• A preface: In the opening to the Hero's chapter in Dragon Quest IV, the village in which the Hero was raised peacefully is destroyed by monsters looking to kill them before they can become a threat. Said Hero's childhood friend/possibly more (Cynthia in the JP version, Celia or Eliza in the English release) uses a spell to take on the hero's form, warns him not to leave their hiding place and sacrifices herself to fool the monsters. All the Hero can hear is the screams of their loved ones as they're killed, until the monsters announce that they've killed the Hero and leave.
