I Blame Communism: Some of these pages, notably those on real life, have fallen victim to the sort of inflation usually associated with Zimbabwe and Weimar Germany. Things which are now crowning moments include silly This Troper anecdotes (I plead guilty of telling those on several pages, but I acknowledge that they are seldom even slightly awesome, which is why I don't put them here), John Lennon making a classist joke which isn't actually very funny, and Stalin killing hundreds and hundreds of people over the space of 20 years (which I deleted). To paraphrase Voltaire, many are neither Crowning, mor Moments, nor Awesome.
I'm not saying Stalin should be banned from the list. It's true that some Nazis did awesome things just as fictional villains do, and more mundanely that there are plenty of things on this list that I find stupid or offensive yet awesome in their chutzpah. It's just that the "Awesome" part no longer means anything.
I think the herd should be culled. Awesome has standards, and while judging them objectively is hard, there are plenty of frivolous tales that can simply be struck from the lists, and the others can at least be much better categorised within each page (I think there may even be duplication in here, and the sheer volume of WW 2 stuff is staggering). Thoughts?
@bhl88: Could this also be considered a Crowning Moment of Awesome: Nagi Springfield & Arika's escape from the Cerebus Canyon, a place where magic is rendered unusable and where it is nearly impossible to escape (the executioner also claimed a high daylight walker would find it difficult to come out alive, even the Thousand Master himself). Crowning Moment of Awesome can also go to Rakan (The executioner said that there are 2 fleets and 3000 elite troops in addition to the executioner's troops), at which he said, "... You think that's going to be enough?!" before pummeling the entire forces to oblivion. —- Split Crowning Moment of Awesome by series launched as Crowning Moment Of Awesome: From YKTTW Patsy: Can we decide on one for any given character? Mal doesn't need three. Peteman: I think we should divide up the "Crowning Moment of Awesome" into categories, like we have Nightmare Fuel, and I Am Not Making This Up, because it's getting a bit unwieldy. Charred Knight: It should be one per person, otherwise we end up with people arguing over who's cooler between Toph or Zuko, and we don't want or need that. It should be the first awesome thing they did or the most awesome thing. If a series is tounge in cheek like Gao Gai Gar, Gurren Lagann, G Gundam, and Super Robot Wars you should simply mention that these series are full of badasses who run on pure awesomeness, could kill Mal by bitchslapping him. Cassius335 Removed:
Scifantasy: Removed the duplicate, and un-spoiler-protected (I don't care personally, but since it's in there twice, remove the spoilery one, eh?) Granny Weatherwax entry:
Mark Z: Removed Duke Nukem, as nobody can really embody Crowning Moment of Awesome. It's a scene trope, not a character trope. Charred Knight: I removed some from Gurren Lagann and Super Robot Wars since both of them are simply to full of these to list even half of them. I just pointed out that if we where to list them all both would simply be a summary of every episode/level. The reason I did this was because if let out of hand, those two could basically become a dick measuring contest. Servbot: Too late. Let the dick-measuring begin. Charred Knight: And that is what I was worried about. I also deleted several Order of the Stick mentions as that had become a DMC especially the Elf one. To be clear this is NOT List Your Favorite Scene this where a character does something so awesome that you fall in love with the character. I kept it so that the first one mentioned would be the only one. I would rather not end up with 50 pages of Crowning Moment Of Awesome for Super Robot Wars, Avatar, and Order of the Stick. Tanto: Well, arguably, that's what you were asking for when this page got started. Subjective Trope + There Is No Such Thing As Notability = No recourse for deleting stuff when a page gets out of hand. But that's just me. Obviously, a lot of people like the subjective stuff and don't care how long or subjective it gets... Sean Tucker: I say we give TTGL, SRW, Avatar, and Oot S their own Crowning Moment Of Awesome pages. Also, I put forth the notion that we rename this trope to "Epic Win", seeing as how we already have "Epic Fail" which happens to be this trope's polar opposite. Copied from Crowning Moments Of Awesome For Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Discussion (Cassius335) Don Quigleone: This page is but a shadow of the awesome it should be, it's a start though, improvements would be welcome (the symptoms should be more tropey, however I'm not all that creative a writer so...) Charred Knight: Stop with the dick measuring! Its gotten annoying as hell! This is easily the worst page in TV Tropes it fulfills no purpose other than as a Dick measuring contest between Gurren Lagann fans and the rest of the board. Don Quigleone: It's Just For Fun, if it offends I'm sorry Servbot: You're absolutely right! But you know, it's terribly unfair for only one Anime series to get its own Crowning Moment Of Awesome page. What about Avatar The Last Airbender? Or Super Robot Wars? Or Batman? Or Deadpool? Or Order Of The Stick? Or The Adventures Of Doctor Mc Ninja? Or Girl Genius? Or Justice League? Or Doctor Who? Or Fire Fly? Or Battlestar Galactica? Or Naruto? Or Bleach? Or Discworld? Equality I say. Actually, I take back Discworld. The Crowning Moments Of Awesome there means that there should be individual pages for Sam Vimes, Lord Vetinari, Granny Weatherwax, Susan Sto Helit, Death, Cohen the Barbarian, and the other characters. Don Quigleone: Nothing wrong with that at all in my view, the whole idea of Crowning Moment Of Awesome is really fan discussion and listing off our favourite examples, or Fan Wank, or as Charred Knight so beautifully states Dick Measuring (I move to make Dick Measuring a sub trope of Fan Wank) Citizen: This page needs to be deleted. Charred Knight: I have made my stance perfectly clear, its a joke that has gone way to far. Adam850: Can't you just put a mention on the Gurren Lagann page of these elements? I don't see why this page is necessary. Charred Knight: They did put mention of these things, the problem is that a rhetorical joke went to far and this page was made. It was a page made without thinking about how others would feel, the only thought that went into was how awesome Gurren Lagann was and how funny the joke would be to have an actual page. It serves no real purpose other than putting an episode guide of Gurren Lagann up. Its basically Fancrufting taken to the extreme where instead of just entering a series name into as many pages as possible, you simply make a page for the sole purpose of a single series. It's troll bait, and if I knew how to delete a page, I would. If this pisses off any Gurren Lagann fans, I am sorry, but this page needs to be deleted because its stupid. Yes, its a good show but it doesn't need to have a page dedicated to how awesome it is if we did it for one we would have to do it for other series. This is the result of someone who clearly has not seen a lot of anime, if they had they would have seen that Gurren Lagann is the spiritual succesor of G Gundam and Gao Gai Gar. Don Quigleone: I am aware of both (haven't seen either yet) and have watched many anime (bout 50). Also flaming about this achieves nothing. This page was mostly a Just For Fun joke created on a whim(I thought it would draw a chuckle, not flame wars), maybe a good compromise would be to split Crowning Moments Of Awesome into sub medium pages (like Reality Is Unrealistic) as people are going to keep wanting to put there favorite bits into it (it's asking for it with it's title, and it's getting very long). Uknown Troper: While I do agree to the fact that Crowning Moment Of Awesome is getting too big — too big, I'd say — this is being way, way too specific. Delete it or make it a redirect for a future anime subexample page, in the same vein as Nightmare Fuel and I Am Not Making This Up. Servbot: So... temporary redirect to Crowning Moment Of Awesome page until this gets deleted? Nerdorama: I fully support the deletion of this page, as it's pointless Fan Wank, but contributed to it anyway. Because that's the Dai-Gurren Dan way! Okay, I'll shut up now. //I can't read. Susan Davis: This page is getting long and unwieldy. Should we consider splitting it? Fast Eddie: The Crowning Moment Of Awesome page is up to just short of 200K characters. Does seem like a time for a by-media split. (Citizen: This line was removed during an earlier edit) Kizor: If there is a legitimate argument of this page being Fan Wank or Dick Measuring territory, with a tendency to grow to unwieldy lengths, why not take the subject matter into an environment where those are advantages instead of flaws and add it to the forums? Was it not constructed to host discussions that we'd like to have but this format makes unsuitable? The article is a List Of Your Favorite Awesome Moments, and is not likely to change with any force that we can bring to bear on a wiki. Wanders Nowhere: Hey, where'd all the video game examples go? And shouldn't we put the Live Action TV ones on their own page if we're adding pages for different sections? Zephid: On that note, why is it every other media but Live Action TV was given a page, but Live Action TV stayed on the main page? Is this deliberate, or is someone in the midst of the splitting and I'm just being a dick by pointing this out? Gracie Lizzie:Is it just me or does a Crowning Moment of Awesome sometimes (if not often) cross with a Tear Jerker? Einar: Kings of Power 9000% Moogi: I was thinking. Should we make a page for the 'Defining Moments of Epic Phail?' Basically, they would be moments when a character fails at whatever they are doing so spectacularly that it practically becomes a Crowning Moment Of Awesome onto itself. Anyone like this idea? Thanks to Cassius335 for the name. Cassius335: You're welcome. Though, it probably should be "Crowning Moment of Epic Fail (or Phail. Whichever), to go with the rest of the franchise. And care would have to be taken to stop it turning into another Narm or Dis Continuity or such. One example does occur off-hand: Mr Satan/Hercule Vs Perfect Cell (P.C. simply backhands the guy into a nearby mountain). Could we please fix the title of this trope? "Of" needs to be capitalized so it'll parse correctly. Cassius335: Can we please stop refferring to characters (and worse, entire series) as CMOA's? The key word is "Moment", people. X Shouldve Died: Anyone else notice this? http://www.shortpacked.com/d/20080710.html Fast Eddie: If some want to make/find a suitable crown icon for this, I can hook it up. Citizen: Considering the other "Crowning Moment" pages (i.e. Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming), specifically moving the "of Awesome" pages into a CrowningMoment namespace seems like a bad idea. Fast Eddie: Moving the index page (this page) into the [Crowning Moment=] namespace breaks the indexing for new items. The index goes in Main and the subpages in the namespace. Someguy: I know Just For Fun tropes are Subjective and all, but God, those "ALL OF (X)" examples need to be banned. Lord TNK: Agree I'm enforcing that on Dethroning Moment Of Suck, so that should be enforced here too. This if for moments, not works. Noaqiyeum: Who moved the pile to Sugar Wiki? I can't find any discussion on it. Midna: I'm confused too. I mean, I can understand Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming, but reading up on other people's opinions of what the Funniest. Happening. Ever. is while having to brave bright, cheery colors makes my teeth hurt. Lord Incompetent: You're not the only one annoyed. I vote for changing it back. Ozymandias: Why not just abolish all these idiotic "Sugar Wiki" and "Darth Wiki" things? What the fuck is the point of giving a page a different, annoying color scheme? It's all the same site anyway, so there is literally no point for either to even exist. Bedinsis: I agree. CMOA doesn't belong in sugarwiki. By the way, I don't have an opinion on Ozymandias proposition. Charred Knight: Yes it does, Sugarwiki is where all excessive praising goes, and no section on TV Tropes has more excessive praising than CMOA. Its the ultimate example in Sugar Wiki. Not even Gushing About S Hows You Like has to be split by examples. I mean Code Geass, and G Gundam have over 50 examples each.If that doesn't say Sugar Wiki I don't know what does. Can anyone say why it doesn't belong in Sugar Wiki other than saying it doesn't belong in sugar wiki. MrChaim: Alright, i can see the point of sugar Wiki. Charred Knight raises a fair point on it - However, that being said, The colour scheme really needs to be changed. While i can see where it's comming from, and as cute as that is, for people like myself who have hypersensitivty or the ilk, pages like this can be literally headache enducing. SO in the interestes of readbility, if nothing else, i'd suggest changing the colour scheme to the default Tv Tropes, and giving "Sugar" and "Darth" wiki articles some kind of unique, obvious icon. Alsadius: I'm with Ozymandias on this one - there's no reason for this obnoxious pink colour scheme. I feel like I'm reading a site written by eight year old girls, not twenty year old guys. The black is less wrong, but still silly. It's all one site, arbitrarily splitting it in three with no rhyme or reason is stupid. Took me a while to figure out that I hadn't followed an external link to a lame knockoff site. Master Hand: Another vote in changing it back. Charred Knight: It was changed to reflect the change in posting rules. In the actual site your not allowed to gush, or complain here you are. Since CMOA is nothing but creator, and character worship it was moved to gushing. MrChaim: Okay, that's fair enough. HOWEVER. the color scheme istelf, is what i think (And persoanlyl for me) upsetting a lot of people - I'm not saying incorpate it back into the main site, i'm saying tone the colourscheme to someting less eyebleeding. I again, stand by the suggestion of the default colour scheme, with an obvious, distncit icon to indicate this as Sugar Wiki - and the same for Darth Wiki. WVI: Seriously, make this stop. Biffbiffley Hey guys, I dont' watch Britan has talent, but does this count? Feel free ot put it in the "real" wiki if you think it does. (sorry in advence I don't know the markup langauge well.) http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=39572 Joe CB 1991: Am I The only one here who doesn't like how some of the CMOA pages have been moved to the crowner? Whoever put that Saturn V picture here- thank you. It's perfect. Insanity Prelude: I like crowners, but I wish they were a little easier to navigate. Chris X: Not gonna argue, but... in what episode did Linkara say that quote on this page?
HeartBurn Kid: Can we not keep doing this cycle? Some particular meme or subjective trope gets massively popular on the wiki, people contribute a ton of examples, somebody gets a stick up their ass, and it gets nuked. It's getting really annoying. FFS, people, it's just the internet, you really should relax. Madrugada: Why should this be cut? There needs to be a good reason to nuke a page out of existence. No reason at all has been given. Animeg- people do enjoy the crowning moments and it does have many wicks. I think it should stay. Lale: No! I love these, they're so much fun, they're how we turn TV Tropes into a gateway drug! there's no other place on the Internet for cataloguing pure awesomeness in all media! It has to stay! Move to Just For Fun if you have to, but don't nuke it! |
