Trivia / Pokémon Black and White

  • Ascended Fanon: The term "Shiny Pokémon" became canonical here. An NPC in Nimbasa City uses it when telling the player that they sparkle when encountered.
  • Blooper: When first encountered on Route 7 before it begins roaming around Unova, Tornadus in Black uses the cry of its White-exclusive counterpart, Thundurus.
  • Fan Nickname: Lots and lots of them:
    • Snivy is known as Smugleaf/SmugSnake. It was called Snivy even then, but the name wasn't nearly as popular as Smugleaf (which even the game journalists were asking for! Some also call Snivy "Excalibur". Alternatively, Snively.
    • Snivy's final evolution, Serperior, is known as "Smuglord" by the fans.
    • Oshawott was known as Wotter/Derpderp/Snowoobie/Vampijumaru. With the reveal of its English name, we have Revolver Oshawott, which then inspired "Solid Snivy" and "Tepig Boss", as seen here.
    • Samurott was called Shellgun towards the beginning of the Generation.
    • Seed Bby, also known as Petilil/Churine, is gathering quite a following on the PokéCommmunity Forums.
    • Braviary is known as Colbeagle, Keith, Tomahawk, Dyna Blade, and AmeriCAW! Its pre-evo, Rufflet, is referred to as Freeglet.
    • Alomomola is known as Sexdisc/Luvhands/Hatedisc.
    • Sandile is known as Swagodile/Cool Croc/Crocostyle/Gaterrain. Its final form, Krookodile, is commonly called Kaminacroc because of his sunglasses and overall badassery.
    • Excadrill is known as Big Daddy. Many of the people who refer to Krookodile as Kaminacroc call Excadrill Simole the Digger.
    • The Dragon-type Haxorus is known as Axeface.
    • Blue Eyes White Dragon & Red Eyes Black Dragon for Reshiram and Zekrom. Unfortunately, there is no third dragon nickname for Kyurem.
    • Reuniclus is known as Gummy Bear/Booger/Jelly Green Ghost/Flying Salad Monster.
    • Tepig had too many puns to have a generally agreed nickname. Popular ones include Pignite, Pignition, Boarbecue, Hamferno, Burncon, Piglit, Spork, Keroswine and Blazorback. Pignite ended up becoming the official name of its second stage.
    • Emboar has been called Ganon, Ganonpork, Gammondorf, and Hamdalf.
    • The female Player Character is known as White. It has also been used in screenshots of her as another player; Black visits her World.
    • Don George and Swanna have both been called "Carl" for their slight resemblance to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force character while the new early bug, Sewaddle, is going by Countapillar, Bugleaf, Smugbug, Fraterpie, Collarpillar and Vampillar. A comparison.
    • Bouffalant already has too many nicknames to count, but all of them note a particular feature in its appearance. Its official English name even uses said feature as a name basis.
    • Sarcophaghost for Cofagrigus. However, that exceeds the games' character limit, so coming up with shorter names is a bit of a pastime. Another is Koffin.
    • Thanks to people mishearing his battle theme, Ghetsis is often jokingly called "DENNIS". For a short while, it also applied to Genesect when dataminers assumed Ghetsis' battle music belonged to it. Other nicknames for Ghetsis include Geechisu, Geetis and (thanks to 4chan) Gaycheese.
    • "Pokémon Gray/Grey" for the third game that never happended.
    • "Plankster" "Jokirder" and "Clowncrete" for Timburr, Gurdurr, and Conkeldurr respectively. Timburr is also called Jonny quite a bit for that plank it carries around all the time.
    • The member of the Elite Four who uses Fighting types is Westley Snipes.
    • The Elite Four was nicknamed "Mystery Inc." due to a few resemblances to the titular Scooby Doo characters. Shauntal being Velma, Grimsley being Shaggy, Caitlin being Daphne, and Marshal being Fred.
    • Swoobat is the Derp Bat.
    • Stunfisk is Derpfish.
    • Ghetsis's Hydreigon has been dubbed Haxdreigon and variations thereof.
      • Similarly, quite a few fans have taken to calling Elesa's Emolgas "demons". Although this isn't so much a nickname as it is an insult.
    • Also from 4chan, Galvantula has been dubbed "Tarantesla".
    • Throh and Sawk get called Bert and Ernie a lot. Alternatively, Judo Jim and Karate Carl.
    • Thundurus is often referred to as "Thundy", while Landorus is often called Lando or Garfield.
    • PONY for Keldeo and its resemblance to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic's character designs.
    • Elesa is often known as Lady Gaga.
  • God Never Said That: Pokemon Sunday reported that "No old characters like Oak will appear", which mutated and really got confusing when some Gen IV characters showed up in the games.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Castelia City, at least, is officially based off New York, confirming the speculation of many fans.
    • For some, N being Team Plasma's king (and/or a pawn) was this as well.
    • Many people called Tepig's final evolution being called Emboar.
  • Name's the Same:
    • Bianca (the rival) has the same name as Bianca (a character from the fifth movie of the anime).
    • Pokémon Black Version was the name of the game from a popular Haunted Cartridge Creepypasta. The 'pasta itself was later renamed Pokémon Creepy Black in the wake of the Gen 5 games' release.
    • Durant's number #632note , not #35.
  • Urban Legend of Zelda:
    • Early on, rumors of a supposed "Swimming Goggles" item that raised the user's Special Attack and accuracy whle also putting non-Water-types to sleep circulated. However, no such item exists, Dummied Out or otherwise.
    • Dataminers initially believed that Bianca was the Champion, when this isn't the case (presumably, her post-League team was misinterpreted as a Champion team).
    • With Victini, Reshiram and Zekrom being the first Pokémon to be hard-coded into never being Shiny, many rumors on how to get them to appear as such — fueled by the existence of Shiny sprites for all three in the data — circulated. However, outside of hacking, it's impossible to get them (in the Gen V games, anyway).
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Originally, Frillish and Jellicent were supposed to be just a pure Water-type species, but were changed to be Water/Ghost (a type combination that hasn't been seen prior to Generation V) for the sake of distribution. This resulted in their creator (a new artist working at Game Freak) being disappointed with the scary aspects (such as causing ships that cross its habitat to be sunken and all of the passengers on board to end up missing) being added to what was supposed to just be some normal jellyfish based on princes and princesses.
    • Stunfisk was also supposed to be a Electric/Water-type. This was changed for the sake of type distribution.
    • Deino, Zweilous and Hydreigon were originally intended to be cybernetic dragons incorporating aspects of tanks within their bodies. The track-like markings on their bellies seem to be a remnant of this.
    • It was revealed in an interview that the Pokémon Professor was originally going to be a middle-aged man with a much older father.
    • Apparently, one of Alder's tentative designs resembled Jesus.
    • Similarly, an early design for Marshal wore a hood of some sort.
