issues with editing, and transportation problems were among the many factors that caused Brooks to put a mortgage on his house. He lost $9 million in the process that he didn’t make back until home video and DVD sales made it up many years later.
