Trivia / Conan the Barbarian (2011)
Actor Allusion: Ron Perlman plays Conan's father. He also voiced Conan himself in the 2007 action-adventure video game on PS3 and Xbox 360. He was also reportedly did the voice for an animated adaptation of Red Nails (the last Conan story by Howard) that was never released.
Casting Gag: Back in 2008 there was a project for a new movie to be directed by Red Sonja Robert Rodriguez and starring Rose McGowan. The project fell through... but now McGowan is an evil witch in the new Conan movie.
Irony As He Is Cast: Jason Momoa is a multiracial actor of Native Hawaiian, German, Irish and Native American descent who portrays Conan in this film. The creator of Conan the Barbarian, Robert E. Howard, was somewhat racist, including disapproval towards people of "mingled races".
What Could Have Been:
Among the actors originally considered for the part of Conan include Brendan Fraser, Chris Hemsworth, Jared Paledecki and Kellan Lutz.
Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke were in talks to play Corin, Conan's father. Schawzenegger was offered the role, but he declined.
Marique was supposed to be a male character called Fariq, and he would be considered an unworthy heir to Zym by his right-hand man Ukafa. After Rose MacGowan's casting, the character was rewritten as a female and served as The Dragon to Zym, while Ukafa was relegated to a Mook Lieutenant.
Originally there would have been a child queen called Illira in the story whom Tamara served as bodyguard alongside an Amazon Brigade, and they would end up separated when Zym invaded their monastery, with Tamara joining Conan in hopes of saving her protege. In the end, Tamara was combined with elements from Illira.
