Recap / Total Drama: "Niagara Brawls"

Go To

Blaineley is introduced as the newest contestant, just before the teams merge. Now it's every camper for themselves... until Chris pairs the campers off for their Niagara Falls challenge. Forced to simulate marriage, some couples get along better than others. Despite their hatred for each other, Courtney and Duncan win invincibility, and Owen is voted out.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Marriage: Cody accidentally gets married to Sierra.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Chris said that one contestant from the aftermath would be returning, however it turned out that a newcomer would enter the fray, and just in time for the merge, and that newcomer was Blaineley, much to Cody's and Duncan's dismay, as they had such high hopes for Gwen's return to the competition.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Chris puts one in the husband slot machine, which attacks the boys and is given to Courtney when it's her turn.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Right before she pulls the lever on the husband slot machine, Courtney prays that she won't get Duncan. She gets a big angry bear, who roars and immediately starts chasing her around the stage.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Once again, Heather and Alejandro have this during the whole episode, while also calling each other "Ms. Alejandro" and "Mr. Heather" in ironic tones.
  • Berserk Button: Cody presses Blaineley's by not recognizing her and asking who she is.
  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • Blaineley during the song "Blainerific" when Cody asks who she is again, interrupting the song for a while.
    • Courtney does one after getting Duncan from the slot machine.
    • Heather in response to two people trying to vote her off.
  • Big "YES!": Heather and Courtney over the merge and thus no longer having to cooperate.
  • Bridal Carry: For the second part of the challenge, each groom has to carry his bride over Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Owen and Alejandro do it properly, Sierra carries Cody instead, and Duncan just opts for throwing Courtney over his shoulder.
  • Break the Cutie: Blaineley doesn't take Owen's elimination quite well. Averted in the fact that she's actually faking it, implying that she doesn't like him anyway.
  • Bridezilla: Chris calls Sierra one, and he's completely justified in doing so.
  • The Cameo: Ezekiel gets one in the beginning of the episode, stealing some cheese from a mouse.
  • Crocodile Tears: When it seems no one will really miss Owen when he's made to leave the plane, Blaineley begins sobbing and claims she'll miss him most of all. This makes Owen feel better until a few seconds in Blaineley looks up cheerily and asks if she was convincing and if it'll help her popularity with the audience.
  • Crying Wolf: Courtney doesn't listen to Duncan's instructions after he gets her to fall into a mud pool. The ones after the mud pool were actual instructions.
  • The Determinator: During the wedding dress challenge, despite being blindfolded and Cody not giving her directions, Sierra runs across a pool filled with piranhas, over a confetti machine, and straight through a wedding cake to reach the dress. She really wants to marry Cody (even if he's having none of it).
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Whenever Owen calls Alejandro "Al", he twitches.
  • Graceful Loser: Though disappointed over being eliminated, Owen doesn't take it personally and says he'll miss the others.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Alejandro yells "Por favor! I'm stuck!" after Sierra slams his arm in the door of the slot machine.
  • Hand Gagging: Sierra is an ordained minister and intends to trick Cody into marrying her. After she says her vow, she tries to get him to say "I do," regardless of context. At the customs booth, Sierra slaps a hand over Cody's mouth to stop him from answering Chef's questions and buy herself time to get Chef to ask one to which the answer could be "I do." Chef sends the both of them back for Sierra's craziness.
  • Hyperventilation Bag: Sierra uses a hyperventilation bag to calm down from the news that the next challenge will be wedding-themed and that there's a chance she'll get Cody as her partner. Then she faints anyway.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: The contestants almost go over Niagara Falls when they fail to pedal hard enough in their Swan Boats.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: During Owen's elimination, Blaineley is the only one who expresses sorrow for Owen before he leaves ... only for her to then ask Alejandro if it made her look sympathetic enough for the audience.
  • Kidnapped While Sleeping: Chris has all the sleeping contestants and two paddle boats dragged over to the trapdoor of the Total Drama Jumbo Jet. With everything in place, he opens the trapdoor. The contestants awaken mid-fall and grab onto the paddle boats for a somewhat safe landing in the Niagara River.
  • Kiss of Life: All of the contestants are at risk of going over the Niagara Falls until Cody promises that if he lives, he'll kiss Sierra. Sierra wants that kiss and in a moment of raw determination saves everyone. They are all exhausted when they hit the bank, though, and Sierra forcefully combines her promised kiss with the excuse of giving Cody CPR, even though he's fine and well enough to say so. Afterwards, he tries to scrub the taste of her off his tongue, but ends up vomiting anyway.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Ahead of the second challenge, a worried Blaineley says they have to have stunt doubles at some point. Owen sincerely remarks that's cute of her to think so.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Alejandro roughly kicks Owen to get him to take the Drop of Shame, he gets a load of farts to the face.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Owen has a dream sequence where he is naked.
  • Nice Guy: According to Blaineley, Owen is the most popular one on the show because of this. When trying to cut a deal with Duncan, Alejandro cites this as the reason he's a threat.
  • Now That's Using Your Teeth!: At the prospect of getting a kiss from Cody, Sierra becomes hellbent on saving everyone from going over the Niagara Falls. She ties a rope around Owen, throws him over to the other paddle boat as grapnel, holds the rope between her teeth, and starts paddling the boat she's in forward with superhuman speed.
  • Oh, Crap!: Duncan's reaction to being paired with Courtney is to panic and try to climb back into the slot machine.
  • Over-the-Shoulder Carry: The final challenge requires male contestants to carry female contestants over a tightrope across the Niagara Falls as groom and bride. Although a Bridal Carry would be conventional, two teams opt for the over-the-shoulder carry. Firstly, Sierra goes against the assigned gender roles by carrying Cody. She carries him over her shoulder for mobility and switches to a bridal carry when they reach Chef's customs booth. Duncan and Courtney stick with the gender roles, but because outside of the challenge they're bitter exes, Duncan refuses Courtney any dignity and carries her over his shoulder.
  • Palette Swap: Courtney's wedding gown is a recolor of her princess dress from the Action episode "Princess Pride".
  • Playing Both Sides: When discussing how he deliberately fell to appear weak to the others, Alejandro says he doesn't need to win immunity this time because he has three separate alliances in place that work just as well.
  • Potty Emergency: Cody has one of these at the end. According to him, he's been holding it in since they were at Niagara Falls.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: With Sierra freaking out over getting Alejandro instead of Cody, Heather offers to take the guy off her hands just so they can proceed with the rest of the day's work (although Courtney and Blaineley suspect she has a more personal interest in doing so).
  • Prayer Is a Last Resort: The contestants are about to go over the Niagara Falls in their paddle boats and there's nothing they can do against the strong current. Courtney is the first to resort to praying, promising one entity or another that she'll tutor anyone who asks, even a numbskull like Duncan, if she and the others survive. Duncan adds that if they get to live, he'll forget what Courtney just said. Cody one-ups the both of them by promising he'll let Sierra kiss him if they live, but admits he only makes the promise because they won't survive anyway. Sierra has other ideas and, with a kiss in mind, pulls off superhuman feats to save everyone.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the location the episode takes place at, Niagara Falls.
  • Rattling Off Legal: Sierra is an ordained minister and intends to trick Cody into marrying her. All she has to do is say the vow and all he has to do is say "I do," so she rattles off "DoyouCodytakemeSierratobeyourlawfullyweddedwife?" and then spends the rest of the day trying to get him to say his part, even if in a totally different context.
  • Real Fake Wedding: The contestants have to fake-marry for the Niagara Falls challenge, and Cody gets stuck with Sierra. In the confessional, she explains that she's an ordained minister on the Internet, and attempts to say the wedding vows really fast and trick Cody into saying "I do." She eventually succeeds, but it's Subverted in the next episode when Heather notes that that's not actually legal.
  • Sexy Figure Gesture: During Blaineley's song "Blainerific", Owen, who has a small crush on her, joins in and draws the shape of her body in the air.
  • Shaking the Rump: Blaineley turns her back to the camera for a little lower shake at the start of her "I Am Great!" Song "Blainerific". Her motivation is three-fold: she's sexy and she knows it, she arrogantly establishes herself to the veteran contestants, and she celebrates joining Total Drama for a shot at the grand prize.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Skewed Priorities: Duncan messes with Courtney during the first challenge. He admits he should be focused on winning and getting immunity, but this is just too much fun.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Duncan and Courtney when paired as husband and wife for the game.
  • That Was Not a Dream: Owen dreams of falling from the sky (in the dream it's because of Alejandro), only to wake up and find out that he really is falling from the sky, along with everyone else.
  • This Cannot Be!:
    • Sierra's reaction to getting Alejandro from the slot machine instead of Cody.
    • Cody over a blindfolded Sierra finding a wedding dress, despite him explicitly not giving her any instructions.
  • Threatening Shark: Several are below Niagara Falls waiting for the contestants. They are on a boat, wielding harpoons, rather than in the water ready to bite the contestants.
  • Troll Upon declaring Duncan and Courtney the winners, Chris says they both get invincibility. He had said this would be the case ahead of the final challenge, but he is only too happy to remind the bickering couple that they can't vote each other off.
  • Twitchy Eye: Alejandro over Owen repeatedly calling him "Al" before taking the Drop of Shame.
  • Unconventional Wedding Dress: The girls have to wear wedding dresses as part of the challenge. Most of them wear conventional wedding dresses, but Sierra's gown consists of a midriff-exposing top and a knee-length skirt.
  • Undesirable Prize: Duncan and Courtney win the challenge and get to stay in first class together until the next one. Normally this would be enjoyable, except that they just broke up on very bad terms because Duncan cheated on her with Gwen a few episodes ago. Oh, and they both won invincibility, so they can't vote for each other.
  • Victoria's Secret Compartment: After Sierra drools all over the slot machine lever, Blaineley, who is up next, takes a cloth out of her cleavage and drapes it over the lever so as not to touch it directly.
  • Working with the Ex: Duncan and Courtney are paired together for the challenge, but once they win, they still hate each other.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Alejandro deliberately falls off the rope. In the confessional, he remarks he could've won handily, but he wants to appear weaker than he is now that the teams have been dissolved.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: When Chris explains an aftermath contestant will be joining up, Cody immediately thinks of Gwen, and Duncan agrees. Chris uses descriptions that could apply to Gwen (such as it being a girl who wears lots of mascara) before introducing them to Blaineley.
  • You Need a Breath Mint: When they finish the wedding challenge, Courtney and Duncan can't help but insult each other when Chef asks if they have anything to declare.
Courtney: Uh, yes! I declare my husband to be an insensitive jerk who thinks his piercings make him cool, when really, they just divert attention away from his lack of personality.
Duncan: And I declare wifey here to be a stuck-up windbag. I also declare she could use some mouthwash!!
