Trivia / BrainScratch Commentaries

Go To

  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Ryan constantly misquoting the chorus of "The U.S.S. Make Shit Up" throughout the Batman: Arkham Asylum commentary.
Ryan: Fire the Photon Particle Beam off the Main Deflector Dish...
  • Creator's Apathy: The group admitted to only doing Pikmin 2 because they did 1 and would want to do 3 one day. Since the only members of the group who had played the game hated it, they talked very little about the game and ended their playthrough once the 10,000 Poko debt was filled, not bothering with the game’s extensive postgame or even getting the Golden Ending. For what it’s worth, Ted apologized in comments of the finale for disappointing fans of the game.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Ryan feels this way with the first 2 commentaries Super Mario Bros. and Mega Man 2, the former was revisited on the channel's 10th anniversary while the latter in 2014 in the Wily Wars playthrough.
      • He considered the Wario World playthrough a "catastrophe" and said that he wanted to show where everything is in the Wario Land 4 playthrough to make up for it.
    • Johnny feels this way about most of the commentaries from 2009 to early 2011.
    • Amanda's "WHAT THE FUCK!?" from part 23 of Shadow the Hedgehog. After listening to herself (and realized that the other commentators had been telling her to stop while she ran out of earshot), she felt extremely embarrassed about her outburst.
  • Follow the Leader:
    • This group is a self-proclaimed rip-off of Hellfire-Commentaries. It's also possible that this very page is a rip-off of a certain other page. BSC has, in turn, also inspired different groups of Let's Players.
    • Mentioned near the end of the Mega Man 4 commentary, Johnny mentioned that both he and a friend of his wanted to make a drunken Let's Play, which has been done by Tipping Forties (Clement has also attempted a drunken Super Meat Boy run). This eventually happened when SGB covered Mario Party 4.
  • In Memoriam: Played for Laughs at the very beginning of the Mega Man X2 commentary; both Johnny and Ryan praise how amazing the Green Biker Dude is and are saddened by his early death, dedicating the first part's title in his honor.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: The aborted Mario Party 1 playthrough now only exists as a single fan-uploaded compilation, after the parts that had been uploaded were removed by Ryan.
  • Milestone Celebration:
    • To celebrate Brain Scratch Commentaries' five-year anniversary in April 2014, the guys made a video reminiscing on the channel's origins, how far they've come and all the guests they've had since then, what their favorite BSC playthroughs are, and where they're heading in the future.
    • The Link: The Faces of Evil playthrough was also made to celebrate the 5th Anniversary, and thus, each part ends with a different version of the BSC logo from over the years.
    • The guys discuss the tenth anniversary consisting of nothing but them sitting on a jar of mayo for 10 minutes.
    • For the actual tenth anniversary in May 2019, the group made another video once again reminiscing about the early years of the channel, how far they've come since then, and what their favorite recent playthroughs are. They then did three revisits of their very first playthroughs, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country and No More Heroes' Hero's Paradise.
  • Missing Episode:
    • The Rebuild of Evangelion movie commentaries, and most movie commentaries from 2009-2011 (aside from the ones uploaded to YouTube by fans) as they were uploaded through the now-defunct Megaupload. Ryan initially put up mirror links after Megaupload's shutdown, but those have since expired.
    • Due to hardware failures, the Mario Party 1 playthrough has been sadly cancelled, deleted, and will never see the light of day. However someone has managed to collect the three original parts and uploaded it as one video.
  • Recursive Adaptation: On a meta-level, any time a troper adds examples from one of their readings of their tvtropes.org pages. It's their commentary over this page's commentary on their commentary. Scratching your brain yet?
  • Schedule Slip:
    • Due to issues with Solaris's PC blue screening, some commentaries were held back until the issue was fixed.
    • All of the main four's personal channels invoke this in some way or another. Lewis and Ryan's accounts are all but dead, having not posted anything in over a year. Ted posts sporadically, sometimes going months without a video and sometimes posting one every day. Johnny, who has a sizable fanbase all his own with his two channels, keeps a consistent rate for the most part. He has gone on brief hiatuses on a few occasions but has always returned.
    • A false copyright claim that was put on one of their Catherine parts has caused the group to go on an upload hiatus which started on January 21, 2016 because it prevents them from uploading videos longer than 15 minutes. Fortunately, they were able to get the copyright strike retracted (on the same day they made a video about YouTube not responding to the counterclaim no less), and have resumed uploading on February 4, 2016.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: Due to someone filing a copyright claim against the group's let's play of Catherine (even though the person in question has zero relations with anything in the game), the channel went on hiatus until they managed to resolve the issue. Not only did the group basically lose out on ad revenue, the strike also screwed them over by limiting their video lengths to 15 minutes. What makes the problem worse is while the person who issued the copyright complaint has retracted it since it was an honest mistake on her part, not only is the person getting errors trying to retract her claim, but YouTube has not answered Brainscratch's queries about what's happening, which has kept everyone in the dark. Fortunately, the copyright claim has been successfully retracted on the same day the group made a video about this issue.
  • Series Hiatus:
    • The Heavy Rain commentary seems to be on one, as there's been no word on it at all since the RAWs went up. Potentially an Orphaned Commentary. Possibly might be taken off hiatus eventually, as the topic was brought up in Sunshine and Ryan gets annoyed at HyperBitHero since Ryan mentioned he was responsible for playing the game.
    • The Persona 5 playthrough started off being posted every Saturday and Sunday... then once a weekend... and now it's on haitus as Lewis gets some personal life stuff done. This actually makes sense, seeing as each part is recorded not much earlier than the commentary.
      • Lewis started an Undertale livestream playthrough around the same time which is also on hiatus likely for the same reasons.
    • A channel wide break started on September 17th 2022 and lasted until January 15th 2023 due to burn out. This has left both the No More Heroes III and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania commentaries on hiatus for now.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The Super Mario 64 playthrough was going to be 100%, but Nayrman deciding to homebrew his Wii stopped this from happening. There was also supposed to be a Devil May Cry 4 playthrough, but because the crew had nothing interesting to say after 3 parts, it was scrapped. A decision later regretted many times over during the Portal 2 Co-Op commentary.
    • Lewis has since recorded both the first Devil May Cry game, and the 2013 reboot, so it is likely they'll get back to 4 eventually.
    • NTom64 was going to be a guest on the Michael Jackson Moonwalker commentary, but they never got back to him.
    • They originally intended to reach 100% in Kirby Return to Dreamland. But due to their constant deaths in stage 7-3, they decide to skip it.
    • Ted had originally recorded one of the Ace Attorney games; but scrapped the idea realizing that as a text-heavy game it wouldn't make for a particularly interesting commentary.
    • Another playthrough that was scrapped after Ted recorded it was Trauma Team, which the whole group decided against due to it being a monolithic 60 parts. Ted settled for the much shorter Trauma Center: Second Opinion instead.
    • Lewis had started uploading Persona 3 FES raws, however they have since been removed.
    • Clement was meant to be a guest in the revisited Sonic Adventure 2 commentary, even getting a credit in the title card alongside Gareth. Unfortunately, due to scheduling issues, he couldn't make it.
    • Gareth was originally going to tag along for the TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan commentary, but because he had a friend over his house that weekend, he didn't have time.
    • Originally, both Ryan and Johnny were going to play Sonic 4: Episode 2 together via online Co-Op. However, Johnny's recording software messed up, and the footage had to be scrapped.
    • Amanda was originally set to record Pokémon Platinum. Ryan was the one who did it when they eventually got around to it.
    • As revealed during the Crash 4 commentary, had it not been for Lewis having computer issues, his playthrough of Leaf Green would've kept going. However, because of technical problems with the emulator and recording software, Johnny had to step in.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: The reason why there hasn't been (And probably won't be) another TV tropes reading is because of the fact that haters had been shitting on the page on some of the commentators. There have been a few people going through the page trying to scrub out all the negativity, or at least make it sounds less hate written, but as of 2015 and no sign of an update on the matter, it seems like the damage has been done.
