  • California Doubling: Most of the film was actually shot in neighbouring towns, as the real Mystic, Connecticut was a popular tourist attraction even before the movie came out. However, there were some scenes that were shot in the real town.
    • What was shot in neighbouring towns: the pizza restaurant, the Windsor family home, the Peg Leg Pub pool hall, the fishing docks and the hitchhiking incident (Stonington Borough, Connecticut); the Araújo home (Pawcatuck, Connecticut); the lobster business and the wedding church (Noank, Connecticut); Tim Travers's home and the Windsors' country club (Watch Hill, Rhode Island).
    • What was shot in Mystic: the Mystic Seaport planetarium and the Mystic River Bascule Bridge.
  • Cast the Runner-Up: Julia Roberts originally auditioned for Jojo. When Lili Taylor was given the part instead, Roberts was cast as Daisy.
  • Dawson Casting: Inverted with Annabeth Gish; she was only 16 while shooting the movie, and she was playing a high school graduate. Played straight with Vincent D'Onofrio, who was in his late 20's playing someone in his early 20's.
  • Defictionalization: After the movie, the Real Life!Mystic Pizza building was remodelled to resemble its movie counterpart.
  • Fake Nationality: Neither Annabeth Gish nor Julia Roberts who play the Araujo sisters are of Portuguese descent with the latter being of British, Irish, German and Swedish descent.
  • Real-Life Relative: First assistant director's Mark Radcliffe's daughter Porscha plays Phoebe.
  • The Red Stapler: The movie takes its name from a real pizzeria in Mystic, Connecticut. After the movie came out, demand for their pizza became so great that the owners opened a second store in nearby North Stonington and began selling their own brand of frozen pizzas at New England supermarkets.
  • What Could Have Been: Ben Affleck auditioned for the role of Charlie's younger brother, which went to Matt Damon.
