Tropes

  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Lecter about to summon the most powerful creature the Big Five has, and it's very familiar to Yugi and Joey.
  • Defensive Feint Trap: As Joey says, playing a weaker monster in attack mode and a face-down card is literally "the oldest trick in the duel book," definitely not something the King of Games would try, but Nesbitt is so arrogant that he falls for Yugi's ploy anyway and destroys the trap, not realizing that Yugi was tricking him into playing a Magic Card.
  • Draw Aggro: Yugi manages to lure Nesbitt into attacking him to stop him from wiping out Joey's life points.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Just as Nesbitt attacks Yugi's monster with Machine King, Lecter tries to stop him. This is a sign that Yugi not only tricked Nesbitt to attack him when he unknowingly activated Yugi’s monster's special ability that makes stronger than Machine King, but also lured away from attacking Joey.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Lecter tries to stop Nesbitt from attacking Yugi's monster, but he doesn't listen and not only gets his Machine King destroyed and loses some life points but passes up a chance to wipe out Joey.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Yugi of all people pulls this stunt by setting a seemingly obvious trap for Nesbitt, who falls for the ploy as do even Yugi's friends! The rest of the Big Five don't fall for it but by the time they realize what's happening and try to warn Nesbitt it's too late. He destroys his trap and attacks but it backfires. It turns out the main reason Yugi did this was to draw their attention away from Joey, who was actually defenseless at the moment.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Yugi is setting up his decoy trap mentioned above, Joey is freaking out and tries to warn Yugi that it won't work. Then it does. Yugi thanks Joey for playing along, saying his acting helped pull it off, so Joey just decides to go along with it. It's pretty clear however that Yugi knew Joey wasn't acting and just wanted to help him save face.
  • This Cannot Be!: The dub's Catchphrase is used when Joey switches Injection Fairy Lily from her very strong Attack Mode to her easily defeatable Defense Mode.
    Lecter: You can't!
    Joey: I just did!
  • Wham Shot: Kaiba is being shown old movies of his stepfather with Noah, the film to a funeral for Noah.

Oldest Trick in the Duel Book?

Yugi's friends and enemies can't believe he tried to pull off the most amateur move possible in a duel. Nesbitt sees right through his trap... or does he...?
