- Contractual Obligation Project: Alec Baldwin appeared in this film due to a contractual obligation to Universal Pictures. Baldwin had previously backed out of a film for Universal and signed an agreement promising the studio another film. Years later, this film was presented to him and he did it to avoid further litigation.
- Dawson Casting: Simon Lynch is supposed to be 9-years-old. He is played by 12-year-old Miko Hughes.
- Money, Dear Boy: One of the only reasons that Alec Baldwin worked on this film, alongside avoiding trouble from Universal Pictures, who had him under contract.
- Prop Recycling: Bruce Willis wears the same bomber jacket as he wore as Butch in Pulp Fiction.
- What Could Have Been: Nicolas Cage and George Clooney were considered for the role of Art Jeffries.
- Working Title: It originally had the same title as the novel it was based on, Simple Simon.
