  • The Downer Beginning for Utsutsu and Yume. Their father was an extremely abusive man, beating their mother and then his children after he was fired. After a divorce, their mother began dating another man, and the father left the two kids alone.
    • Or that's what Utsutsu thinks. The truth is that Yume is an amnesiac monster incarnated as a human and her birth gave problems to the Hasegawa household, since Shiro believed her to be Heroic Bastard and that Sachiko cheated on him. While Sachiko went into despair upon witnessing Yume's antics as a monster. And while Shiro is a jerk, the scar in Utsutsu's eye is not his fault. Because it was YUME'S DOING. In summary, all the problems in Utsutsu's life are Yume's fault.
  • Everything about Yuu. His mate is taken away from him, reincarnates as a human and forgets about him. Ah, and said mate is Yume who now loves Utsutsu.
  • Utsutsu's beloved mother, Sachiko, didn't run away with a younger man. Instead, she is now a permanent resident of Bizen's hospital.
  • Shiro's past. An orphan adopted by Maria's grandfather. For years he was locked in his house, physically abused, experimented on and treated as a plaything. Also, he became convinced that the abuse was Genjurou's "love" towards him, so he wants to show that love to Utsutsu. Hence why he is so unhinged and believes that hurting those you love is the greatest form of affection.
  • Yuu is eaten alive by Utsutsu in one of his rampages, after the latter starts becoming a monster. And after they're confronted with that fact, not even Utsutsu or Yume care about it. Luckily, because he is a Pupa monster, he survives.
  • Shiro giving Utsutsu a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown, as he proclaims that pain is love and he loves his son so much. Then, we see a flashback of Shiro kicking a toddler Utsutsu in the face....which immediately turns into Genjurou whipping a young Shiro.
  • In a rather sad and twisted way, Utsutsu becoming a Pupa monster in front of his father showed that even Shiro is capable of love, even if it's distorted by the childhood abuse he's suffered through.
  • The Reveal that Utsutsu was Dead All Along after he attempted to save Yume from an incoming truck as a toddler, but ends up getting himself killed instead, which causes Yume to "revive" him as a monster. The fact that Yume didn't need to be protected (because as a monster, she has Healing Factor) at that point any more makes it a borderline Senseless Sacrifice, too.
    • Oh, it's more than that. After the truck runs into the kids, Yume regenerates immediately due to her Healing Factor, but since Utsutsu is a human, he is about to die (with broken teeth and his intestines pouring out) and tearfully begs Yume not to abandon him like her mother did. Yume has a change of heart and decides to revive Utsutsu...by turning him into a monster like her.
  • The Bittersweet Ending. Utsutsu and Yume devouring each other as they disintegrate into butterflies.
    • Everone's reactions after Utsutsu and Yume disintegrate? Yuu accepting calmly that his mate now loves someone else. Shiro is broken and devastated, since he is unable to save his son. Sachiko is watching the red butterflies with a smile in her face....unaware that those butterflies are her son. And then the butterflies reach the school. Utsutsu's best friend, Yuuhei sees them and realizes that Utsutsu is not coming back.
  • The "Maria's Island" special. It reveals that Maria/Ai was feared by her mother for being a Creepy Child with a Lack of Empathy. And she got scarred in the face after she deduced that her brother Makoto did things with dolls. Feeling guilt for scarring her face, Makoto develops incestuous feelings towards her, but Ai becomes too fixated on the Pupa monsters to notice his feelings. In order to continue being alongside her, he stays as his assistant... her faithful assistant Hotoki.
    • We also see a glimpse of young Shiro just as he's going to be adopted by Genjurou. Genjurou expresses interest in making him his new inspiration for his paintings and takes him away. Shiro looks back at Makoto, as if asking for help. But Makoto just looks away, lamenting that Genjurou will break the boy in the future. The next time we see Shiro, the damage has already been done.
