Sir Lionel was indeed Arthur's trusted knight and a dear friend to him. May his soul rest in peace.
  • "The Prayer," while it's also Heartwarming Juliana watches as Kayley rides off into danger, being chased by Ruber's men, unable to do anything to help her, turns to God, and ask that he watch over and lead her daughter safely to her destiny.
Juliana: I pray you'll be my eyes, and watch her where she goes...
  • Kayley's father's death at the beginning wasn't terribly sad (given that we barely got to know him), but his family finding out about it was pretty depressing.
    Young Kayley: No...
    • To elaborate further on this moment, Kayley (who was 10) is playing in the snow and Juliana sweeping the front of their home when the knights arrive through the mist. Kayley excitedly calls out for her father and runs towards the riding knights. She looks around for her father but nobody will look her in the eye and have somber expressions. Kayley keeps looking...then sees an ox cart carrying a body covered with a battered shield.
    • What really drives this home? Lionel was killed on the 10 Year Anniversary that King Arthur pulled Excalibur from the stone, formed the Knights of the Round Table, and united the lands. Not to mention his daughter's birthday. This was supposed to be a happy day! But no, on that day, Arthur lost two knights, one to Betrayal, and the other at the cost of his life.
    • It's later revealed that after he lost his sight as a boy, Garrett looked to Lionel as a surrogate father who had faith he would become a knight someday. So we don't lose just any character we hardly knew, both Garrett and Kayley lost a good father.
    • As the funeral ends, Kayley runs away and hugs her pony, crying. As the song My Father's Wings begins, Kayley looks at her reflection in a nearby pool. We see her age in the reflection from a young girl to a preteen to finally a young woman. The lyrics really hammer in just how much her father's loss is still affecting her years later.
Adult Kayley: If you are with me now, I'd find myself in you.
If you were with me now, you're the only one who knew all the things we planned to do.
I want to live my life the way you said I would.
      With courage as my light
      Fighting for what's right
Like you made me believe I could.
  • Garrett revealing to Kayley that he knew her father at the time when he lost his sight in an accident while he was a stable boy. That night, Garrett was rescuing the horses from the stable fire until one of them accidentally kicked him in the head, resulting in his blindness. He can only describe of what he saw from his vision after being kicked in the head before he became fully blind.
Garrett: All I can see were shapes... then shadows... Finally, my world went black.
    • His backstory concludes with him saying "Any hope I had of becoming a knight died with him." meaning that he started to give up on his dream of becoming a knight after hearing Sir Lionel, the only one who stood by him, died, and went to live in the Forbidden Forest in self-imposed exile.
  • Garrett declining to return to Camelot with Kayley after they retrieve Excalibur, saying he doesn't belong there. Of course, the real reason he elects not to go is because he thinks Kayley will see him as inferior when compared with the Knights of the Round Table. The moment is made complete with a bitter reprise of his song (come on, admit, it's hard not to feel bad for him here). You can even see him tear up when he says this:
"She'd only see me through their eyes. Not a knight, not a man, not anything..."
    • No less heartbreaking are Kayley's words when Garrett leaves after saying "I don't belong in that world".
Kayley: But you belong in mine...
  • After Kayley learns that Excalibur has been stolen, she pleads with Juliana for her permission to go find the sword. Juliana doesn't want to lose her daughter as she lost her husband so she refuses. Kayley (who wants adventure and excitement after a lifetime being stuck on the estate) and Juliana get into an argument that ends with Kayley leaving in tears. Juliana, who realizes that she hurt Kayley's feelings, just looks at a nearby wall tapestry of her, Kayley and Lionel and asks "What would you do?" in a heartbroken voice.
