Shout Out / Fantasy of Utter Ridiculousness

Go To

This is a list of shout-outs and references from the Megas XLR/Touhou Project crossover "Fantasy of Utter Ridiculousness". Considering that half the source material is a walking shout-out to the 1980s, there's bound to be plenty of these.

Main Story and Alternate Ending

  • Commentary from Yukari during the prologue implies that Road Rovers took place in the same universe. Supplementary materials posted by the author suggests that it was more likely that she experienced the cartoon's events in her dreams.
  • Part of Flandre's panicked ranting in Chapter Two suggests that she has seen Danny Kaye's The Inspector General. According to the author there was supposed to be a scene that depicted Ran showing Flandre the film behind Remilia's back, but it never materialized.
  • During the Spell Card demonstration Coop declares that Radius—likely the in-universe Gradius equivalent—has nothing on true danmaku.
  • Word of God declared that Patchouli's constant muttering was supposed to mirror Popeye's tendency to do the same thing. Suika later paraphrases Wimpy when challenging Coop to a fight.
  • Patchouli, when experiencing combat from Megas's perspective for the first time:
  • Yukari dreams of The Far Side. "No, Mister Larson, I'm not afraid of ducks watching me..."
  • Z, a show discussed by Coop and Jamie, is meant to be an in-universe take on V (1983).
  • The maid who answers to "Get That Blasted Fairy Out Of The Kitchen!" is meant to refer to a one-shot Get Fuzzy character with a similar moniker.
  • Coop at one point says "Trust me. I know what I'm doing" before attempting to use a sledgehammer against Suika. Patchouli even notes that she doesn't feel that confident in his tactics.
  • When chewing out Remilia in the final chapter, Patchouli directly quotes Mr. T.
  • After reclaiming her prized gourd, Suika happily states to let the good times roll.
  • Jamie comments to Yukari that pitting her against R.E.G.I.S. would be like pitting a bazooka against a soccer ball. You can tell that she's getting ideas about that.
  • The combined elemental attack featured in the Alternate Ending is called the Megas Buster.
  • Patchouli becomes sorely tempted to try playing something called Last Fantasy...

Extra Stage - Fire Flower

  • According to Koakuma, the odds of Patchouli taking back her books from Marisa are the same as those of Han Solo surviving a flight through an asteroid field. Serves as two references in one, as it keeps one of Marisa's cards from Imperishable Night in mind.
  • Alice's new scarf is that of the 4th Doctor's.
  • The gag involving the Long List of Noodle Implements—with Yuyuko saying that an adequate explanation of their usages "gets rather technical," followed by something happening off-screen, and Yukari screaming "AAAAGGGH! All right, all right, I'm up!"—is copied wholesale from Garfield.
  • One of the aforementioned Noodle Implements is a snappily dressed jackalope plush doll. This refers to Jack Ching Badabing, who was a fixture on the America's Funniest Home Videos spin-off America's Funniest People.
  • "Welcome to the Eastern Wonderland. We're all mad here."
    • In addition, Alice makes multiple references to her namesake, including a comment about not following good advice that she gave herself.
  • The baseball game playing during the Batter Up! sequence was confirmed to be the original RBI Baseball.
  • Alice describes Yuuka to Reisen as "an abomination in the shape of a flower", the same description Chara used for Flowey in Ask Frisk and Company.
  • While chasing after Megas, Marisa quotes Calvin's Dad by saying that being an adult's not too different from being a kid, except that they're more attached to their toys.
  • Megas breaks out the Ideon Gun during the fight.
  • Yuuka's cry of "Oblivion awaits!" when firing the Double Spark is one of the Dark Archon's order confirmation quotes.
  • According to the author, one of the inspirations for Megas's finishing move was Kraidgief's Hokuto No Shinken: Spinning Piledriver.
  • The astrology tome that Patchouli claimed as a consolation prize is actually the in-universe version of the complete The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
  • In the aftermath, Yuuka recovers from the battle in a grove of fireberries.
  • During the shut-down sequence that ends the story, the person saying "Eh, I'm outta here" is supposed to be Mandy.

Other

  • One omake features Marisa watching the Megas-Yuuka fight and wondering aloud: "You ever wonder why we're here?" Patchouli is quick to put two and two together and curtails the discussion before it starts.
