* Illari was poised to be the greatest of a long line of Peruvian defenders known as the Inti Warriors, but due to a horrible accident from her initiation ritual -- where [[PowerIncontinence her newly-developed solar powers ended up accidentally vaporizing everything around her]], including her brethren -- she ended up becoming the LastOfHerKind. That alone is tragic enough, but where Illari differs from other heroes with {{Dark and Troubled Past}}s is how she composes herself: while others [[TheSnarkKnight usually are able to manage some air of upbeat levity]] with [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness only periodic moments of sorrow]], Illari's disposition is chronically somber, serious-minded, often sounding outright depressed, very much coming from someone who's still haunted by her past. Her in-game dialogue is phrased in ways that she's protecting her allies and taking down baddies not just because it's the right thing to do, but because [[KnightInSourArmor she's seen enough death in her time and won't be losing anyone else on her watch]].

* Ashe, the leader of the Deadlock Gang, has a sympathetic backstory as well. Through her origin story, we see how she grew up as a LonelyRichKid, not helped by ParentalNeglect. Even though they tried to get her the best of education, she wasn't putting up with their treatment of her. She lashed out at them, her parents, and the world around her. The only friend she seemed to have growing up was her Omnic butler, B.O.B. Together with [=McCree=], she formed the Deadlock Gang, to finally have a family of her own in a different way, but hints still slip by every now and then that she genuinely wishes she had their approval.

* "Retribution" reveals what drove [=McCree=] and Reyes apart. After Reyes disobeys the mission objective to extract Talon executive Antonio alive, [=McCree=] is shocked and angrily reprimands Reyes' decision. Throughout the rest of the mission, at least half of [=McCree's=] usual quips towards Reyes are filled with disdain and anger.

** The ending. Sojourn doesn't mince words when she tells Winston that as much as he may want to get everyone back together, [[NothingIsTheSameAnymore the glory days can never return]]. Everyone who didn't answer his recall has likely already moved on. Even her suggestion of finding Jack and getting him to lead is immediately shot down by Cassidy, who tells her what he learned from Ana - Jack Morrison died along with the original Overwatch. There is only Soldier: 76 now, and he is not interested in returning to any sort of new iteration of Overwatch - only chasing ghosts and getting revenge on Gabriel Reyes for betraying him as well as finding out the truth behind his organization's downfall. Sojourn still agrees to help them in some capacity, but she refuses to join the team, still despondent over just how much Overwatch failed when the masses placed their trust in them.

* TheStinger shows Zenyatta reflecting on the events that led up to this point. While meditating, he reminisces about the day his brother Ramattra left the Shambali. You can hear how distraught Ramattra is as he laments how Omnics don't really have a place to call their own in this world, expressing to Mondatta his disappointment in humanity for not being able to come to terms with their existence and newfound sentience due to Anubis forcing them into attempted genocide. All Mondatta can do is wish him luck in his endeavors and hope that he will see that peaceful coexistence is possible. The scene then shifts to Mondatta assassination, tragically proving Ramattra right in that some humans really ''can't'' be trusted to accept them as equals. Particularly Talon, since Doomfist only sees Ramattra and the remnants of Null Sector as a means to an end, mere pawns in his grand scheme to thrust the world into another war in order to further human evolution.

* The Toronto mission sees Winston's hastily-formed new iteration of Overwatch briefly ally with Sojourn in order to protect an evac site. Along the way, they come across some captured Omnic civilians with devices strapped to their heads. These devices render the Omnics completely unresponsive and, as revealed in the Sweden mission, have effectively ''killed'' them, effectively stealing their souls and leaving only their shells behind as empty husks.

* The ending to the Sweden mission. Continuing from Sojourn's refusal to join, Torbjorn also chooses to stay behind, having already accepted that he can't go back to the way things were. Protecting his family and his factory is what he considers his mission now, but he's proud that Brigitte can fend for herself and fight in his stead, succeeding his original role.

** During her chat with Tremblay, Sojourn recounts how she ended up testifying against Overwatch, which led to the enactment of the Petras Act and the disbandment of Overwatch. Sojourn claims it was the hardest decision she's ever made in her life, and the audience can tell it hurt her to have to speak against people she once called comrades because they lost their way.
