* ActingForTwo: Sev'ral Timez consists of five characters, but are voiced by three actors. You try to sort it out.
* ActorAllusion:
** Creator/BrianBloom is no stranger to voicing characters in ''Street Fighter''-type fighting games; he played Comicbook/CaptainAmerica in ''VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3'' (and ''WesternAnimation/TheAvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes'', for that matter).
** This isn't the first time Creator/JeffBennett voiced a [[JustForFun/CandleJack super creepy character]].
** Also, Giffany isn't the first superpowered {{Yandere}} Jessica [=DiCicco=] [[WesternAnimation/AdventureTime has played]].
** [[Music/{{NSYNC}} Lance Bass]] knows a thing or two about being in boy bands. One of the clones even does *NSYNC's signature "Bye Bye Bye" move.
** Creator/AlexHirsch's sister Ariel has a voice cameo in "Boyz Crazy," as a crazy fan of Sev'ral Timez, which, according to Alex, was how she was with NSYNC (and Lance Bass in particular, who voiced one of the band members in this episode).
** In Blendin's Game, Blendin Blandin tells Lolph and Dundgren that he will continue stammering until the twins are found. The voice actor, Justin Roiland, voices the title characters of WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty, two characters that stammer a lot.
** In ''Carpet Diem'', Niki Yang's character, Candy Chiu, observes that someone "has the [[WesternAnimation/AdventureTime voice of a robot]]."
** Creator/NathanFillion [[VillainWithGoodPublicity as a total jerk who's nevertheless adored by the public]]? [[WebOriginal/DrHorriblesSingAlongBlog Sounds familiar]].
*** It's also a little funny that Preston Northwest, a snooty, rich, member of the 1%, who takes advantage of lower class citizens, is the exact type of person that Captain Mal hates.

* BilingualBonus: In 'Fight Fighters', when Rumble defeats Dipper, his victory pose mimics that of [[StreetFighter Akuma]]. However, unlike Akuma's kanji 天 (meaning Heaven), the kanji on Rumble's back is 屁 (meaning a fart, or alternatively something so worthless it's not worth considering - either interpretation satisfies the joke).
* ChannelHop: The first season premiered its episodes on Creator/DisneyChannel, while the second season had a majority of its episodes first air on Creator/DisneyXD.
* CowboyBebopAtHisComputer: Surprisingly and unfortunately happened in a Disney Channel Scandinavia miniseries called ''The Mystery of Gravity Falls'' (not to be confused with the fan-run Website/YouTube channel of the same name). It was a 6-part series that [[ViewersAreGoldfish repeated the same things over and over again]] and, of course, got some things completely wrong. For example, claiming that "ONWARDS AOSHIMA!" was a big mysterious clue when it was just a reference to John Aoshima, who was a director on the show's first season.
* CreatorCameo:
** In addition to [[DescendedCreator voicing four major characters]], Creator/AlexHirsch voices Quentin Trembley, the gnomes, and several of the members of Sev'ral Timez.
** Former writer/creative director Michael Rianda voices Lee, Thompson and Mr. Poolcheck.
* CrossDressingVoices:
** Grenda is voiced by Carl Faruolo.
** Grunkle Stan momentarily sounds like a woman after accidentally drinking voice-altering tonic.
** Celestabellebethabelle from "The Last Mabelcorn" is voiced by Sam Marin.
** The "Between the Pines" featurette revealed that Abuelita's voice actor is ''Matt Chapman''.
** In the Russian dub, Gideon is voiced by a woman.
* DawsonCasting: 12-year old Dipper is voiced by Jason Ritter, who's in his mid-thirties, same with his twin sister Mabel who's voiced by Creator/KristenSchaal.
** Wendy is voiced by Linda Cardellini, who's in her late thirties.
** Pretty much any kid on the show, who's around Dipper's and Mabel's age, are voiced by adults, same with the teenagers.
* {{Defictionalization}}:
** [[https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/639562211942207489 A fan sent to Alex Hirsch]] a homemade "Dungeons, Dungeons and More Dungeons".
** Some official pieces of merch are Dipper's hat and Grunkle Stan's fez.
** Journal #3 is being published as an official book.
* DescendedCreator: Creator/AlexHirsch does the voice of both Stan and Soos, as well as recurring characters like Old Man [=McGucket=], President Trembley, Bill Cipher, and Mayor Befufflefumpter.
* EngineeredHashtag: [[AC:#[=TakeBackTheFalls=]]] was used to promote the GrandFinale. True to the fans, some ads [[http://imgur.com/S1Sn2WE hid it]] as a FreezeFrameBonus.
* ExecutiveMeddling: ''Not'' the show ending after two seasons, as Alex Hirsch made sure to emphasize that it was entirely his own decision for quite a while, but it was because of the Disney execs that he didn't tell everyone right when he made that decision, as they hoped he'd change his mind about ending Disney XD's highest rated show.
* FanCommunityNickname: Tumblr Fans of the show are called Fallers.
* FanNickname:
** [[spoiler: [[EldritchAbomination Bill Cipher]]]] was known as "Mr. Pyramid" and "ACE" before being properly introduced. After being introduced, people started calling him a "Magical Dorito", or [[TheIlluminati "The Illuminacho"]] In a similar vein, [[BillNyeTheScienceGuy Bill Cy the Triangle Guy.]]
** Fans of ''WesternAnimation/TotalDrama'' would consider "Boyz Crazy" (a season 1 episode where Wendy dumps Robbie) the sequel to ''[[WesternAnimation/TotalDrama Greece's Pieces]]", given that Dipper became the "New Alejandro" for having Wendy dump Robbie, similar to how Courtney dumped Duncan for the tension that Alejandro caused between them and Gwen.
** "Hunkle Stan" became prevalent after the season 2 opener "Scary-Oke" aired and many fans confessed an attraction to Stan in full-blown {{Badass}} mode smashing zombie heads. It's even been addressed [[http://busket.tumblr.com/post/127420628998/shit-hes-on-to-us semi-canonically]]. Naturally, there's a substantial following for [[spoiler:Hunkle Ford]] as well.
** While the name "Bipper" for Bill-possessed Dipper in the episode "Sock Opera" appeared in the episode itself, it was only used once, by Mabel ("[[BreadEggsBreadedEggs Bill-Dipper…BIPPER!]]"). The fandom uses it by default, often treating Bipper as a separate character from Dipper, and frequently extends the formula as shorthand for non-canon cases of Bill possession (i.e. "Babel" = Bill-Mabel). Not to be confused with [=BillDip=] (the ship), although [[MindGameShip there is some uncomfortable overlap.]]
--> '''Alex Hirsch:''' The question was about Bill-Dipper, or ''"Bipper,"'' as Mabel called him. That was, again, another one where I added that line, like, at the ''last second.'' * IKnewIt:
** "Gideon Rises": [[spoiler:Stan has Book 1 and he is aware of the crazy supernatural stuff that happens in town but lies about it]].
** "Into the Bunker": Wendy [[spoiler: knows about Dipper's crush on her]] and [[spoiler:the author of the books has 6 fingers.]].
** "Scaryoke": [[spoiler: Soos becomes a zombie.]]
** "Society of the Blind Eye": [[spoiler: Old Man [=McGucket=] was intimately involved with the mysteries of Gravity Falls before he went crazy -- though he turned out ''not'' to be the author of the journals, as everyone assumed, but merely the true author's lab assistant.]]
** "Not What He Seems": [[spoiler: The author of the books is Stan's brother and Stan was trying to use the machine to bring him back. This one is particular is the culmination of the infamous "Stanley" or "Stan's Twin" theory, which was very well known but often a hot subject of debate. (Though basically everyone assumed that the lost twin was Stanley and Grunkle Stan was Stanford, as he was called in the show itself prior to the reveal that it was actually the other way around.)]]
** "Dipper and Mabel Vs The Future": Mabel becomes so afraid of the future after Gravity Falls, [[spoiler:she breaks the Rift,]] something that a majority of the fandom had predicted since the reveal of its existence.

* {{Irony}}: Disney once tried to make a cartoon called "Poopdeck" and it's clearly a rip off of Cartoon Network's "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" which happens to be created by Thurop Van Orman. Poopdeck was never made, however Thurop must be cool with Disney if he ended up as the voice of Gideon Gleeful. As a bonus, the Flapjack episode "Panfake" is a TakeThat to this fact!
* IronyAsSheIsCast:
** Probabilitor is disgusted to find apple slices in his lunch, while Weird Al Yankovic is a vegan.
** Cecil Baldwin, [[Podcast/WelcomeToNightVale The preternatural Voice of Night Vale]] is also the most normal man in all of Gravity Falls, Tad Strange.
** See above with Thurop Van Orman as Lil' Gideon despite Disney trying to rip off his show.
* {{Jossed}}:
** Before [[spoiler: Bill Cipher]] was revealed as a character, it was assumed that the triangle at the end of the theme song was just there for show and would have no in-show significance. It wasn't until the creator [[https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/274011403210326016 reassured a fan that the show would return from hiatus during the first season]] that the fanbase began to speculate about the character's role.
** [[spoiler: Old Man [=McGucket=] is not the author of the journals.]]
** Despite the occasional allusion to Judaism, the Pines aren't canonically Jewish.
** [[spoiler: Grunkle Stan is Stan''ley'' and the Author is Stan''ford''. Most fans had the names swapped around in their theories prior to the airing of "A Tale of Two Stans", not expecting Grunkle Stan to take Stanford's name in order to hide his brother's disappearance.]]
** [[spoiler: ''Neither'' of the two Stans are Dipper and Mabel's grandfather. It was a popular theory for them to be Stanford's, with the other option being Grunkle Stan merely ''pretending'' to be their uncle after the incident thirty years ago. It turns out that the Stans were in a family of ''five'' with the last, previously unknown sibling, being Shermy.]]
*** [[spoiler: The fact that the Stans were a two sibling family is another Jossed theory.]]
* ManOfAThousandVoices: Alex Hirsch voices at least five different characters in the show, and they all have their own distinct voice.
** More specifically, he voices: Stan, Soos, the gnomes, Bill Cipher, Quentin Trembley, Old Man [=McGucket=], Norman, Paper Jam Dipper, and additional background characters, including Mayor Befufftlefumpter, ancient and reclusive mayor of Gravity Falls.
** Music/GreyDeLisle also voices many incidental characters on the show, some of the most notable being Mrs. Gleeful in "Little Dipper," the Summerween Superstore clerk and Gorney in "Summerween," Grunkle Stan's new voice in "Bottomless Pit," and the woman who asks Soos for directions and ends up falling in love with him in "Carpet Diem."
* NamesTheSame: Same company example: The Lamby Lamby Dance in the episode, "The Inconveniencing", shares its name with a character on Disney Junior's ''WesternAnimation/DocMcStuffins''.
* OldShame: Alex Hirsch is, according to a [[http://www.reddit.com/r/gravityfalls/comments/1kgq85/i_am_alex_hirsch_creator_of_gravity_falls_ask_me/cbosezb?context=3 reddit thread]], not terribly fond of the 11-minute pilot used to pitch the show.
-->"Any chance we'll see the full unaired pilot at some point in the future?"
-->"Oh lord I hope not. That thing was a mess, haha! That would be like showing you awkward photos from my high school prom. We all have dark horrible secrets. That 11 minute Flash pilot was mine."
* OneOfUs:
** Someone working on the show is madly in love with ''Franchise/StreetFighter''. And ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2''. And ''VideoGame/PacMan''.
** Certain tropes in this site are sometimes dropped in episodes and on staff comments. The finale explicitly refers to the "Law of {{Weirdness Magnet}}ism" that keeps anomalies within Gravity Falls.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Strangely enough, in a commercial for Gravity Falls mealbags at Subway, Kristen Schaal does not voice Mabel. Even stranger, all of the dialogue for the twins in that CM is taken from clips of previous episodes, and they didn't dub over Jason Ritter's voice for Dipper. Maybe Kristen Schaal just doesn't like Subway.
** Creator/NathanFillion voices Preston Northwest in season 2 while another actor voiced him in "Irrational Treasure".
* OutOfOrder: Disney XD in the UK airs "[[Recap/GravityFallsS1E1TouristTrapped Tourist Trapped]]" as the fifth episode of the first season, and "[[Recap/GravityFallsS2E1Scaryoke Scaryoke]]" as the third episode of the second season.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** Thurop Van Orman's previous famous role, [[WesternAnimation/TheMarvelousMisadventuresOfFlapjack Flapjack]], is a kind-hearted, happy, naive and very innocent boy. Meanwhile his role here, Gideon, is anything [[FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon but.]]
** Tad Strange, the most normal guy in Gravity Falls, is voiced by Cecil Baldwin, who's role as Cecil Palmer in Welcome to Night Vale is ''[[{{Understatement}} decidedly]]'' less normal.
* PromotedFanboy:
** Emmy Cicierega (sister of Creator/NeilCicierega), who has done [[http://emmyc.tumblr.com/tagged/gravity-falls fanart]] for the show, [[https://twitter.com/EmmyCic/status/418164421564055552 now works on the show as a storyboard artist.]]
** Alex Hirsch himself is a big fan of WebAnimation/HomestarRunner [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bmlAv8RPCk as shown here]]. He openly admits working/being friends with the site's creator, Matt Chapman is a dream come true.
* RealLifeRelative: If Behind the Voice Actors is to be believed, the voices of Dipper and Robbie in the Hebrew dub are brothers.
* RelationshipVoiceActor: A good amount of the cast is a mini ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime'' reunion: Candy is BMO and Lady Rainicorn, Mabel is Jake Jr., Blendin Blandin and Bobby Renzobbi are Lemongrab, Pacifica is Susan Strong, Tambry and .[=GIFfany=] are Flame Princess, [[Creator/JohnDiMaggio Manly Dan]] is Jake, [[Creator/JeffBennett the Summerween Trickster]] is Choose Goose, [[Creator/DeeBradleyBaker Waddles]] is Cinnamon Bun, and [[Creator/StephenRoot Bud Gleeful]] is Martin.
* ScheduleSlip:
** Premieres between episodes ''within the same season'' in the US can be anywhere from two weeks to four months. It took over a year for the first season to air, and it took another year for the second season to make it on-air. In fact, Alex Hirsch himself was happily surprised when he learned that the second season would premiere earlier than he initially believed.
** Alex Hirsch learned his lesson from when it happened in Season 1, and constructed Season 2 more like two mini-seasons, suspecting correctly that there would be a long hiatus at that point.
** For the first few episodes of Season 2, they would air on Disney XD Monday and then on the Disney Channel Friday. But after ''Little Shop of Horrors'' it's now ''months'' before new episodes air on Disney Channel.
** The hiatuses have happened so often and the gaps are so long that some more conspiratorially minded fans believe that Disney is [[ScrewedByTheNetwork trying to kill the show]], when ironically, it's the opposite - instead they're trying to milk the show for as much money as it's worth due to the second season being the final one and being unable to convince Hirsch to continue the series.
* TalkingToHimself:
** Grunkle Stan, Soos, Old Man [=McGucket=], and Bill Cipher, who are all voiced by Alex Hirsch, who also voices several other minor characters.
** Literally in the episode "Double Dipper" with Dipper and all his clones.
** In the Russian dub, Grunkle Stan & [[spoiler: his twin brother Ford]] are voiced by the same voice actor, as are Wendy & Gideon.
* ThrowItIn: The credits scene of "Weirdmageddon Part 1" is simply Louis CK being allowed to go nuts.
* TrollingCreator: Creator/AlexHirsch is the current page image for the trope, with [[https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/536054960018825217 this]] being the most infamous example of his shenanigans.
** He saved the biggest one of all for the series finale, as [[spoiler:the ten symbols that appear at the beginning and end of every episode, causing every fan to wrack their brains about their meaning and what each one represents, turn out to be an ancient prophecy about the people who can defeat Bill...and ends up being completely meaningless when Stan wrecks it.]]
* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: "The Stanchurian Candidate" slipped into it during production, as by the time it aired, news of the following year's United States presidential campaign had been hijacked by the cartoonishly incompetent antics of Donald "When did we beat Japan at anything?" Trump, meaning it would have been a more prudent political satire to have Stan's ideas be completely successful.
* UrbanLegendOfZelda: There is a picture circulating the Internet of [[Franchise/TheSlenderManMythos the Slender Man]] watching Dipper and Mabel from the background in one of the episodes. This is not the case; viewing the episode itself yields no Slender Man.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** [[http://brigetteb.blogspot.com/2012/06/gravity-falls.html The early concept art]] shows several possible designs for the characters.
** Creator/NeilCicierega composed [[http://neilcicierega.tumblr.com/tagged/gravity-falls two unused themes]] for the show, and [[http://neilblr.com/post/142982667678 an unused]] VillainSong for Bill cut from "Weirdmageddon Part 1".
** There was going to be an episode based on the David Bowie film ''Film/{{Labyrinth}}''. Mabel would love the movie, but Dipper would hate it due to a fear of puppets. Dipper wouldn't admit to being afraid of the puppet; he would just call the movie dumb. Mabel would summon the Goblins to take Dipper away so she could watch the film. The Goblins would come out of the film take Dipper to the Labyrinth. [[{{David Bowie}} The Goblin King]] would try to get Mabel to go through the labyrinth to find Dipper, but Mabel would instead want to spend time with the Goblin King. The episode would end with Dipper admitting his fear of puppets. [[{{ExecutiveMeddling}} The episode wasn't made because the studio execs]] didn't think the audence would get the reference, but they still managed to sneak a ''Labyrinth'' reference into one of the "Mabel's Guide to Life" shorts (where Mabel, Grenda and Candy dress Soos up as the Goblin King for one of their "flash makeovers").
** Alex Hirsch wanted Creator/BobOdenkirk to play Stan but [[https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/373275648136998912 he turned the offer down.]]

** [[Creator/DannyDeVito Danny [=DeVito=]]] also [[https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch/status/566480600609992705 turned down a role in the show.]]
** In an interview, Hirsch revealed that Bill Cipher was originally meant to play a much smaller role in the series, playing a comic relief role by merely invading Dipper's dreams and yelling conspiracy theories at him just to annoy him.
** Originally, Gideon was meant to become the mayor of Gravity Falls as part of his plot.
*** He eventually does attempt this in The Stanchurian Candidate, with help from his father.
** TheStinger for ''[[Recap/GravityFallsS2E6LittleGiftShopOfHorrors Little Gift Shop of Horrors]]'' was originally going to involve a TwistEnding where the viewer was actually Creator/MNightShyamalan, but they were unable to get the director to agree to the joke.
** In the original script for Weirdmageddon Part II, Dipper was going to [[http://poinsixer.tumblr.com/image/133903643827 kill Dippy Fresh by snapping his neck.]] Take one guess as to why that didn't make it into the episode.
** The Journal was originally going to have been called "Dr. Crackpot's Index of the Damned."
** There was a discarded episode called ''Jimmy Snakes,'' where an old biker friend of Stan's came to town, and he had a Ghost Rider-esque curse.
** Gideon's hair was originally going to be revealed to be a wig concealing his parasitic, half-formed conjoined twin brother.
** The show was initially planned to go on for three seasons, but worries of the quality of another season and Alex exhausting himself during the first season cut it down to two instead, which explains the season finale-like nature of "Not What He Seems" and somewhat faster pacing.
*** The first season was actually so exhausting that Hirsch seriously considered ending the show there, cliffhanger and all. He credits Jon Stewart with convincing him to give the story a proper ending.
** Alex really wanted Creator/DavidDuchovny and Creator/GillianAnderson ([[Series/TheXFiles Mulder and Scully]]) to have a role on the show but they were too busy.
* WordOfGod: Alex Hirsch, for all intents and purposes, is incredibly young to be the creator and show-runner of a Disney animated TV series, and frequently connects with his fans while answering questions on his [[https://twitter.com/_AlexHirsch Twitter feed]], and is into a lot of the same nostalgic things from the same time periods of the fans.
** Wendy's middle name is Blerble.
** Dipper, Mabel and Stan's eyes are brown (Mabel's green eyes in "The Inconviniencing" are implied to be a result of overdosing on Smile Dip), Wendy's are green, and Li'l Gideon's are blue. As for Soos? "It's a mystery, dude!"
** Mabel is the older of the twins by 5 minutes.
** [[spoiler: Between Stan and his twin brother Ford, Ford is the older of the two by 15 minutes.]]
** [[spoiler: Ford not only has six fingers on each hand, but six toes on each foot.]]
** Hirsch describes the show as ''Series/TwinPeaks'' meets ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''.
* WorkingTitle: "Northwest Mansion Mystery" was first announced as "Northwest Mansion Noir".
* WriteWhatYouKnow:
** Alex Hirsch based the series on the childhood summers he and his twin sister spent camping with their great-aunt.
** "Dungeons, Dungeons, & More Dungeons" was inspired by a time during the production of ''WesternAnimation/TheMarvelousMisadventuresOfFlapjack'' when Creator/PendletonWard and [[WesternAnimation/OverTheGardenWall Patrick McHale]] invited Hirsch try a game of ''Tabletop/DungeonsAndDragons''.
-->'' I asked what the rules were, and they said, “It’s a game of imagination! There are no rules!” and then proceeded to argue about the rules for an hour and a half. I haven’t played since. But I should probably give it another try.''
* WriteWhoYouKnow:
** Dipper is based on Alex Hirsch himself and each of the other main characters on people he knows. Mabel is based on Hirsch's twin sister Ariel, Grunkle Stan on their Grandpa Stan, Soos on Hirsch's one-time roommate Jesus and Wendy on a girl he had a crush on in his youth.
** Wendy's list of ex-boyfriends [[http://ariel-is-mabel.tumblr.com/post/41441015383/instead-of-doing-ask-ariel-today-im-doing uses the names of real people]] Ariel Hirsch had crushes on.

!!Misc:
* The location of Gravity Falls: a postcard in the first episode puts Gravity Falls almost dead center of the state, in Crook County. However, in season two, the episode Scary-okey puts the location around Malheur National Forest.
** Never mind that it looks like [[TheOtherRainforest the west side of the Cascades]] at times.
* One of the last episodes pins the Mystery Twins' birthday as August 31, meaning that they're Virgos. Dipper fits the discription of Virgo ('smart, analytic'), Mabel not so much.
