Recap / Total Drama: "Sweden Sour"

Go To

Gwen's recent elimination has left Courtney and Sierra delighted, while it has left Cody heartbroken. The next challenge takes place in freezing Sweden, where contestants must assemble a seaworthy vessel (not that they know this at the time) from a pile of wood. Alejandro and Duncan each try to win favour with Owen, hoping to use his vote to eliminate the other.

Tropes:

  • A Crack in the Ice: Owen causes one on the lake with his massive built-up fart, which actually benefits both teams in getting on the water (mostly Owen's own team).
  • Battle Cry: Owen does one as he approaches Team Amazon's ship.
  • Big "YES!": Courtney when Chris declares this was all a rewards challenge, thus saving her from elimination.
  • Blatant Lies: In the confessional, Alejandro accidental reveals that he has feelings for Heather, but tries claiming that his plan to make her jealous is to make her easier to eliminate.
  • Bland-Name Product: Sierra being a member of the Third Life site.
  • The Cameo: Ezekiel makes yet another silhouette one when Alejandro and Heather are arguing in the cargo hold.
  • Continuity Nod: Heather mentions that Chris ordered coats for the cast back in "Anything Yukon Do I Can Do Better", which still haven't arrived yet.
  • Edible Ammunition: Chef's Swedish Meatballs.
  • Epic Fail: Owen tries to fire off a meatball at Team Amazon's ship, only for the meatball to destroy Team Chris' sail.
  • Equippable Ally: At the end of the challenge, Owen makes up for his poor performance by turning himself into a cannonball. He completely destroys Team Amazon's ship, winning the challenge for his team.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Sieraa is injured Taking the Bullet, Courtney is the first one to ask if she's okay.
  • Foreshadowing: Sierra claims in a confessional that her marriage with Cody will eventually happen. While not truly legally-binding, it kind of does in the very next challenge.
  • Going Down with the Ship: Owen is Team CIRRRRH's captain for the naval combat challenge. When it seems they're going to lose, he gives it a final shot by volunteering himself as cannonball to take down Team Amazon's ship. The carnage is impressive and as Chris approaches the bobbing contestants, he quips that "the captain always goes down with the ship" normally relates to the captain's own ship, but this is beautiful too.
  • "Good Luck" Gesture: During a confessional, Sierra mentions she's been married to Cody fourteen times in her head and twice on her online blog. As she crosses her fingers, she argues that her conviction will make it become real eventually.
  • Heroic BSoD: Cody does not take Gwen's elimination well.
  • Horny Vikings: Chris gives out horned viking helmets to the captains of each team.
  • Human Cannonball: When Team Chris is Really, Really, Really, Really Hot run out of ammo, Owen becomes this, sinking the opposing team's ship and wins victory for his team.
  • Miserable Massage: In the exclusive clip, the authentic Swedish massage Team CIRRRRH has won is revealed to be a painful experience. The masseur is a burly viking with rough hands who stands on top of Alejandro and comes close to breaking his spine what with the strength with which he pulls on the boy's arms. Alejandro questions that this is meant to be a reward, compares the masseur to the devil, and begs him to stop.
  • Off with His Head!: Courtney says this after Sierra suggests sawing the top of Gwen's hollow head replica (built by Cody) and use it a ship.
  • Oh, Crap!: Duncan when he realizes that Owen can't hold in a massive built-up fart anymore.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Alejandro gets noticeably frazzled at the prospect of Duncan successfully forming an alliance with Owen.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the type of sauce "sweet and sour".
  • Reaction Shot: Team Amazon is mere meters from victory. It is all snatched away when Owen plays cannonball and comes diving from the air for their boat. Just before impact, the scene freezes and the camera goes from one team member close-up to the next, all expressions locked in horror and incomprehension and underscored with a doom drum sound effect.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: Courtney stops trying to sabotage her team now that Gwen is gone, but no one trusts her and she nearly gets voted off despite having nothing to do with her team's loss this round.
  • Seesaw Catapult: Team Amazon lacks a source of fire to make direct use of their cannon and meaty cannonballs, so Sierra rips a plank loose from their ship and places it over the cannon. Courtney and Heather catch on without instruction and as soon as Sierra places a meatball on one end, they jump on the other end to launch the projectile to Team CIRRRRH's ship. They miss.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The "I-build-a Mystery Assembly" portion of the challenge is a reference to IKEA.
    • One of Sierra's blogs is called "I Dream of Cody".
    • "We Built Gwen's Face" pays homage to "Dancing Queen" by ABBA.
    • The contestants' attire during "We Built Gwen's Face" is a reference to the Mamma Mia!, while Owen's bare-open jacket and gold medal is similar to the appearance of Barry Gibb on the cover of the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever.
    • Courtney shouts "Off with her head!".
  • Sweetie Graffiti: Duncan doesn't have any spray paint, but he uses his pocketknife to carve Gwen's face into the side of his seat while relaxing in first class at the end of the episode.
  • Talk Like a Pirate: Owen is made captain and given a viking hat to symbolize it during the naval warfare portion of the challenge. Hyped up by the status, Owen orders his team to talk like vikings, which he kickstarts by talking like a pirate. Duncan and Alejandro don't bother to correct him and put on the same accent. It's only when they're close to losing that Alejandro tells Duncan to stop talking like a pirate and that's when Owen realizes his mix-up.
  • Taking the Bullet: The final challenge is formed by ship-to-ship combat with stale meatballs as cannonballs. Team CIRRRRH blasts their last one towards Team Amazon's ship while its crew is distracted by in-fighting. The only one still paying attention is Sierra and as soon as she realizes the meatball is going to hit her beloved Cody, she jumps in front of him to take the hit to her stomach. He thanks her for it, which she considers worth the potential surgery and physiotherapy.
  • Troll: Chris not-so-accidentally shoved the instructions for building the ship into a shredder before making the teams build said ships.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Heather is not happy that Cody used their teams' materials to build Gwen's face and angrily chases him with a large mallet. Unfortunately for her, Sierra won't let her touch him.
  • Worth It: Sierra's attitude after getting a thanks from Cody.
