- Disowned Adaptation: Katherine Anne Porter strongly disliked the film, finding it vulgar and shallow.
- Fake American: British Vivien Leigh as Mary Treadwell.
- Fake Nationality: French Simone Signoret as Spanish La Condesa, Italian-born José Greco as Cuban Pepe and Puerto Rican José Ferrer as the Nazi Siegfried Rieber (who's actually Austrian), Hungarian-born Charles Korvin as Captain Thiele, Swedish Alf Kjellin as Freytag, and the American Michael Dunn as Carl Glocken.
- Friendship on the Set: Lee Marvin and Vivien Leigh became friends. When he and his partner Michelle Triola visited Leigh at her exquisite home in England, he tore up a deck of antique playing cards that they were playing with. Much to Triola's surprise, Leigh was not at all disturbed by Marvin's boorish behavior but seemed enchanted by him.
- Hostility on the Set: Stanley Kramer did not enjoy working with Oskar Werner, who refused to play the bar scene stage left. Kramer had to have the set rebuilt to accommodate the actor.
- What Could Have Been: Katharine Hepburn was first choice for Mary Treadwell, but because of Spencer Tracy's bad health she opted to continue to care for him.
