Recap / The Muppet Show S 4 E 1

Go To

John Denver invites the Muppets on a weekend camping trip to Kermit's birthplace: the swamp.

Segments and songs:

  • Song: "Why Can't We Be Friends?" - Wartime Muppets and Crazy Harry
  • Backstage
  • Song: "The Garden Song" - John Denver with a group of Muppet Plants
  • Backstage with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Annie Sue Pig
  • The Swedish Chef: Squirrel Stew
  • Backstage with John Denver and Gonzo
  • Song: "Trees" - Miss Piggy
  • Song: "The Happy Wanderer" - The Three Hiking Pigs
  • Guest Star's Dressing Room: John Denver and Miss Piggy
  • Backstage with Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy
  • Song: "Grandma's Feather Bed" - John Denver and a bed full of Muppet kids and dogs

This episode provides the examples of:

  • The Dog Bites Back: "Squirrel Stew": The squirrels spend the sketch fighting the Swedish Chef every step of the way, by refusing to get down from the tree and later swarming him to fight him off (one is implied to have bit him).
  • Exit, Pursued by a Bear: A more literal example: Swedish Chef's sketch ends with him being chased away by a bear who has stolen his meat cleaver.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: John sings "Nobody Knows the Truffles I've Seen" in the presence of sentient mushrooms, and they attack him for it.
  • Rearrange the Song: The opening has been shortened, it's sung by both men and women at the same time, and the verse goes:
It's time to play the music
It's time to light the light
It's time to get things started
  • Re-Cut: "Trees" was shown in Europe only. It was never shown in North America until the episode was reran on The Disney Channel.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: In "Grandma's Feather Bed", John Denver plays both himself and his grandma, who enters to tell him and the Muppets to hold it down so she can sleep.
  • White Flag: At the end of the "Why Can't We Be Friends?" number, Statler and Waldorf open fire at the singers, who are dressed as historical soldiers. They all duck under the scenery, and then re-emerge waving white flags.

Kermit: Well, guys. It's just the three of us for a weekend at the swamp.
[Beat]
Statler and Waldorf: Oh, no!

John Denver and the Mushrooms

John Denver changes the words to "Nobody Knows The Troubles I've Seen" when singing surrounded by a bunch of mushrooms. The mushrooms don't like the new lyrics...

How well does it match the trope?
