Trivia / Expelled

  • Executive Meddling: Well, distributor meddling. The film originally used "Imagine" by John Lennon as background music to what sort of civilization would be created by a society that had shoved religion aside. The footage it backed was of the USSR. Yoko Ono disapproved of this use of John's music and sued for infringement. It was ultimately declared Fair Use, but the video distributor cut the offending footage from the DVD anyway.
  • Streisand Effect: A screening of Expelled was held in the Mall of America in Minnesota. The noted Minnesota atheist blogger and biologist PZ Myers, whom the makers of the film had interviewed, signed up for tickets to the event. While waiting to get into the movie, he was pulled aside and asked to leave, as the producers didn't want him in the theater, since they had kinda, sorta interviewed him under false pretenses and didn't want to be called out on it. So he left, but his family and guest were allowed in. That guest? Much more widely noted British atheist and biologist Richard Dawkins. Who was also interviewed by the producers for the movie kinda, sorta under false pretenses. And he did call them out on it, after the movie was aired. You can listen to Dawkins and Myers discuss the incident here.
