  • The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You: Karane uses this pretty much every other sentence, owing to her stereotypical Tsundere personality.
  • Aggretsuko features Kabae returning from "vacation" after missing a crunch period at work, telling Retsuko that "I wanna tell you all about my vacation which was a vacation and definitely not a cover for espionage!"
  • In Ah! My Goddess, Urd confronts Peorth after Peorth's love potion backfires. Peorth says, "I don't know anything about going to your room, taking your medicine, and then trying to monopolize Keiichi's heart." Urd hasn't even asked her the question yet. Of course, Peorth was in a pinch because as a first-class goddess, she's not allowed to lie.
  • Subverted in AIR. In one scene, Hijiri finds Yukito and Kano embracing each other, and wants answers. Yukito tells her, "I know I'm embracing her like this, but it's not what you think! I didn't use alcohol to seduce an innocent little girl and take her to a secluded place to-", even though he really wasn't going to do anything to her (and in fact had been searching for her at Hijiri's request).
  • In the tenth episode of Asteroid in Love, when Moe asks Mira why she's so eager to recruit new members, she says it's to avoid the club from being disbanded due to a lack of members. But when Ao mentions increased membership means increased funding, Mira denies she's hoping to buy an equatorial mount for club telescope with the new members...
  • Azumanga Daioh has a few:
    • Yukari makes sure the class knows that the reason they all stayed in her class for the second year (except for Kagura, whom she brought over to win the sports festival) was NOT because she didn't want to learn any new names. (Oh, and please don't change your seating arrangement, either.)
    • Tomo, cosplaying as a giraffe, stands up during class to say, "I'm not bothering anyone." (link)
    • Osaka asks Kaorin if she's gay, to which Kaorin replies, "The correct term is lesbian!" She then tries, using the power of logic, to explain to Osaka why she's not a lesbian, it's simply a teenage thing and she has a Single-Target Sexuality for the resident Huge Schoolgirl who happens to not be a guy. (link)
    • "There aren't any dead cats or nothing." says Osaka, trying to convince Nyamo to come to their café during the second culture fest... It's true and her denial (somewhat) makes sense in context, but still...
  • Bakemonogatari: In Nisemonogatari, when Shinobu materializes in Araragi's bath and is seen by his sister:
Tsukihi: Where's that girl? [holding a knife]
Araragi: There was no girl with golden hair, pale white skin, a flat chest and a haughty, old-style voice, but appearing to be eight years old.
  • Early on in Bleach, Ishida defends Rukia from Renji and Byakuya. When asked by Rukia what he's doing wandering around at night, he answers that he had to go shop at a 24-hour sewing store. "It's not like I took off because I was concerned when I sensed Shinigami energy and brought this bag from home just for an excuse to be outside." Rukia even mentally points out how blatant this lie was.
  • Bubblegum Crisis 2040 has Mackie accidentally stumbling upon the Knight Sabers' secret lair and entering the girl's locker room. He later tries to defuse the situation by stating that he did NOT see Nene's pink underwear.
  • In the first episode of Case Closed, Mitsuhiko tells Shinichi that he, Genta, and Ayumi, who had sneaked into the roller coaster, "didn't come in without paying money."
  • Cells at Work!: After White Blood Cell tries telling Killer T Cell about how it would be nice if all cells could get along and respect each other, Killer T Cell shouts at him that it's impossible for immune cells to be friendly with body or blood cells, no matter how much they might want to shoot the breeze sometime or get invited to a neighborhood game of cards. White Blood Cell notes that that is an oddly specific scenario.
  • The Dangers in My Heart: Ichikawa arrives in Shibuya to borrow manga from Yamada 30 minutes earlier than planned. Then he tells himself it was just to make sure that it was the right spot they were supposed to meet, and not because he got excited about meeting her.
  • D.Gray-Man: Bak definitely, absolutely, certainly did not take those pictures while stalking Lenalee.
  • Doraemon features one from Doraemon to Suneo/Sneech in the episode "Time Cloth" ("Time Kerchief"). The English dub features this exchange:
Sneech: [after handing Doraemon a box of junk] So whatcha want it for, huh?
Doraemon: Can't say. It's a secret. So I'm not gonna tell you that we're using one of my gadgets to make all this old stuff new again, nope, won't get it out of me.
Sneech: [snickering] Sure, the secret is so safe with you!
  • In Dragon Ball Z, at the end of the Cell saga, Android 18 overhears Krillin making a wish to Shenron to remove the bombs in her and 17's bodies. When he tells the others that his reasons were because he thought the two made a cute couple, 18 angrily comes out to tell him they're twins. She then goes on a rant saying "Don't think I'll accept you so easily, or that I'm grateful to you for the bomb!" Given that by the next arc the two are married and with a daughter, it's pretty much clear she was just being a Tsundere and trying to drop the hint on him, which he evidently took.
  • Simon Brezhnev from Durarara!! will tell you that there is definitely no human meat in their sushi, it's all pure non-human stuff. One wonders why he has to go advertise like that, and the fact that he at some point threatens some Yellow Scarves that he'll make them into sushi doesn't help his case any.
    • He has also been quoted as saying that Russia Sushi "will not kill you."
  • Dee and Ryo get taken off a case in one episode of FAKE, leading to this line from Drake:
Drake: Chief! I've managed to apprehend Ben Lloyd, sir! I nabbed him all by myself and definitely not with anyone else's help!

  • In Full Metal Panic!, Sôsuke has to pretend to be Mizuki's boyfriend (so she can save face in front of her friends). Unfortunately, this is no easy task, considering that Sōsuke has a hard time pretending to be a normal boy due to his being socially inept and only having knowledge about military life. After receiving "coaching" from Mizuki, he tries his best to convince her friends during the outing. His response when they tell him that he looks like he's been through lots of battles and is not at all like Mizuki described him? "You perceive wrongly. I wear common clothing that has no use in battle whatsoever. I feel unimaginable happiness wasting time talking with women. I'm that type of human." Sure. They are not convinced.
  • In episode ten of Girls Beyond the Wasteland, almost every single club member claims they're not surfing the net to read reviews on the demo game for their various specialties, such as Uguisu claiming she doesn't want to know what people thought of her artwork in the game.
  • In Episode 3 of Gourmet Girl Graffiti, Kirin asks Shiina to come over to Ryou's apartment and help cook some food to cheer her up after a failing sketch assignment. However, when Ryou asks Shiina why she's coming over, Kirin tries to silence her, and says instead that Shiina is coming over to eat some food, lest some aliens kidnap her. Ryou finds the explanation dubious and wonders what Kirin is really up to, but lets it slide, and even jokes about it later.
  • Gundam
    • In Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Mashmyre Cello is begging the rose given the him by Haman to give "this poor lamb" guidance when his subordinate Gottn enters the room.
Mashmyre: How much did you hear?!
Gottn: Nothing, sir! I certainly didn't hear anything about a lamb and a rose!
      Mashmyre: So you heard everything!
    • In Gundam Build Fighters, Tatsuya Yuuki pulls this, when confronted over his identity as champion gunpla fighter Meijin Kawaguchi III, he claims that he is not the former student council president of Seiho Academy, or the former Captain of their model-building club. His impeccable knowledge of the person he supposedly isn't does not go unnoticed by Sei and Reiji. Especially given his disguise was just a pair of shades, which he proceeded to take off during his denial. It was basically his way of saying "Yes, it's me, but I'm on the clock and In Character", especially since later in the story he doesn't even deny it and hangs out with Sei and Reiji while "off the clock".
  • When Yuno visits Nori's apartment in Hidamari Sketch, she noticed a particular toy Nori owns...
Yuno: Ah, a Furbo! Does it still talk?
Nori: It— it's not like I keep it because I think it's cute or anything!
  • Part of the Onikakushi arc of Higurashi: When They Cry, while Rena and Mion seem suspicious to Keiichi, he in turn makes them suspicious of him by claiming that he wasn't talking to the police about them when they never asked if that was the case in the first place. In fact, a lot of the stuff in that arc was a suspiciously specific denial, thanks to delusions.
  • Humanity Has Declined had the main character (who'd just had her hair cut as part of a bet) finding a bottle of hair tonic with a suspiciously specific sticker.
  • Hunter × Hunter: The Phantom Troupe confronting Hisoka when they have their fortunes told has elements of this. Hisoka essentially tells them that he can't tell them anything, not even why he can't tell them anything. He only says that he'll defend his life is he feels threatened. This makes him look obviously guilty, but it's all a Batman Gambit by Hisoka to have Chrollo defend him by interpreting Hisoka's words differently, assuming instead that Hisoka had information forcibly extracted, and that if Hisoka explained this himself he would die. In truth, Hisoka altered his fortune so that Chrollo would interpret it this way, preventing the troupe from catching on to his betrayal.
  • Hyakunichikan!!: At the pet store, Shuuto's kohai Mika Mimori hides her face and says she's "definitely not a first-year Class B student from Amanatsu High!!" He doesn't remember who she is even when she uncovers her face and mentions her name.
  • I Don’t Like You at All, Big Brother!!. In fact, the person who said that totally has the hots towards her big brother.
    • A minor example is their father's "lack of interest" one of the SM porn Nao found in Shuusuke's Porn Stash.
  • Subverted in It's Tough Being Neeko. When Imoko invites her older sister Neeko to the beach, her hastily adding, "Ah! And I'm not inviting you cause Mom said to take you with me, okay?" would come off as a textbook example of the trope. In context, however, their mother had recently tricked Iroha into working a part-time shift at an electronics store, so Imoko was being honest about her invitation, wanting to reassure her sister that there was nothing more to it.
  • Junjou Romantica:
    • Miyagi from is fond of this.

Miyagi Ah, don't forget, this is totally, completely hypothetical.
Hiroki: Got it, got it. So what is it?

  • In Medaka Box, the culprit in the second episode:
Medaka: Isahaya the third-year, are you the culprit?
Isahaya: No! I don't know anything about that... I didn't use scissors on Ariake-san's spikes! And never sent a letter telling her to quit track!
  • My-Otome has a scene early on, after Arika and Mashiro have their Green Rocks exploded in an organ accident and Arika has to substitute her Orphan's Plot Trinket. Since this action is very much against the rules, Arika has to feign injuries through most of her classes that require her to have a non-exploded Green Rock. Eventually Shizuru asks her why she's been acting strangely, and Arika responds, "Nothing! I was nowhere near that organ when it went off!" Shizuru pretends she didn't notice and walks off, apparently satisfied. (All she and Natsuki really wanted to know about was the organ, which turns out to be an Ancient Weapon with which they are painfully familiar.)

My hand slipped" while clearly smirking. Later on while pretending to work for Buggy, Zoro deliberately attacks Mohji and Richie to protect Vivi. Right afterwards he says "Sorry, my hand slipped", much to Cabaji's annoyance.
    • During their climactic fight in the Dressrosa arc, Law reveals to Doflamingo that he is a D, the "natural enemy" of the World Nobles (which, earlier in the arc, Doflamingo had revealed himself to be a former of). Doflamingo claims that he doesn't believe in the "superstitions" surrounding the name in his homeland, only for his actions to betray his true state of mind as his attacks on Law grow increasingly reckless as he visibly becomes more enraged.
  • Oreimo:
    • In the first light novel, Kyousuke thinks the following about Manami, a childhood friend he's always described as completely plain and unremarkable:
Kyousuke: I wanted to go to the same university as her. It's not that I'm in love with her or anything, it's that I want this comfortable "have-been-together-forever relationship" to continue for as long as possible. And if I’m right beside Miss Average -– Manami, I might be able to have the normal life that I yearn for. That was what I thought.
    • In the anime adaptation, his friend Akagi calls him out over his suspiciously specific denials.
Akagi: So basically she's nothing more than a childhood friend to you, you're not going out with her, you have no feelings for her, but you won't allow other guys to make a move on her?
  • In Outbreak Company, the protagonist tries to prove that a girl he found is not a spy from the Kingdom of Bahailam by questioning her. She explains that:
I came here from the east... when I say "the east," I don't mean the Kingdom of Bahailam! I didn't even know that the Kingdom of Bahailam lay to the east! [...] I was never told to do anything like find places that might be secret military installations, and draw them from various angles before sending them home or anything like that! I wasn't going to be paid for every picture or anything...

Miku: I-It's not like I was hoping to run into you that I decided to go to a farther away store based on my memory of the time we came to pick you up. I was just walking and happened to find myself here.

Ranma: Who gives a damn about my rotten pop?
Akane: I didn't know you were so heartless. It's lucky I didn't fall in love with you!
Ranma: Me, too! Lucky I didn't fall in love with such an uncute chick!
  • Ruby in Rave Master manages to nearly get Haru killed by insistently telling his captors that there isn't one more member of their group who has yet to arrive and, when this lie is seen through, adds that the person who isn't coming definitely isn't the Rave Master. Ruby is completely incapable of lying, and doesn't have the sense to not talk when it would get him and others into trouble.
  • One instance in Sailor Moon, when Usagi and the others show up as Rei is fending off a monster on her own.
Rei: What were you doing!? You're late!!
    Ami: I'm sorry! It's because I wasn't paying attention.
