- Black Sheep Hit: While the majority of Dern's roles have been in dramatic indie films with some kind of socio-political edge, her best known role is Dr. Ellie Sattler in the action-adventure blockbuster Jurassic Park.
- Career Resurrection: She suffered a lot of career backlash for appearing in Ellen's infamous "The Puppy Episode", claiming she didn't work for a whole year afterwards. She started to make a comeback in The New '10s first by showing up in the surprise hits The Fault in Our Stars and Wild - then getting high profile roles in Big Little Lies, The Last Jedi and Little Women.

- According to director Rian Johnson, during production of The Last Jedi, Laura simply couldn't stop saying "pew, pew" when firing her blaster while in character as Vice Admiral Holdo. If you look closely, some of that actually made it into the film.
- Dern ruined a few takes early on while filming The Last Jedi simply because she was overwhelmed from being in the vicinity of the actual C-3PO.
