Recap / The Nanny S 3 E 5 Vals Apartment

Go To

Feeling that her nanny duties are taking up too much of her free time, Fran moves into an apartment with Val.

  • Actor Allusion: Val's landlord is played by David Lander, essentially reprising his role as Squiggy.
  • Basement-Dweller: Prior to and after this episode, Val lives with her parents. It's mentioned that her allowance is her only income.
  • Creepy Cockroach: Val's apartment has a roach infestation.
  • Gay Bar Reveal: Variation. Val sells Fran on the apartment, in part, by mentioning that the place is "just crawling with single guys." Val stupidly failed to notice something about said guys.
Fran: The place is just crawling with single men, Val? Perhaps somebody should have thought twice before renting an apartment across the street from the Judy Holliday Inn!
  • Grade Skipper: When Niles learns Val's age, Fran tries to prevent him from using this to figure out hers by claiming she skipped a few grades. When that doesn't work, Fran says Val was Held Back in School. That Niles could believe.
  • Inadvertent Entrance Cue:
Fran: I'm never going to meet a rich, eligible bachelor around this place.
    Maxwell: [passing through] Hello.
    • Another one happens involving Val's apartment:
Fran: I can't wait to meet the moron talked you into leasing this place.
    Landlord: Hello!
  • Literal-Minded: After seeing a cockroach, Fran says "Val, take off your shoe and kill it!". So, Val takes her shoe off... and stomps the cockroach with her bare foot.
Fran: Oh, my god, I just moved in with Forrest Gump!
  • Malaproper: Squiggy, um... the landlord does this a couple times:
Landlord: Welcome, ladies, to my humble commode.
    Fran: You got that right.
    • And:
    Landlord: I must bid you a doo-doo.
  • Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?: Fran is preparing for a date with a podiatrist:
Fran: "Is that a bunion poking through your shoe, or are you just happy to see me?" Maybe I shouldn't open with that.
  • Shout-Out: The entirety of the titular apartment is one big reference to Laverne & Shirley complete with a familiar landlord, and Fran and Val attempting to do the famous rhyme that started the intro.
  • Wakeup Makeup: Lampshaded
Niles: You sleep in your makeup?
Fran: Honey, do you see a ring on this finger? What if there was a fire? Do I need some gorgeous fireman climbing over me to save the sixteen-year-old heiress?
