• Adaptation-Induced Plot Hole: This is the debut of Big Shield Gardna. In the manga, anime, and TCG/OCG, it has 100 ATK and 2600 DEF. However, the anime nerfed it so it would have the same effect as its real life counterpart - if attacked while in Defense Mode, it will switch to Attack Mode. Arkana could have attacked Big Shield Gardna with Dark Magician then finished it off with Doll of Demise, wiping out Yugi's Life Points, but he and many other Duelists afterwards would always ignore its weakness and instead either leave it on the field until Yami/Yugi needed to Tribute it or they had something powerful enough to destroy it in Defense Mode, simply due to the fact that it was impossible the manga.
• Fearful Symmetry: At one point, Yugi's Dark Magician battles Arkana's, with both duelists giving the same commands.
  "Dark Magician, attack with Dark Magic now!" (both Magicians destroy each other) "And now my Dark Magician will return! Monster Reborn!" (both Magicians reappear)
• Forced to Watch: Yugi's Dark Magician has that expression when Arkana puts him out of play and attacks Yugi's life points.
• Heroic Sacrifice: Even though it was an unexpected special effect from Arkana's Ectoplasmer card draining the soul of his own Dark Magician, Yugi's Dark Magician looked very willing to have his soul take the hit and protect Yugi.
• Nothing Personal: Arkana says that to Yugi in that the reason he’s dueling for Marik is to win back the love of his former fiancé Catherine.
