Episode 303: They Stole Max's Brain
  • The entire Noir Sam sequence. Sam discovered the crime and almost immediately loses his shit. He begins running around the city, interrogating anyone he believes is connected to the crime is the most brutal manner possible, threatens Carol with his gun when he gets impatient with the amount of time it takes to process a vital piece of information, and loses his hat and suit and develops five o'clock shadow. But worst of all, his reaction to finding Max as a brainless husk. Even the C.O.P.S. acknowledge that Sam's gone too far when he threatens them:
Bob: Audiences across the country say: "You're a monster, Sam!"
    Curt: WHAT HAVE YOU BECOME?

Episode 305: The City that Dares Not Sleep

  • When Papierwaite tells Sam that Max's tumor became infected with dark matter and they won't be able to operate normally, instead of stepping back from the problem and trying to think of a solution like he normally would, he weakly, almost childishly, asks if Papierwaite can "make it better." This being Sam & Max, he obviously immediately follows with another hilarious quip; but he sounds so defeated when he says this, it cranks Sam's woobie factor up to eleven.
  • Sal's death. After half a season of being a lovable, casual, and just overall pleasant guy, he ends up sacrificing himself to try and save the city.
  • After spending nearly the whole episode trying to save his best friend, Sam is only able to watch in horror as Max's head actually does catch on fire from using his powers too much. Knowing that he's risking everyone else's lives, all Max can do is sadly give Sam a wave goodbye before teleporting into space and exploding, which Sam sees as a Twinkle in the Sky.
    Sam: (quietly) Max...?
  • Acting President Superball's stoicism actually breaks when the attempt to resurrect Max through cloning fails (even if his voice remains as monotone as ever), attempting to offer his condolences before admitting that he can't take it anymore and running off crying. As much Max messed with him as the President, Superball really did come to like the lagomorphic sociopath.
  • The end. As Abe Lincoln, Flint Paper, Mr. Featherly, and Grandpa Stinky (now in the body of one of Skun-ka'pe's soldiers) struggle to think of anything to say to Sam after Max's death, Sam just... leaves. His slow, sad walk through the credits is just depressing. Especially the part where he walks past a mugging without paying it any attention. Twice.
    • Even worse, one of the crimes seen is a Call-Back to the very first comic, where Max poked out the eyes of an attempted stalker-turned-kidnapper without missing a beat.
    • The "crimefighting" ending, when Sam and Max start to excitedly discuss their next case, reunited again after briefly losing each other.
