Episode - Season 6, Episode 1 (Production Code: 601)

First Aired: January 31, 2016

The Ventures move on up after J.J. leaves them the wealthy and rebuilt Venture empire, while the Council of 13 picks up from the Sovereign's betrayal.

Tropes:

  • Amazon Chaser: Brock toward Warrianna, who confirms it while tied up by her Truth Lasso.
  • Artistic License – Gun Safety: Hatred scratches his head with the barrel of a loaded pistol at the end when handed the Guild documentation.
  • Badass Normal: Brock, per usual, but takes it up to eleven here as he takes on three members of the CAL (at least two of whom are legitimately super powered) and more than holds his own.
  • Bad Boss: The first thing Rusty does when he arrives at his new headquarters is immediately fire all the employees.
  • Captain Ersatz: This episode is filled with them.
  • Call-Back: The Captain gets addicted to tranquilizers again, having previously gotten addicted in The Lepidopterists.
  • Car Cushion: Happens to Warrianna after she gets caught on a zipline.
  • Cool Versus Awesome: Most people/things Brock fights qualify as "cool" but seeing a One-Man Army Badass Normal taking on Captain Ersatz versions of Captain America, Wonder Woman, and Hawkeye (and more than holding his own) is even more awesome than usual.
  • El Cid Ploy: The Council of 13 (what's left of it, anyway) attempts to convince the Guild that the Sovereign is still alive when it's just Phantom Limb on a hidden balcony. However, it falls apart pretty quickly.
  • Fat Bastard: Wide Wale appears to be Monstroso if he were aquatic-themed and a mafioso instead of a lawyer.
  • Hypocritical Humor: During the first meeting of (half) the new Council of 13, Radical Left claims he only counts as one person. After suggesting a meeting with the Guild, his left side proceeds to second the notion.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Sgt. Hatred previously reassigned Gathers and Brock to no nothing assignments after the Fantamos incident while secretly being in the Guild. Here, while on the side of the good guys, he's taken off the assignment he stuck Brock on, by the very same guy he sent to Guam.
  • Pistol Whip: Hatred delivers one to Gary, "owing him one" for the events of The Devil's Grip.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The CAL attack Brock (and JBot when it joins the fray) over what they assume are gunshots fired at the Ventech building, when they were really Hank using a grappling hook gun to try to save a drowning(?) girl.
  • Shout-Out
    • The "Rusty's back in power" song played in the beginning of the episode as the Ventures travel to New York is basically a thinly veiled parody of Snap!'s early '90s eurodance hit "The Power".
    • Rusty sarcastically refers to the CAL as "The cast from Godspell" when they first meet.
    • During the new Council of 13's first meeting, Dragoon tries to summon Dr. Killinger by shouting his name three times in a row, which is instantly followed by Red Mantle angrily pointing out that "he's not Beetlejuice".
    • Brown Widows' jock teacher colleague mockingly refers to him as "Mark Knopfler" after he throws a can at him.
    • After their move to the new Venture headquarters Hank starts dressing in similar clothes to pop star Justin Bieber, much to Brock's annoyance, who suggests dressing like Steve McQueen instead.
    • While trapped in an elevator with the manic, tranquilizer dart-high Pirate Captain, 21 refers to the situation as being "like in that movie, Devil!"
  • Shown Their Work: Warrianna only having one breast may seem like another odd physical quirk like so many others have in the Venture-verse, but it actually comes from an ancient Greek misconception/mistranslation that the mythological Amazons were missing a breast. It's a very obscure detail but given how often the show draws on Classical Mythology, it's not really surprising that they included it.
  • Sleek High Rise Apartment: Rusty inherits JJ's estate and quickly moves into a penthouse atop a high-rise in the center of New York City.
  • Truth Serums: Warrianna's Truth Lasso has this effect (as does Wonder Woman's golden lasso).
  • Vigilante Man: Sgt. Hatred seems to be this now that Brock is back, attempting to attack any villains that go after Dr. Venture.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: JBot is introduced in this episode as the cool, upgraded version of HELPeR... only for him to get pushed off the balcony of the Venture penthouse by HELPeR during The Stinger while nobody else is looking.
