For trivia in other games, see the following:

  • Cash-Cow Franchise: This is easily PopCap Games' most profitable series, with 3 mainline games, 5 spin-offs and a boatload more from China, comics, books, toys and more.
  • Content Leak: Two beta builds of the game were leaked in 2021 by an anonymous beta tester.
  • Creator's Favorite: Game composer and vocalist Laura Shigihara's favorite plant is the Cattail. This is emphasized by how, when her name shows up in the "Zombies on Your Lawn" music video, a sprite of a Cattail shows up next to it.
  • Distanced from Current Events: Originally the Dancing Zombie was based on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" look, but not only did the popstar's estate take issue with this, Jackson himself died just a few months after the game launched. As a result, the dev team chose to redesign the character entirely.
  • Divorced Installment: The game was planned to be a sequel to Insaniquarium, one of PopCap's older games.
  • Hey, It's That Sound!:
    • The sound for unlocking an achievement is the same sound used in Peggle when you get the all pegs cleared ribbon.
    • The collection of gems in the first game is also used for Bejeweled's gem matching and Insaniquarium's own gem collecting.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes:
    • The original version of the game with the Michael Jackson sprites for the dancing zombie isn't the easiest to get ahold of these days. It has not been sold since the change, meaning your only chance to obtain that version is to either hope you can buy a used physical copy made before then, or find a torrent of that specific version.
    • Adventures became this after its closing in 2014.
    • The game was removed from PSN in 2015 for legal reasons, and has not come back. That said, those who already owned the PS3 and/or Vita versions beforehand can still download them.
  • The Merch:
    • A set of plushies with voice chips in them have been released. They include the normal mook zombie, Squash, Peashooter, and Sunflower.
    • There's also several sets of vinyl figures. Some come with the Game of the Year boxed sets of the game, some can be bought in sets of several figurines. There is also a collection of larger Funko POP! figures.
  • No Export for You:
    • Prior to December 14, 2011, if you owned an Android device and lived outside of the US or Canada, you couldn't have PvZ on Android since the game was exclusively available to the Amazon App Store, which only sells within the US and Canada. The trope was finally averted and made available over the regular Android Market worldwide on December 14, 2011.
    • Oh, and if you own an Xbox 360 but live in a country with no Xbox Live Arcade support, no PvZ Xbox for you!
    • Plants vs. Zombies Heroes was released in March 2016, but only for certain countries. It didn't get released globally until October 2016 with some added polish.
  • Port Overdosed: You can play the original PvZ on Steam, the DS, the Playstation 3, the Xbox 360, the Playstation Vita, Windows Phone 7, Android, iOS....
  • Referenced by...: Has its own page.
  • Viral Marketing: The music video and various videos of zombie cosplayers on YouTube.
  • What Could Have Been: Now has its own page.
  • Working Title: As detailed on the What Could Have Been page, Plants vs. Zombies had many working titles during its development, but the last one the game likely used before switching to Plants vs. Zombies was "Bloom and Doom" as revealed by a beta prototype.
