The Neptunia series is all about a fictional console war, so there are bound to be plenty of references to video game culture.

Main Series

References from the first Neptunia

• Vert's Limit Break looks like a Giga Drill Break with a Red Ring Of Death.
• Noire's Limit Break looks very suspiciously similar to Yuri's Savage Wolf Fury.
  • To be more exact, Noire performs Yuri's Savage Wolf Fury sword combo barrage, followed by Asbel's Stampede Strike (Juuha Goushouzan) super upperslash, followed by countless sword flashes to dismantle the poor enemies... Did I already mention that Noire is badass?
  • Later games give said Limit Break a completely different animation. As of the release of Victory II, only one game released since the original, Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart, has re-used the original animation.
• Neptune's second Limit Break is reminiscent of Wren's transformations and Wren's Positron Bolt.
• Noire's third weapon is Elysdeon, the description "This sword is rumored to have come from a distant planet, key to fending off some legendary evil".

• When Neptune is in her coma at the beginning of the game, she hopes that she doesn't go crazy and start "collecting rings floating by the ground" or wandering around and "stepping in some ABC gum".

• Neptune: "From start to finish, I'm always at a climax!"
• Neptune once met a strange mangaka that talked about the existence of a giant blue shadow in form of a dragon. Said mangaka wore a gas mask.
• One cutscene has Noire trying to come up with transformation phrases to get more attention. She later gives up, and tries coming up with stuff to say afterwards instead. The entire scene is Reference Overdosed.

• Vert gives us a now-outdated reminder to preorder Hoop: Reach.^ExplanationHyper Dimension Game Neptune was released in Japan on August 19, 2010. The game being bland-named had a world-wide release less than a month later on September 14 (15 for Japan). Hyperdimension Neptunia would not be released until February 15, 2011, thus the reminder is outdated in the English localization for almost half a year
• The party runs across a lone member of S.R.A.T.S. who suggests you should be a "Master of Unlocking". The member even looks like Chris Redfield (his Resident Evil 5 incarnation).
• One of the DLC bosses is a "Traitor Knight" that resembles a gender-flipped Kain Highwind.
• Compa introduces a Fighting Game match: "Heaven or Hell! Let's Rock!"
• Noire attempts to think up a catchphrase. "Through fire, justice is served!"
• The description of the Overlord Momus item says, "If you collect all five, the Overlord will awaken." Overlord Momus, obliterate?
• One of the first few lines Neptune has is, "Neptune does what you all don't," which is appropriate since Sega, which Neptune represents, used "Genesis does what Nintendon't" as an advertising line back in the day. What's more, this was a purely American ad campaign; the translators were actively adding to the shout outs, even obscure ones that many kids today likely wouldn't know about.
• At Leanbox, the party encounters a man who is looking for the culprit who stole the barrier protecting their town. With the exception of where he's holding his weapon, the silhouette really looks like Yuri Lowell.
• Neptune, Compa and IF run into a group of "road pugilists" beating up on barrels and used cars, among them a sumo wrestler and a cute Chinese girl with "really monstrous thighs".
• In another event, they see a group of movers moving boxes so that they can stack them so that they don't leave any gaps.
• A small dungeon in the Dark God's Cave in Lastation was carved by an evil lord with a pickaxe.
• The first time Neptune and her friends prepare to go terraporting, she thinks she's supposed to make a long jump across to reach the other landmass, and IF dares her to put on overalls and a red hat.
• Neptune: "The expo's on like monkey kong!"
• Neptune: "Greedy Boy appears! Command?"
• In the skit "Amnesiac Buddies", Black Heart complains to Neptune that her followers think "[she] only does everything."
• A dungeon in Lowee is named Bruagga Tower.
  • Another in Leanbox (?!) is named Hirool Castle.
• Nep and company are introduced to the Watch & Game in a skit.
• At Lastation, Nep and company encounter aspiring game creator Zach Unfair, whose favorite title is GG7.
• The kid in the skit "Attack of the Cicada Horde" plays too much Cogs of Battle.
• IF: I've never been trapped in a disc before either. We might have to sit tight until we're summoned back out.
  Compa: By Mr. Heretic? Do you think he'll ever throw the disc at someone and say "I choose you, Compiffytune?"
• Neptune: "Pretty and mysterious Neptune of love and justice. In the name of the Basilicom, I'll punish you!"
• One of the optional quests is titled "The Goddess Who Leapt Through Time".
• One of the DLC quests comes from an Overlord whose level has deteriorated down to level 1 while he was asleep.
• Neptune: "Let's transform and roll out!"
• There is a bird-type enemy called the Choocoboo, but it's colored pink instead of yellow.
• The skit "Master Idol Production" is a huge reference to The Idolmaster.
• The skit "Brain Age Score" has Nep, Compa, and Iffy having mental ages of 40-60, according to the results.
• Noire: Meh. Maybe someone's breeding them in a monster ranch or something.
  Neptune: Yeah, whatever. Monster Rancher isn't a job. That's so silly!
• In the Normal Ending, after defeating Arfoire's second form...
  Neptune: Drat. When she turned into the dragon, I thought she was gonna offer me half the world or something.
• In one of the RED skits, Red pulls out an assortment of improbable weapons: a kendama, a throwing disc, and a yo-yo. She tells IF that some kid fought off aliens with a yo-yo to rescue his dad.
  • Later, while being used as Red's personal Lap Pillow, IF remarks that her head is really heavy, like a barbarian who powers up by eating caveman meat.
• Neptune (to Avenir president Singe): "As a man of many vectors would say, resistance is futile."
• Arfoire: "Who're spelunking enthusiasts?! Don't they blast ghosts with oxygen tanks and stuff?!"
  • Funnily enough, Victory II, released 5 years later, has a collaboration with Spelunker, with a game mode aptly-titled "Neplunker".
• In the skit "Amateur Writer's Contest", Blanc/White Heart wants to buy a personal computer for herself, but nothing with Blast Processing.
• One of Neptune's battle start quotes is "I can already see this ending..."
• The trophy you get for finishing the game is called "Nepgagaga Complete!"
• When Neptune sees White Heart in her HDD form, Nep keeps referring to her as a Newtype.
• Some of the Trophy names from the English version are "Nep-Nep Rocket" and "Virtually Fighting".
• One of 5pb.'s level up quotes is "Tutturuu!".

References found in Neptunia mk2:

• Horsebirds won't make any sense unless you've played Final Fantasy XIV where Chocobos were renamed such (for about ten seconds, due to fan outcry). Compile Heart took it up to eleven.
• Steins;Gate characters Kurisu Makise, Mayuri Shiina, and Itaru "Daru" Hashida make a cameo as part of 5pb's attacks.
• Rorona, Totori, the Chims, Ceci, and Mimi show up for some of Gust's attacks.
• Nepgear's dream reenacts the entire sequence of the third episode of Puella Magi Madoka Magica right down to two of the Japanese VAs (Nippon Ichi/Nisa being Mami and Uni being Sayaka) and of course includes the head chomp.
  • Would have also been an awesome Actor Allusion for the English dub too, because Nepgear's VA is Madoka (and Uni is also voiced by Sayaka's voice actress, Sarah Anne Williams). Alas, Casting Gag since the event with the English voices used isn't dubbed during that scene.
• Two things from the opening. Besides the obvious narration, pay attention to the tower of TVs during the opening. Remind you of something?
• Gamindustri's preferred social networking site is Chirper.
• When gaining a level, Neptune may occasionally hum the victory tune from Final Fantasy.
• 5pb provides the voice for a synthesizer, but becomes upset that people are making her sing and dance to rather strange things.
• Metal Dogoos are hidden in a single group of enemies in LAN Castle. They're worth about 4 times the Experience and twice the Credits as the rest of the fight, and their Metal Jelly sells for another 11111 Credits.
• Vert's Military Dress costume adjusts her color scheme in such a way that she looks like Luka.
• Ram insists that Lowee's best games would easily be the Pocketed Monstrosities franchise, with over 1,510,376 monsters to catch and raise.
  • In the same scene, the game Uni plays is a hunting game where she gets together with a group of friends and hunt a bunch of really big monsters.
  • Also, Planeptune had a game where everyone had beam swords in outer space.
  • Nepgear mentions an old game that had a 60 million credit budget. Her favorite parts were operating a forklift and using her allowance to get things from vending machines.
• Compa's cake is never a lie.
• In one of the events, Neptune tells her sister that the duty of a goddess is to wait for the phone on their desk to ring, then visit the person calling and grant their wish.
• The description for the rock icon quotes the famous "I Got a Rock" scene from It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown verbatim.
• When you start a new game, Meijin Takahashi (of Adventure Island fame) will give you a friendly reminder not to stare too close to the screen while playing.
• In a Chirper event focusing on Nisa, Blanc is reminded of a game where the main character is part of a secret Broadway troupe living in New York. The game in question is Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love, which was released by NIS America.
• Blanc mentions that she likes ordering books from Blarnes and Foible (Barnes and Noble).
• The first time the group meets Linda (a thug working for ASIC and a recurring annoyance throughout the game), they mock her "soldier" title and tell her she's nothing more than an "underling" (perhaps even a Mid-Boss?) Just as in Disgaea, Linda's on-screen title changes to reflect this, and it sticks with her for the rest of the game.
• One of the random chirpers in Lastation is an idol singer named Nana Kimizu. She even dresses very much like Nana Mizuki.
  • She even mentions that she can fight while singing. This becomes Hilarious in Hindsight when Symphogear debuted months later in January of 2012, where she does just that as Tsubasa Kazanari.
• Nisa's entire second chirper event is one big reference to Kaiketsu Zubat.
• When you gain access to the Colosseum, Neptune suggests that they shout "Are you not entertained?" during fights.
• Cave's weapons of choice include a feather and a pair of scissors.
• There's a regular enemy called Tokimeki Sister, complete with a character portrait and a visual novel-esque dialogue box.
• One trophy is called "Take off, every CPU"

References found in Neptunia Victory:

• One of Izawa's trailers show off a lot of works from Osamu Tezuka, such as Black Jack and Astro Boy.
• In Lastation, one of the people you can talk to is Snake Hayter who hides in a cardboard box.
• The ending shows off Pac-Man, and The Legend of Zelda to name a few.
• Yet another Vocaloid reference is made by Noire's Stone Leek costume by name and description. However design wise it looks closer to being Dees Vanguard than Miku.
• When Mr.Badd reveals himself, he orders his soldiers to make sure to search the CPUs to be sure they have no game-breaking escapipes to warp out of prison with.
• Puella Magi Madoka Magica gets referenced quite frequently throughout the game.
  • There is a quest given by a "Uni Sound-Alike". She needs you to kill a few Cuberials who tricked her into taking on a curse to make a wish. Another quest is given by a "Small White Animal" who has made so many contracts with young girls that it needs you to go out and get it some more magical contract paper.
  • In Chapter 7 a new NPC that looks almost exactly like Kyubey in shows up in Planeptune named Rokubei. It wonders why you'd be asking it about a contract and insists that it's just a cat.
  • One of the regular enemies one can encounter is called Contracted Angel and it looks oddly familiar.
• When Nepgear is talking with Vert about how she's no longer the main character like she was in the last game, Blanc comes by to inform her that she has Dragonball Syndrome, where the older family member passes the lead role to a younger one only to steal it back and that it can only get worse from there for the younger character.
• (after asking Plutie to clean Neptune's ears) My body is ready.
• Noire's Elysdeon returns from the first game. The description now also mentioning that it was built by Landale & Landeel Enterprises.
• In one event Neptune shouts out "The Wheel of Fate is Turning, Heaven or Hell, let's rock!"
• Rei's entire past is a big shout out to the Atari console and The Great Video Game Crash of 1983.
• On the way to Lowee the group comes across a patrol and Neptune suggests that they "go all Roads of Fury on them." And that she gets to be the guy on roller skates.
• Plutia's Thunder! and Super Thunder! attacks change to Thunder Blade and Super Thunder Blade in HDD.
• From the DLC costume pics for Tekken, she gets Kuma and Lili's costume.
• When Plutia is about to transform to give Noire her "most popular lecture" in chapter 3, Neptune tells the player, in the Japanese dialogue, to "Press the B Button to stop the evolution". In the English dialogue, she simply tells the player to hit the square button on their controller to turn on the text skip function.
• Also in Japanese, one way to make a kid laugh is to say "Bero bero bwaa!"
  • Speaking of which one of Neptune's expression is the same as the Yukkuri.
• In order to find out where the IF, Compa, and Peashy babies came from, Blanc thinks of the baby-carrying stork.
• Some of your scouts include Maryo and Player 2, Amamiya Lint, and Mao.
  • Player 2 also mentions that he's not looking after a mansion or anything!
  • When he's resting as a scout, Player 2's activity is "inferiority complex...". Meanwhile, Maryo is doing some princess rescuin' during his downtime.
  • Also, Amamiya Lint is a complete recolor of Ragna with the exact same sword.
• Rom and Ram's DLC weapons are staves respectively based on a White Dragon representing Truth and a Black Dragon representing Ideals.
  • Most weapon DLC contain similar references, with one of Vert's weapons making a reference to the large size of the Xbox, Blanc's weapons referencing Super Smash Bros. and the Wii U, etc.
• One event has Blanc stating "I don't know everything, I only know what I know." She also references Dragon Ball by name in the same scene.
• Victory introduces Shampurus and Alraunes as enemies.
• After being punched by Tekken, Neptune has a delayed reaction after such extreme power saying "FATALITYYYY!!!!
• After Neptune and co. get back from Leanbox and notice how depressed Nepgear has been since Neptune left again, Neptune says "Uguu".
• In chapter 5 After everyone get back to Planeptune's basilicom and Neptune wants to relax, Nepgear tells her not to turn into a Snorlax.
• Some of the lost places include an Emblem of Fire Castle and Mushroom with eyes.
• Dungeons include the Metroid Shelter and the Halo Forest.
• The CPU doppelganger Optional Bosses look like stick men riding paper airplanes with heads shaped like the Playstation button shapes.
• At one point Neptune says Noire would be scared if Iris Heart flew in with a flamethrower and a blue turtle shell.
• During a conversation in Chapter 4, Neptune references Creedence Clearwater Revival, of all things.
  Noire: ...Anyway, I found something that lends credence to the tale.
  Neptune: A clearwater revival?
• When discussing who is sister of who in Chapter 4, Neptune tries to get everyone back on track.
  Neptune: Hey! This isn’t the time for us to gab about sisterly love and traveling pants! Nepgear!?
• Atranger is a reference to Geppy-X.
• In the description of the Mai Waifu accessory for Plutia and Neptune, it tells you to give it to someone who seems totally wifey and Moe Moe Kyun.
• During one of the Nepstation Segments, the game mentions "A raging treat, Blanc manju". This is quite obviously a reference to the "Rage Manju" (better known as the RageCandyBar in localizations) from Pokemon Gold and Silver and their remakes. The fact that Blanc is the CPU for the SNES (i.e. Nintendo) and Lowee just looks exactly like Ecruteak City from the remakes makes this even more obvious.
• Whenever Nepgear receives a new affinity, the Item Get! jingle that plays is the same as several other Compile Heart titles (but not used in the Neptunia series itself).
• The protagonist from Devil Summoner makes a cameo as a recurring quest giver, one of the quests being named "Negotiation Failure" and asks you to kill some Kerberos enemies.
• The ending credits has an RPG-style story where Neptune and Purple Heart are portrayed as separate characters instead of alter egos. After being injured fighting Anonydeath, Neptune merges with Purple Heart a la Shin Hayata with Ultraman. One of Purple Heart's attacks was Purple Slash, a nod to Ultraman's Ultra Slash. When an injured Purple Heart was visited by Yellow Heart, the entire scene frames like Zoffy to Ultraman after the latter was injured from fighting Zetton. At the end of the credits, Purple Heart separated from Neptune and left as an energy ball of light, akin to the Ultras' mode of transportation.

References found in Neptunia VII

• For starters, the title itself is a homage to Final Fantasy VII. The odd title itself seems to be a reference to how Square-Enix stopped re-numbering the games that they exported to Western audiences (since three games in the series weren't exported to the United States for years) and instead opted to go for the same labeling worldwide, although in this game's case, the seemingly-random jump forward is entirely deliberate.
• There are several Gundam references:
  • One NPC dubs himself Meijin Takanashi III.
  • The Bit-type enemy in Machine-type category seems have a name based from the main lead Gundams in Early Universal Century era.
  • One of Nepgear's new EXE Drives, "Bit Combination", brings to mind Gundam's liberals use of Attack Drone's, especially Kshatriya. She may even quote Kira Yamato when using this EXE Drive.
  • Affimojas' very ''The School of the Busty Blonde! The winds of the king! Zenshin! Keiretsu! Tenpa Kyouran! Look! The chest is swelling up!"
• S-Sha, being a Moe Anthropomorphism of Square Enix, naturally takes inspiration from both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, two of the company's most popular franchises.
  • Her overall appearance evokes Cloud, Squall and Lightning, while her Gold Form gains a single wing, just like Sephiroth.
  • One special attack transforms the screen into the front-view combat mode of the classic Dragon Quest games, another evokes Omnislash, Cloud's ultimate attack (specifically, the Advent Children version), and still another recalls both Ultima, Holy, Flare and Meteor, traditional high-tier Final Fantasy spells.
  • After winning a battle, there's a chance that S-Sha will hum the Final Fantasy victory theme or say "This is my story."
  • S-Sha's backstory is a giant reference to how Squaresoft merged with Enix Corporation, complete with S-Sha mentioning about how she failed at making a movie.
  • When the Candidates have to fight her to enlist her help in the third arc, at 50% health, she says: "Your fear will be gone in a flash."
  • S-Sha on saving the CPUs from brainwashing. "You don't need a reason to help people."
• C-Sha represents Capcom.
  • Her blue color scheme evokes Mega Man, and she wears a blue beret like Jill Valentine in Resident Evil. When she transforms into Gold Form, she gets a handgun appendage to complete the Jill comparison.
  • Some of her special attacks include Mega Man's Arm Cannon, a Monster Hunter-grade BFS, and a combo that wouldn't look out-of-place in Street Fighter.
  • Some of her quotes in battle are taken from Sengoku Basara, particularly Date Masamune.
  • After defeating an enemy, she will either quip "Jackpot!" or "Go home and be a family man!"
  • She contemplates being the type of character who ends up in heart-print underwear when hit.
  • Before a transformed Blanc squares off against her, C-Sha says "It's always fun to kill a god!", one of Akuma's opening lines in Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
  • When the Candidates have to fight her to enlist her help in the third arc, she will say: "This is what I live for. I'm absolutely crazy about it!"
  • Some of C-Sha's weapons and accessories were inspired by Morrigan and Lilith Aensland.
• As Bandai's avatar, B-Sha's skillset includes elements from Gundam and Kamen Rider.
  • Her "Presto Mask" persona is based on Banpresto, who is best known for developing the Super Robot Wars series and features a mask as its logo.
• K-Sha symbolizes Konami and their franchises.
  • Her Gold Form takes on a Metal Gear-themed (particularly REX and to the lesser extent, ZEKE), complete with Solid Snake's/Big Boss' eyepatch and Raiden's "Jack the Ripper" personality. Her obsession with Noire pretty much similar with Ocelot's obsession with Big Boss.
  • When the Candidates have to fight her to enlist her help in the third arc, she will say Gray Fox's Badass Boast: "A cornered fox is more dangerous than a jackal!"
  • When her turn comes up, she sometimes says "Kept you waiting, huh?", one of Snake's famous lines.
• All the Gold Third members initiate their one of their SP Skills by drawing a card a la Yu-Gi-Oh!.
• The game ups the ante with even more KanColle shout outs.
  • If the player manage to answer all of Nepstation Millionep Quiz correctly, the main Neptune will congratulates player and, in the Japanese version, say "Panpakapan!" at the beginning.
  • One of the quests is from a client named Ikazuchi and is titled "I'm Here With You!◊
  • At one point, an admiral will remark that his submarine staff is boycotting because they hate Or(n)el Cruising.◊
  • One of the Quests is from an idol named KA☆NA (Read it backwards) who says Myaha!.
  • One of the Quests from the admiral asks you to kill monsters because they sunk his wife, Kisaragi. Again.
• Certainly a heavy contender for the most suprising, and even endearing, homage in the franchise so far, the True Ending Credits Roll is a clear cut reproduction of the Title Screen, Visuals, Character Select and Battle Screen found in Live A Live translated into Victory II own events, a tragic JRPG with quite the original tale and an infamous twist, a Cult Classic that has never been referenced with such passion in anywhere before, being noticed in such a bright and cute series of all places. It also references a large number of classic arcade/Famicom games, including Dig Dug, Pooyan, The Legend of Kage, The Tower of Druaga, Space Harrier, Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Atlantis no Nazo, Popeye no Eigo Asobi, Adventure Island, etc.
• In order to fix up Histoire, Neptune needs to find Sanshiro's Soulful Patch. Noire even calls him one of Planeptune's great men.
• After the heroines successfully retrieve the console from Kurome, the Dogoo-Man manages to land a hit while shouting "One Punch!"
• Messages that can appear on the game over screen include "And they were never heard from again", "Nep's party was annihilated!", and It's a sad thing that your adventures have ended here!".
• When going through Azna=Leb's mansion, Steamax finds a copy of a Midwinter Afternoon's Dream.
• Another one relating to Azna=Leb, when Blanc hits him when he is arrested he shouts the iconic line "You hit me, not even my father hit me."
• The description for the Nepgeardam card:
  Who is she? Where did she come from? Where is she going?
• C-Sha's Rush attack, Ora Ora, is a series of rapid fire punches.
  • Even better, Capcom had their very own JoJo game, Heritage for the Future.
• Blanc tells C-Sha to grit her teeth before punching her square in the face. Hmm...
  • Blanc hits Azna=Leb as well in her route and he comments on how hehad never been hit before, not even by his father.
• Uni's Railgun specifies that it does not fire arcade coins.
• One of Adult Neptune's possible battle quotes is "Useless, useless, useless!"
• Should regular Neptune fall in battle, one of her possible quotes is "Another one bites the dust".
• Nitro+'s Taurus Raging Bull revolver is taken◊ directly◊ from the visual novel Vampirdzhija Vjedogonia.

• When Compa strips Neptune to wrap her in bandages, Neptune complains about being nude, saying she doesn't need to make herself more powerful.
  • She also complains about being wrapped up tighter than a fighting game mummy.
• Neptune, when Histoire didn't know if the girl could use HDD, said she'd go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb.
• When Neptune and Compa meet IF for the first time, Nep worries that the Guard Vermin she defeated earlier is out for "revengeance."
• When Vert introduces the group to Ran-Ran, she says that Ran-Ran is the Stand Alone Complex of Leanbox.
• The Snake Hayter NPC is back as David Snake.
• The Super Mario Bros. reference returns from the original, only slightly altered; when Neptune considers jumping from land to land shouting "Yahoo!", IF suggests she grow a moustache first.
• When Neptune catches up to Noire, she shouts "Gotta Catch 'em all!"
• MAGES. seeks out Doc Tear Popper, the drink of the chosen, and speaks of the Organization that has removed all traces of it.
  • Aside from calling Noire her "assistant", she also makes "Hyper Gadgets," one among them "a microwave that will turn both food and humans into gel..."
  • A couple of her costumes also reference Steins;Gate and Robotics;Notes Characters and MAGES. Including Kurisu's outfit.
  • Also, Doc Tear Popper is a fairly well hidden Bland-Name Product of Doctor Pepper.

• In one chapter of the manga, Neptune ends up babysitting her sister, Uni, Rom and Ram after they were accidentally transformed into infants. At one point, the baby carriage she was keeping the latter two girls in ends up rolling down a road. After Neptune manages to catch up to it, she realizes that they passed by a bunch of floating blocks with question marks, out of one of which popped a turtle shell, which Rom/Ram happily throws away. It gets doubly funny when you remember that some of the playable characters in Mario Kart actually are babies, riding in motorized baby carriages.
