Trivia / God of War Series
aka: God Of War

  • Actor Allusion:
  • Casting Gag: The series did this twice: Perseus is voiced by Harry Hamlin and Hercules is voiced by Kevin Sorbo, roles the actors previously played in the original Clash of the Titans and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys respectively.
  • I Knew It!:
    • The Titans' betrayal.
    • How Kratos "defeats" Aphrodite. Not to mention the fact that Aphrodite would be the...ahem..."opponent" for the sex minigame.
    • Many fans guessed that the grave digger from the original game was Zeus. The revelation in Ghost of Sparta is quite anticlimatic: you just have to select this character in arena mode, or see his name in the credits.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Jennifer Martin is well known for voicing sexy characters like Ms. Sarah Bellum in Powerpuff Girls. In God of War, she plays Euryale, a morbidly obese gorgon.
  • Meaningful Release Date: All but twonote  of the games have been released in March, the month named for the Roman God of War, Mars. In addition, God of War III was released March 16. This may be a reference to John 3:16 in the Bible, as the series has some possible Christian overtones, III most of all.
  • The Other Darrin: Just take a look at the character sheet. Practically every character to appear in more than one game has had this happen at some point or another. Part of it can be attributed to the fact that all of the gods were completely redesigned between the first and second game, other times it's just good old-fashioned recasting.
  • Self-Deprecation: Meta-example. Series creator David Jaffe has stated that he finds the games' combat to be shallow compared to other games in the genre, and that he would have made the series a little differently if it were a new IP today. Possibly downplayed, since he never expressed explicit dissatisfaction with the mechanics, and even went on record to bluntly say he is not decrying the games themselves.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • In the third game, they planned for Aphrodite to draw a dagger in the middle of the sex mini-game and try to stab Kratos, forcing you to win a Quick Time Event to survive, but changed their minds.
    • This interview, (content starts 10 minutes in) reveals an alternate story for God of War 3. Zeus would have been killed at the beginning of the game and the gods from Egyptian Mythology and Norse Mythology would fight the Olympians and Titans for control over the world. The game would end with all the gods dead, Kratos killing himself to reunite with his family and The Three Wise Men following the Star of David. The Three Wise Men following the Star of David was hinted in the second game. It appears as one of the pictures in the Sequel Hook room.
    • Kratos originally looked much different.
    • The original game contained several bonus videos hinting where the series could go next, showing Atlas' corpse being discovered in the desert by modern archaeologists who would explore the temple's contents. Another video revealed the existence of Kratos' brother, who ended up in the Underworld and became a demon seeking revenge against Kratos for abandoning him. This concept would be recycled for the Ghost of Sparta spin-off, though slightly altered.
    • The first two games had a Once per Episode boss fight with a Gorgon sister - Medusa and Euryale, respectively. The third game would have featured Stheno as the last remaining sister, but she ended up being cut and not even making past the concept art. She would later appear in Ascension multiplayer mode, though as an stage hazard rather than a boss character. Oddly enough, she is never faced by Kratos during the story mode.
    • Artemis was planned to be the a playable character in Ascension multiplayer mode with some concept art being developed, where she would have looked like a centaur-like being. This was scrapped likely because it would have been difficult to implement in the game's system.
