* AbilityOverAppearance: Blane was written to be a {{Hunk}} with a HeroicBuild. Molly Ringwald however had a say in the casting and picked Andrew [=McCarthy=] due to his attitude - claiming he's the type of guy she would fall in love with.
* ActorAllusion: Annie Potts's character answers the phone at the record store, "Tracks, what do you want?" similar to how she did in ''Film/Ghostbusters1984''.
* ActorInspiredElement: Jon Cryer suggested "Try a Little Tenderness" by Music/OtisRedding for his dance. His original suggestion was "State of Shock" by Music/MickJagger and Music/MichaelJackson, but the filmmakers couldn't get the rights.
* BreakthroughHit: ''Left of Center'' by Creator/SuzanneVega. She launched her songwriter career at the same time (and the video shows some traces of Ringwald´s clothing and hairstyle).
* DawsonCasting: Averted. Molly Ringwald was seventeen, and turned eighteen when the film was released. Jon Cryer however was twenty, James Spader twenty-five, Kate Vernon twenty-four, Andrew [=McCarthy=] and Alexa Kenin twenty-three. Kristy Swanson however was a teenager.
* InMemoriam: The movie is dedicated to Alexa Kenin and Bruce Weintraub. Kenin, who played Jena, was murdered in New York just before the movie was released. Set decorator/production designer Weintraub died of AIDS at age 33.
* MethodActing: James Spader shocked everyone with just how heavily he got into the character of Steff.
* RealitySubtext: Jon Cryer claims that he didn't get along with Andrew [=McCarthy=] or Molly Ringwald, lending subtext to his conflict over their relationship.
* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Test audiences didn't like the original ending where Andie and Duckie ended up together and preferred Andie to choose Blaine instead. Thus Kristy Swanson was cast to give Duckie someone to end up with.
* RomanceOnTheSet: Molly Ringwald was dating Dweezil Zappa, who plays Simon.
* StarMakingRole: For Creator/JamesSpader, and Jon Cryer.
* ThoseTwoActors: Creator/JamesSpader and Andrew [=McCarthy=] would work together the following year in ''Film/LessThanZero'' and ''Film/{{Mannequin}}''.
* ThrowItIn: When Duckie gets thrown into the girl's bathroom, he says regarding the tampon machine, "We don't have a candy machine in the boys' room". This was ad-libbed by Jon Cryer. He also ad-libbed the line, "His name is Blane? That's a major appliance, that's not a name".
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/JodieFoster turned down the role of Andie. Tatum O'Neal, Lori Loughlin, Creator/DianeLane, Creator/SarahJessicaParker and Brooke Shields were also considered.
** Creator/AnjelicaHuston and Creator/TraceyUllman were both considered for Iona.
** In a podcast interview, Creator/MollyRingwald revealed that Jennifer Beals was set to replace her in the lead unless she didn't accept, but the director Howard Deutch eventually vetoed the idea.
** Anthony Michael Hall turned down the role of Duckie, as he didn't want to get typecast. He also felt that the film was rehashing ''Film/SixteenCandles''.
** Creator/CharlieSheen auditioned for Blane.
** Creator/RobertDowneyJr. was almost cast as Duckie when the ending had Andie getting together with Duckie. Per Creator/MollyRingwald, this ending may have stuck if Downey won the role because he didn't give her the "brother vibe" Jon Cryer did.
* WordOfGay: Both Creator/MollyRingwald and Creator/JonCryer have agreed that after high school, Duckie came out of the closet and is currently a HardGay, wearing no shirt and suspenders and attending Gay Pride events. Could be considered a mix of WordOfSaintPaul and WordOfDante, of course. Keep in mind, though, that Creator/JohnHughes originally wanted Andie and Duckie to end up together, so this is not really WordOfGod.
