Trivia / Eddsworld

Go To

  • Accent Depundent: "Beaster Bunny", the first proper Eddisode headed by Matt Hargreaves, opens with show Matt complaining about Tom's car... but pronounced in Edd's accent, it sounds like "TomSka", aka the previous showrunner, and the complaints are criticisms of Ridgewell's management phrased as criticisms of a vehicle.
  • Acting for Two:
    • Edd, Tom, Matt and their future counterparts in "WTFuture" are respectively voiced by themselves.
    • In addition to Edd, Edd Gould voiced Larry in "Spares".
    • Tom's Tales are fully voiced by Tom Ridgewell.
    • Taken to its most literal extreme in "Casting Call", with Matt (the character) and Matt Hargreaves (the Animated Actor), who are portrayed as separate entities.
  • Actor Leaves, Character Dies: Eddie Bowley had planned to leave the show after Legacy, so the character he voices, Jon, was killed off in "The End" and didn't return for Beyond.
  • Ascended Fanon: "Saloonatics" depicts Edd as being chubby, Matt being the tallest, and Tom being short, which are very common bodytypes for the three in fan works.
  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!:
    • Due to Memetic Mutation, the phrase "Well, well, well" is commonly attributed as Eduardo's catchphrase, when he only really said this in his introduction in "Hammer and Fail Part 1". In his next major appearance, he's actually introduced with the phrase "Nice satellite, loser!" instead. He does however say "Well, well, well" shortly before he and Edd engage in battle, although it's followed by "Look who finally showed up!"
    • At one point, This Very Wiki used to list "Kitten shopping!" as one of Tom's catchphrases, possibly due to it being featured on official merchandise of Tom. In reality, this line was only said once, in "Spares", and was said by a clone of him, implied to be defective no less.
  • Character Outlives Actor: After Edd Gould's death in 2012, his character was recast to be voiced by Tim Hautekiet in the Legacy era and his brother George Gould in the Beyond era.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • TomSka didn't like the way Tord was written off, saying it raised more questions than answers.
    • Tom isn't a fan of when he was put as showrunner, feeling he ended up nearly putting Eddsworld in the ground. It got worse due to the fandom's toxic side getting to him, resulting with him basically leaving the Eddsworld community and even stating he wants nothing to do with it anymore. Fortunately, Tom would later return to the community, wanting focus more fully on the positives and good memories of Eddsworld. However he's no longer the showrunner nor does he voice his character anymore in the show.
    • Edd admitted at one point that he wasn't a fan of Laurel from the episode "MovieMakers", stating that she "needed more work". His opinion on her was likely not helped by the fact that Edd and Tom had disagreements as to just how they were going to work with her character, resulting in her being permanently written out of the show after just one appearance.
    • There is a joke in "Tom's Tales of Brilliance", in which ghost Tom looks up a woman's skirt and gets an erection. Tom stated that he was only sending Edd voice clips for him to animate and did not need to provide any notes, but he strongly opposed Edd attempting to incorporate any penis jokes into the show. When Edd managed to sneak one joke into the cartoon, Tom was infuriated.
    • Jesse Zhang would like to forget having animated "Tom's Tales of Crazy".
    • Considering the website's FaQs page very much tells fans to "move on" and "Fan Service 2" featured him become visibly irritated at an email asking about the topic, it's pretty clear Matt as well is tired of hearing about people wondering why Tord didn't return for the revived era of the show.
    • "Eddsworld: Legacy" co-show runners Tom Ridgewell and Eddie Bowley did not support "Eddsworld: Beyond", as they felt blindsided by the show's continuing, and the show's ending was undermined.
  • Creator's Favorite: Edd's favorite episode was "WTFuture". Tom's is "Saloonatics".
  • Creator's Pest:
    • Bing and Matt aren't fond of Kim and Katya and the episode they appear in, "The Dudette Next Door", claiming "it didn't age well". For a long time, they were even ignored in the official art posted by the crew on social media, which featured references to several older episodes and even to more obscure characters such as Loud Bob note ; They eventually appeared in a drawing of Katya proposing to Kim, though with their designs heavily revised to be closer to the show's usual art style.
    • The "Eddsworld: Beyond" crew don't seem particularly fond of Tord, with an April Fools joke posted on the Eddsworld Extra channel editing him out of older episodes and "The Chronicles of Santa" featuring a caveman version of Tord that is immediately killed off.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices:
    • Rachel Kiki, a nonbinary person who uses they/them pronouns, voices Tamara, who is female, in Beyond.
    • There's also a couple of instances where minor female characters are obviously and comedically voiced by male voice actors such as Eduardo's grandmother and the snooty English kidnapping victim.
  • The Danza:
    • As part of being based off them, Edd, Tom, Matt, and Tord were all named after their real life counterparts.
    • The Evil Director mostly shares his real name, Christopher Bingbong, with his voice actor Christopher Bingham.
  • Deleted Scene: Just A Bit Crazy was supposed to be longer. Only about the first 70 seconds were animated, but later scenes were scrapped and only the first 25 seconds were published in the final video.
  • Development Hell: The Beyond Eddisodes have been apparently planned since "The End" happened, and were supposed to start uploading in January 2018, but the month and then year came and went with no new Eddisodes and few updates, with only comics happening here and there. This lull would continue until August 1, 2020, with the first Beyond Eddisode, "Fan Service 2", being released on said day.
  • Died During Production: Edd passed away from cancer in March 25, 2012. He left behind the first part of a two-part Eddsworld episode ("Space Face") and possibly a lot of other ideas that will never be seen, such as an old west episode, whose premise was eventually reworked in Legacy into "Saloonatics".
  • Doing It for the Art: The infamous BBC story asidenote , it was more or less confirmed by Matt and such that Edd never wanted to take Eddsworld out of the internet and wanted the series to be involving himself and his friends, even if it meant declining many deals that would have gotten him monetary gain.
  • Fan Community Nickname: The fans are affectionately called "Eddheads" by the showrunners.
  • Flip-Flop of God: Tom claimed initially that the final battle in "The End" was a metaphor for Edd's cancer battle, but later admitted that was a lie to try and make the finale seem deeper, and was in fact based off plans he and Edd had previously had for a different series.
  • Hostility on the Set:
    • According to Edd, Tom and Tord interacted directly with one another when he had computer problems, leading to them finding out they weren't fond of each other. Not much is known other than Tord making fun of Tom for his religious views, and the two later making comics where the punchline is the other dying. However the grudge slowly faded out and both have buried the hatchet, with Tord apologizing for mocking Tom's religion in his lost explanation video, and Tom confirming that bantering with Tord when they were pubescent was not a contributing factor in making Tord a villain in the End.
    • Chris O'Neil called out Tom for putting ASDF Movie references in "Fun Dead", which he saw as disrespectful, and for other grievances. This likely caused him to have his role of Eduardo be recasted to Brock Baker.
  • I Am Not Spock: Post-Edd's death, Tom Ridgewell stressed that the characters are completely different entities from the people voicing them. Matthew Hargreaves jokingly stated that none of the characters are gay, except Tom before claryfying that off-screen, the characters are anything the fandom wants them to be. More obscurely, in Tord Larsson's video in which he explains why he left Eddsworld, of which only a transcript, audio, and the ending clip survive, Tord stated that the fandom need to distinguish the difference between him and his character, who he describes as a "parody" of him.
  • Missing Episode:
    • "Zombeh Attack 1" and "Halloween Special 2007" were removed from the series' official YouTube channel due to their usage of copyrighted music. Both were reposted on "Eddsworld Extra" channel in 2016 with the offending music replaced with original scores.
    • Several animations also are available on Newgrounds but not on YouTube or vice-versa. Some of them were at least also posted on "Eddsworld Extra" with new music, such as "Snobody", but others never were due to the copyrighted music being impossible to replace, such as "Edd vs. Randomness". During Eddsworld Legacy, the only Eddisodes published on Newgrounds were "The Snogre", "Date Night" and both parts of "The End", with the rest being exclusive to YouTube (including the second part of Space Face, despite the first part having been posted on Newgrounds). As of 2020, all animations are posted on both platforms.
  • The Original Darrin: Chris O'Neill left the series after initially voicing Eduardo in "Hammer and Fail", but returned in "Casting Call" to voice himself and get into an argument with his replacement, Brock Baker. As of Beyond, Baker is still the voice of Eduardo, but O'Neill returned to voice other characters.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Tord Larsson and Tomas Ridgewell themselves are a case of this, as their characters were originally voiced by Alex L'Abbé in the very early episodes because they didn't have working microphones back then.
    • In the Legacy Eddisodes, Edd Gould was replaced with Tim Hautekiet as the voice of Edd.
    • As of 2020, Edd is voiced by Edd Gould's brother George.
    • Starting from "PowerEdd", Eduardo's original voice actor, Chris O'Neill, was replaced by Brock Baker. O'Neill would return as himself in "Casting Call", where he and Baker argue over the role.
    • In "The End", Tord was voiced by Jamie Spicer-Lewis, as opposed to his real life inspiration, Tord Larrson. According to the real-life Tom, getting in contact with Tord (who left the show eight years before and dropped off the internet since) to do voice acting would be near-impossible, and he hoped that replacing him would draw attention away from him.
    • Starting from "Casting Call", Rachel Kiki has replaced Chloe Dungate as Tamara, and Jennifer Bingham has replaced Alice Ann Stacey as Matilda.
    • With Thomas Ridgewell having stepped down from voicing Tom, the character is now voiced by Ed Templer as of 2021.
  • Outlived Its Creator: After Edd's death, the series continued with Thomas Ridgewell as showrunner, Paul ter Voorde as the lead animator and Tim Hautekiet as Edd's new VA until Legacy closed its doors. As of Eddsworld Beyond, Edd's VA is Edd's brother George Gould while Matt Hargreaves has taken over as the showrunner.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • Marc Lovallo, artist and occasional writer of a fan comic based on the show called Eddsworld Guest Comics and the Eddsworld Fan Movie, alongside Billy Crinion, a friend of his and fellow animator for the fan film, worked on "The End".
    • When Eddsworld was first starting out, Tom was just Edd's friend and wanted to join because he was a fan of the little animations Edd did, and Edd made him sign a contract (keep in mind both were around 12 at the time) before including him.
    • A majority of the new animation team for the Eddsworld revival are many of the animators who worked on the Eddsworld Fan Movie, such as the film's director, Pippin Kelley, co-Director Jon Lopez, and artists Collin Bogert, David Kalev-Roy, Wayne Degen, and Franchesca Pun.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: A retroactive example. Kim and Katya, who are lesbian for each other, are both voiced by Kira Buckland, who came out in 2021 as nonbinary using she/they pronouns.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Ell, Edd's female counterpart, is voiced by Vicky Gould, Edd Gould's real-life sister.
    • As of 2020, Edd himself is voiced by Edd Gould's real-life brother, George. This is even lampshaded in "Casting Call", where Matt says George is the obvious choice because he's Edd's brother.
    • Christopher Bingham (the Evil Director) and Jennifer Bingham (Matilda) are real-life siblings.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: There were various episodes and scenes that were made due to real-life reasons, mostly after Gould's passing.
    • Tord being written off after "Moving Targets" was because of Larsson leaving and requesting for his character not to be used anymore.
    • The voice changer scene in "Space Face", and Edd's permanent voice change because of it, were written in because of Gould's passing and his role as Edd having to be recast.
    • Because of his voice actor, Eddie Bowley, leaving the show after the Legacy era, Jon had to be written off and is completely absent in Beyond as a result.
    • Edd and Tom are absent in "Fan Service 2", unlike the first one, due to the former's real life counterpart's passing and the latter's real life counterpart leaving the show after Legacy.
    • The entirety of "Casting Call" was because most of the voice cast from Classic and Legacy left and their returning characters had to be recasted. Tom being silent in that episode was because his voice actor, TomSka, was one of the people who left the show, and his character didn't have a replacement actor at the time.
  • Reclusive Artist: Tord Larsson became this shortly after his departure from the series in 2008, due to wanting to pursue his own artistic career and not simply be known for his involvement in the Flash series. Persistent and toxic fans who didn't respect or understand his decision to leave Eddsworld, in part due to neither him nor Edd really explaining his leave properly, began to harass Tord, causing him to go off the grid. He was not only totally distant to fans but also the Eddsworld crew as he was only in contact with Gould and not his co-stars Matthew Hargreaves and Thomas Ridgwell. It should also be noted that the latter claimed that the harassment of Tord got so bad he stopped using his actual name on the internet. He later re-emerged following Gould's passing, releasing a video in which he clarified why he left and dispelling any rumors. For whatever reason this video along with the Youtube channel was deleted. To this day, Tord's whereabouts remain unknown, with him leaving behind lost or dead social media accounts.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor:
    • Jamie Spicer-Lewis, who voiced Commander Bai in "Space Face" and Tord in "The End", along with generally helping in the production of Legacy, as well as making a cameo in "Casting Call", was barred from any future involvement in the series in 2021, following revelations that he had sexually abused Rachel Kiki, who is Tamara's current voice actress, when they were a minor. Following these revelations, Spicer-Lewis was condemned by current and former crewmembers, including Hargreaves, Bingham, Bowley, and Ridgewell.
    • Pippin Kelly, otherwise known as PiPtoons, was booted from the show as an animator after confessing to exchanging inappropriate photos with a minor.
  • Role Reprise:
    • Matt is the only character out of the main four (or three) to not have his voice actor replaced at all, being voiced by his real-life self, Matt Hargreaves, throughout the series' entire run. The only official piece of Eddsworld media whatsoever where Matt Hargreaves does not voice his character is in "Eddsworld Biomovies Competition" (a short video made in 2010 for a competition made by the same company that ordered the episode "Climate Change"), where Thomas Ridgewell voices Matt instead.
    • Tord Larsson reprised his character for the first and only time since his departure in WTFuture. It should also be noted that he redubbed over Alex Labbe's original line.
    • Unlike Matilda and Tamara, who had their voice actresses replaced, Ell is still voiced by Vicky Gould for the Beyond era.
  • Rule 34 – Creator Reactions:
    • When asked if he was disturbed by rule 34 of his characters, Edd responded with "It was only a matter of time."
    • In combination of NSFW art of Patryck and Paul the characters and the fanbase treating the characters as their real life counterparts, the actual Patryk snapped at the fanbase and left the show.
    • The premiere episode of Eddsworld Beyond, "Fan Service 2" plays this trope for laughs—Matt's depicted getting an email consisting of an EXTREMELY explicit Eddsworld Slash Fic as a suggestion for an episode, with a very large amount of disturbing Noodle Implements, and after he's done, he hopes it'll be over...then he finds out they attached fanart to it. He doesn't take it well.
  • Same Voice Their Entire Life:
    • In "Fun Dead", Matt and Tom have flashbacks of their childhoods, both of them having the same voices they do now.
    • Even more bizarrely, in "PowerEdd", Edd is voiced by Hautkiet even as a kid, despite him only getting that voice after "Space Face Part 2".
  • Schedule Slip: Happened often in Eddsworld: Legacy due to the Troubled Production.
    • Initially, the plan was to release all the episodes by 2013, but the team only managed to finish three shorts in that year. "The Snogre" itself was meant to be the Christmas Episode for 2012, but was ultimately released in February 2013.
    • "Mirror, Mirror" was supposed to release in February 2015. However, the animator Sandra Rivas had a busy schedule and only had time to animate the episode during weekends. As such, the episode wasn't completed until August.
    • "Saloonatics" was also meant to release in 2015, but the episode was repeatedly postponed due to changing animators multiple times. As such, it ended up being posted in February 2016, only one month before the "The End" two-parter.
    • A non-Legacy example; "Hammer and Fail Part 2" was posted 10 months after Part 1 as Edd was undergoing leukemia treatment, working on the episode during that period.
  • Sequel Gap: "Fan Service 2", which marks the beginning of the Beyond era for the animated series under Matt's direction, was released over four years after the two-parter "The End" that concluded the Legacy Era. This applies even more so for the episode itself, "Fan Service 2" being released nearly nine years after the original "Fan Service" Eddisode.
  • Tribute to Fido:
    • Edd Gould's pet cat Ringo is a character in the show, and also appeared in some of his older Flashes as well. Although her real-life counterpart died in 2007, she's still alive in the show.
    • Tequila, another cat owned by the Goulds, passed on in 2019 and was added to the show as Ringo's Ellsworld counterpart as tribute.
  • Uncancelled: Eddsworld was at least planned to be closed with the episode "The End". However, Edd Gould's mother, Sue Gould, confirmed through her Twitter she had plans to actually be the next show runner, therefore revoking the plans for the series to end. She never executed these plans, however, and Matt Hargreaves ended up taking over as showrunner instead.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Before Edd's death, he and Tom were originally going to collaborate on Tom's show Super Average and set it and Eddsworld in the same universe. The Big Bad of the show would've been the ever-enigmatic Red Leader, whom Tom more-or-less confirms would turn out to have been Tord (though his identity would never have actually been revealed in the story, it would've been fairly obvious that they were the same character). He confirms that Tord's part in "The End", Paul and Patryk's status as soldiers working with him and their plane in "The Snogre" having both a familiar license plate number and a red "R" on it were all intended to be foreshadowing.
    • "The End" was going to play out very differently; originally, Part 1 was going to feature Tord coming back and destroying the house to get his hands on a super weapon before leaving, while Part 2 was going to involve Edd, Tom and Matt looking for a new place to live whilst being pursued by every other villain from the show and, apparently, be a Musical Episode. Due to their deadlines not giving them enough time to record musical numbers, it was changed to a rivalry episode between Tom and Tord, while the Musical Episode was retooled into "Trick or Threat".
    • Laurel was apparently going to be upgraded to a main character after "MovieMakers", replacing Tord. However, after Tom found out Edd was thinking about making an episode where "everyone falls in love with her", he strongly disliked the idea and edited the script so that Laurel is killed off, and due to Edd not liking how flat her character was anyway, he decided to let her stay dead.
    • In "Fun Dead", the ASDF announcer was originally the one who told Edd to stop interrupting him, rather than the television itself.
    • Saloonatics was originally animated by Anthony "Kreid" Price and would have had the same animation style as PowerEdd before the project was handed over to Studio Cacti.
    • Before Edd's death, "Space Face" was titled "Spaceface" and was supposed to be one episode rather than a two-parter. Also, the abduction scene in the second part was originally intended to have Diwi (with the gang visiting Germany just to get him), but he was replaced by a legacy donator.
    • The opening scene for The End Part 1 originally also featured images of "Zanta Claws" and "Zombeh Attack 3", presumably unused because Tord didn't appear prominently in the former and was completely absent in the latter.
    • Tom once talked about a Halloween special him and Edd thought up after realizing the only one Matt had ever interacted with following the "Zombeh Attack" trilogy (where Matt dies and returns as a zombie) was Tom. Edd would confront Tom and reveal that Matt stayed dead after the trilogy, and that Tom's been talking to himself the entire time, with Matt disappearing once Tom comes to terms with it. The idea kept getting pushed back and thrown between the two until they finally decided to make it in 2012; after Edd's passing, it was shelved permanently, since the ending hinged on him (a twist ending where it would fade to the real Edd animating Eddsworld, revealing that the entire series is made up and in his head).
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things:
    • Sometime after leaving the show, Tord Larsson ended up being harassed by the fanbase, which resulted in him dropping off the internet and losing contact with the other show members save for a brief cameo in "WTFuture". This, combined with Tord's Face–Heel Turn in "The End", killed any chances of his character coming back.
    • After stepping down as showrunner, whenever Tom mentioned the show, it was to complain about the fandom's douchebaggery and/or tone-deafness. He would eventually leave the community out of frustration at the toxic side of the fandom, but would later return, deciding to focus on the happy memories he had with the show instead.
    • On a similar note, Tom slowly began to unlist multiple Youtube videos featuring or relating to Edd, with "Oops I Forgot About My 100 Unlisted Videos (Scrap'd Week 4)" explaining that he did so mostly due to the barrage of ignorant and insensitive comments that "fucking sucked." In time most of them were resisted but with the comments disabled.
    • Patryk "Dudul" Dudulewicz (an animator and Eddsword Legacy Kickstarter backer, cameoing with Paul) ended up snapping at the fandom after the Patryk/Paul shippers started mixing up the real person with the fictional character, to the point of it interfering with Dudulewicz's real life. Interestingly, fans seem to have taken his rant to heart, as it's become common for them to use the alterations he suggested for the character's name ("Pat" or "Patryck", as well as occasionally calling Paul "Pau") in fanworks, as well as not using his real last name anymore.
  • Word of God: The crew stated that all Eddsworld episodes takes place during the weekend and that the boys do have jobs, but won't elaborate on that.
  • Word of Saint Paul: According to Thomas Ridgewell, Tom had black eyes because he was possessed by a demon that would take over his body whenever he got angry. Although he had made up this explanation in the very beginning of the series and hinted towards it in two Legacy episodes, "PowerEdd" (Where Tom suddenly transforms into a monster) and "Trick or Threat" ("You can't possess something twice."), he only confirmed it after leaving the crew, meaning that his statement may not be canon.
  • Working Title:
    • "Fun Dead" was originally titled "Deadsworld", but the original title was considered too insensitive.
    • The title "Saloonatics" was chosen by Tom from Edd's list of possible titles for the wild west episode. The unused titles were "Clint Eddswood", "Fists Full of Stupid", "Flaming Saddles", "Failblazers", and "Fool's Gold".
    • Apparently, Edd Gould originally titled "Spaceface" with the two words together. After he passed away, it was named as "Space Face", with both words separated.
  • Written-In Infirmity: After Edd Gould's death, they addressed it by having Edd be shot with a voice-changing gun, which after several hits changes his voice to that of Tim Hautekiet.
  • Write What You Know: The character of Eduardo was inspired by a real-life incident, in which Edd Gould was playing Mario Kart with a random Spanish guy of the same name. When Edd was winning, his opponent left the game, leading him to say the iconic "Eduardoooo..."
  • Writing by the Seat of Your Pants:
    • One blog post implied that Edd would write the episode's script as he was animating it (specifically, MovieMakers).
    • Edd himself confirmed that "This World Of Edd" didn't have any script and was entirely improvised by him on the spot. Since the episode has no lines, this was easier to do.
