Cyclops and Jean go out on a date, only to see a young mutant boy being chased by a mob. Attempting to rescue him, they flee into the subway system and get captured by the Morlocks. A group of homeless mutants living underground, they are led by a woman named Callisto who plans on taking Cyclops as her mate.

Jean manages to get a message to Professor Xavier, and he assembles the X-men to rescue her. Storm, while designated as the group's leader, struggles during the mission due to her claustrophobia.

In the end, Storm challenges Callisto to a hand-to-hand fight and gains leadership of the Morlocks, freeing Jean and Scott.

"Captive Hearts" provides examples of

  • Adaptation Deviation: In the comics, Callisto wanted Angel as her mate. Here, it's Cyclops, since Angel hasn't appeared in the series yet.
  • Adaptational Superpower Change:
    • Leech is depicted as possessing telekinetic powers besides those of his comic books counterpart.
    • Annalee's powers are more hypnotic here than those of her comic books counterpart.
  • And Now You Must Marry Me: Callisto takes Scott prisoner with the intention of forcing him to be her mate and providing her with an heir.
  • Beneath the Earth: The Morlocks are an underground community of homeless mutants, many of which can't pass off as regular humans due to their physical mutations.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Leech suppresses Scott's powers so he can't just rescue himself.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Wolverine's unrequited feelings for Jean cause him to act this way towards Cyclops. Exploited by Annalee to turn Wolverine against Cyclops for a moment.
  • Love Triangle: Two that overlap: Wolverine's feelings for Jean are key to the story, and Callisto takes an interest in Cyclops, but it's Cyclops and Jean that are together.
  • Mind over Matter: Leech is capable of using telekinesis as well as draining other mutants' powers.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: He doesn't go through with it, but when Wolverine discovers the real Cyclops, he muses he "could make a couple women real sad right now."
  • Stab the Picture: Wolverine stabs Cyclops in a picture of him and Jean. (Yes, that picture.) At the end of the episode, the picture is seen in Wolverine's room, and in addition to being stabbed it's been ripped in half between the two.
  • Stalker with a Test Tube: Callisto abducts Cyclops so he can, ah, give her an heir.
  • Trial by Combat: Callisto and Storm battle for leadership of the Morlocks this way.
