Series: Sonic The Hedgehog

alt title(s): Satam Sonic The Hedgehog; Sat AM
"Blue streak, speeds by; Sonic the Hedgehog Too fast for the naked eye, Sonic the Hedgehog Sonic — He can really move! Sonic — He's got an attitude! Sonic — He's the fastest thing alive! He's the fastest thing alive! He's the fastest thing alive!"
The more serious Sonic The Hedgehog cartoon adaptation made in the 90s, which inspired the Archie Comics series that's still ongoing (although the comic book came to the consumers first). It is a sharp contrast to its contemporary and more comedic weekday counterpart where Sonic was a drifter traveling the planet with Tails. Also known as " Sat AM" (as in Saturday Morning, when it aired on the American ABC network), to distinguish it from Adventures (which was in syndication on weekdays) and the games alike.
The series featured Sonic as a resistance commando, fighting against Dr. Robotnik who has already enslaved most of the planet Mobius and turned it into a cold, urban, metal nightmare. Unlike other versions of the character, Robotnik's armies are comprised of factory-assembled robot shock troops rather than from animals trapped in robot shells; said trapped animals underwent Unwilling Roboticisation and served as forced laborers instead. Sonic is not the actual leader of the resistance group, but serves as their most reliable soldier. The leader, Sally Acorn, lost her father, while Sonic lost his uncle as one of the mindless robots. The show dealt with much more mature subject matters such as coping with loss and the trials during war.
The series is still highly regarded by its loyal legions of fans, though to a degree that in recent years has caused a great deal of friction within the wider Sonic fanbase over just how good it actually was and how much of its style (if any) should be adopted by modern Sonic works.
The show provides examples of:
- Accidental Innuendo — Bunnie's infamous "one-eyed snake" line.
- Action Girl — Bunnie and Sally
- Adaptation Decay — This seemed to happen to all the early Sonic based cartoons. It had little to do with the games. (Though it is supposedly accurate to the Archie Comic Books.)
- Aliens Speaking English — Along with some instances of Antoine speaking French.
- Alternate Continuity
- And I Must Scream — Roboticised victims remain fully aware of everything they do while under Robotnik's control, "we just can't do anything about it."
- Angst What Angst — So yeah, according to Uncle Chuck, once you're roboticized you can see everything that the unfeeling metal shell your body was changed into is doing from somewhere within, but are completely helpless to control yourself. What's for lunch?
- Art Shift — Many character designs were changed for the second season, if even just slightly (like giving Bunnie pupils) or drastically (looking at Rotor, you wouldn't recognise him from season one to season two).
- Ascended Extra — Three of the original Freedom Fighters are based upon the small animals released in Sonic 1: Sally Acorn is a squirrel and Rotor is a walrus, both found in Marble Zone, while Bunnie Rabbot is a rabbit (found in Green Hill Zone), though both Bunny and Rotor had different names and one of them a different gender from the original cast Sally was in.
- Badass Mustache — Dr. Robotnik
- Badbutt — Sonic, Sally and Bunny
- Battle Couple — Sonic and Sally
- Big Brother Mentor — Sonic for Tails
- Bragging Theme Tune
- Breaking The Fourth Wall — The end of the season 2 premiere episode ends by Sonic grabbing the iris-out.
- Brother Cluck (also Muttski)
- Brought Down To Normal — "Super Sonic"
- Butt Monkey — Antoine
- Catch Phrase — "Gotta juice!" and "I'm waiiiiiiting!" in the first season. The former is dropped in the second season Juice, during the height of the Steroid Era in American sports/baseball, the latter toned down.
- There's also "way past cool!" which seemed to get used even more in the second season to make up for the other two catchphrases.
- Chaste Toons — Robotnik, with his nephew Snively, qualifies for this. (It was in the comics that we'd get to meet Snively's father.)
- Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey — Antoine, unfortunately
- Comic Trio — Sally as the Leader, Sonic as the cheery follower and Antoine as the powerless one.
- Criminal Amnesiac — "No Brainer"
- Crowning Music Of Awesome — Oh, the theme song...
- Cute Bruiser — Bunnie
- Cut Short — The series ended on a cliffhanger in which Dr. Robotnik appeared to have died but his increasingly dissatisfied henchman Snively has plans to usurped his place as the series' primary antagonist, revealing a threatening new foe, shown out of the darkness with menacing red eyes. Whoever this new character was, viewers never found out, as the series was abruptly canceled. Writer Ben Hurst revealed his plans for a third season where the mysterious red eyes belonged to Ixis Naugus, a minor villain featured earlier in the series and a former partner of Dr. Robotnik. The intended story was adapted by the Archie comics, but because the comic strove to merge the other (often conflicting) versions of the franchise, it fell short of serving as a pseudo-conclusion for Sonic SatAM.
- Darker And Edgier — Compared to all the other Sonic cartoons.
- Demoted To Extra — Since this show has a full cast of characters, iconic sidekick Tails is reduced to minor character status. Also, Bunnie and Rotor get smaller roles in season 2.
- Dressing As The Enemy — Sally, Bunnie and Antoine do this in one episode. It doesn't go well. They do it again in season 2 with better results.
- Everything's Better With Princesses — Sally
- Egopolis — Robotropolis, formerly Mobotropolis.
- Episode Title Card
- Evil Overlord — Robotnik
- Evil Sounds Deep — Robotnik provides a wonderful example.
- Expository Theme Tune — Quoted above.
- Fetish Fuel — This show can probably be attributed to 90% of the furry art and fiction on the net.
- First Name Ultimatum — SNIVELAYY!
- Five Man Band
- Getting Crap Past The Radar — Bunnie's "one eyed snake" remark. If you don't get it, one of the words in this phrase will clear it up. "Snoopingas usual, I see."
- Green Aesop — It's subtle and unannoying for once.
- Hair Today Gone Tomorrow
- Half Dressed Cartoon Animal — Most of the good guys are missing clothing in some way. Sally is most well known for this.
- Heroes Want Red Heads — Princess Sally Acorn.
- Heroic Sacrifice — Cat in the first episode.
- Hey, It's That Voice! — Jim Cummings, Charlie Adler, Cree Summer, Tim Curry, Kath Soucie, Rob Paulsen... among others. The team of actors providing the voices for this show each have a long list of acting gigs under their belts, so it would be surprising if you didn't recognize at least one of the characters voices from somewhere else.
- Hollywood Cyborg — Bunnie was rescued when she was partially converted into a robot; she retained her free will and gained Super Strength in the bargain.
- Honorary Uncle — Tails calls Sally "Aunt Sally," and everyone calls Sonic's uncle "Uncle Chuck"
- Horrible Judge Of Character — King Acorn didn't know Julian was evil, and took allot of convincing before he figured it out (too late).
- Humans Are Bastards — Robotnik is pretty damn evil. Snively isn't any better
- Idiosyncratic Episode Naming — Every episode in season 1 (except for the pilot, "Heads or Tails") had "Sonic" in the title. Super Sonic, Ultra Sonic, Hooked on Sonics etc.
- Incredibly Lame Pun — Bunnie Rabot
- Interspecies Romance — Sonic/Sally
- Jerk With A Heart Of Gold — Antoine has his moments.
- La Resistance — The good guys.
- Lighter And Fluffier — Season 2 was more light hearted than the first season. Including Robotnik cracking a few jokes, and the infamous Margarine! scene.
- The Load — Antoine
- Malaproper — Antoine
- Mordor — Robotropolis is right up there with Midgar when it comes to dark, polluted hellholes.
- Myth Arc
- Non Lethal Warfare
- Phrase Catcher — "Shut up, Antoine!"
- Poke The Poodle — Yet again, the infamous Margarine! scene.
- I think this is arguable, considering that it was working - Antoine was just about to give in before Sonic showed up. Perhaps Cool And Unusual Punishment would be a better fit?
- Depends whether the focus is on the torturer or the tortureee. Why'd he think it'd work at all, because it's Antoine, or because he's Snively? If it's the latter or both, it's a poke. Could be a cool poke though.
- Just before the scene, Snively researched Antoine, and found that this was his weakness. What better way to torture an OCD sufferer than by intentionally performing their target focus incorrectly in their presence, while they are powerless to fix it?
- Post Kiss Catatonia — Parodied in "Hooked On Sonics"
- Power Loss Makes You Strong — "Super Sonic" involved Sonic losing his speed and saving the day without it.
- Remember The New Guy / The Scrappy — Dulcy the Dragon
- Rhymes On A Dime — Sonic.
- Right Hand Cat — If a right-hand-robotic-chicken counts.
- Sacrificial Lamb — Cat in "Sonic Boom".
- Science Fiction Versus Fantasy — The episode "Super Sonic" has a literal Magical Computer, for one thing, and it's impossible to tell if phlebotinum like the Power Rings are Magitek or Magic From Technology.
- Science Is Bad — Subverted rather nicely. The Robotizer in itself is not an evil device. It was created by Uncle Chuck to allow the elderly and the injured to live longer. Things only went bad when Robotnik stole it and reprogrammed it to make loads of people turn into robotic slaves.
- Screwed By The Network — ABC put the show up against Power Rangers. The results were not pretty.
- Sealed Evil In A Can — According to the wizard Lazar, he can't just destroy his computer of magic spells because doing so would release all the evil it contains.
- Sealed With A Kiss
- She's A Man In Japan — Sally Acorn started as Sega of America and Europe's name for the tiny squirrel Sonic would rescue from badniks in Sonic 1. In Japan, the tiny squirrel was male and named "Ricky".
- Smooch Of Victory — Sally gives these all the time.
- The Starscream — Snivley in season 2.
- Superhero — Rotor refers to Sonic as a Super Hero in the episode Sub Sonic.
- Super Speed — "Sonic! He's the fastest thing alive!"
- Super Strength — Bunnie
- Temple Of Doom — "Sonic and the Secret Scrolls"
- Too Good To Last — It was canceled after only two seasons, on a cliffhanger!
- Totally Radical — Sonic talks like this in all of his shows.
- Trademark Favorite Food — Sonic's chili dogs (a trait shared with Adventures).
- Trap Door
- Twenty Minutes Into The Future
- Unwilling Roboticisation — Trope Namer
- Villain World
- Well Excuse Me Princess — Sally
- The Wesley — Dulcy the Dragon.
- What Does She See In Him? — Antoine asks this of Sally and Sonic in "Hooked On Sonics."
- Word Of God — The answers to questions about the series-ending cliffhanger were eventually discovered in interviews with the writing staff, including some plot threads which were supposed to continue from this point, such as Snively's Heel Face Turn, Robotnik becoming Nagus' Right Hand Man as the latter became the series' Big Bad, the introduction of Knuckles, and increased prominence for Tails.
- You Have Failed Me — Said by Robotnik in "Hooked On Sonics."
- Your Worst Nightmare — "Sonic's Nightmare"
- The episode in question is prime Nightmare Fuel for any child who watches it as well: Sonic's eponymous nightmare is watching Sally being roboticised, on-screen and pretty graphically. At the same time she's throwing insults at him - insults made much more threatening than her usual banter by the rather sickened tone of voice she uses.
