Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S2 E2 "You've Got Hate Mail"

Go To

The second episode of the second season of The Looney Tunes Show.

Daffy learns that you can vent your anger towards others through hate mail from Tina. When he finishes writing hate mail of everyone he knows (except Porky), he accidentally sends it to them. Meanwhile, Lola wants Bugs to be in the next family photo, but when Bugs gets a chipped tooth trying to read Daffy's hate mail to him, Lola suddenly wants him out. Which just makes Bugs want to be in the photo more out of spite.

"You've Got Hate Mail" contains examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Lola's attempts at keeping Bugs out of the family photo because of his chipped tooth end up being for nothing, as not only does Bugs make it in, but Lola and her parents also wind up with chipped teeth. Walter and Patricia aren't bothered by this, but Lola is not happy.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Porky is insulted when Daffy reveals that he didn't send hate mail because he didn't consider Porky worthy of hate. He only agrees to help delete Tina's email if Daffy sends him a hate message.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Daffy's letter to Tina goes on describing her as unhinged psychopath and a depraved individual, and ends by stating that's the only possible explanation as to why someone as kind, smart, and beautiful as her would ever want anything to do with a guy like Daffy.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: When Witch Lezah reads over the email Daffy accidentally sends to everyone he knows (except Porky), she covers Gossamer's eyes so he can't read it.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: The clothes and props have outlines, unlike the rest of season 2, given that this is the first season 2 episode produced.
  • First-Name Basis: Lola's father gives Bugs permission to use his first name, Walter.
  • Hidden Depths: While changing back into his normal self at the end of the episode, Sam unloads a long rant about how awful a book's protagonist is, complaining about how there's no arc to the character and there was no emotional journey.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: In the prologue, Daffy is outraged that the baker he and Bugs visit doesn't give out free samples, asking how he can decide if he likes it or not if he isn't allowed to try it. He asks if he would shove his hand in it or rub his face in it to ruin it for everyone else as he does just that to the lemon meringue pie that Bugs buys for Lola and her parents.
  • Imaginary Friend: In this episode, Patricia reveals that Lola had an imaginary friend named Piper when she was a kid. In reality, Lola still talks to Piper. She even does it in this episode's end tag.
  • Imagine Spot: Daffy has one about Tina's reaction to reading the email. It consists of Tina reading it, then making an incredibly over-the-top angry expression as flames randomly appear in the background.
    Daffy: Mother.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Daffy thinks Tina is a "psychopath" for putting up with him.
  • Irony: When Daffy accidentally sends out an email detailing everything he dislikes about everyone he knows, the person with the most angry response is kindly old lady Granny, who flattens Daffy in one punch. The person with the most docile response is the Hot-Blooded Yosemite Sam, who believes that everything Daffy wrote about him was harsh, but valid, and tries to change his ways in response to reading it.
  • Irrevocable Message: Daffy accidentally sends a hate-filled email to everyone he knows (except Porky). He then attempts to delete the email from Tina's computer before she can read it.
  • Jerkass Ball: Lola grabs it in this episode by trying to keep her boyfriend out of the family photo over his chipped tooth.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Yosemite Sam. He doesn't get angry at Daffy for his hate email, and instead thanks him for it, using it as an opportunity to become a better person. Unfortunately, it doesn't last.
  • Karmic Twist Ending: Lola wants the family photo to be perfect, so she excludes Bugs after he chips his tooth. His antics to get back into the photo cause everyone in her family to get a chipped tooth just in time for the photo. Everyone is happy, except for Lola.
  • Marty Stu: In-Universe; Alex, the protagonist of the book that is discussed in the book club where Yosemite Sam is part of, seems to be this. Sam is very critical of him, criticizing the lack of obstacles to overcome and the absence of a character arc, and that's what leads him to return to his old appearance and attitude.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: When Daffy tries to delete the email he sent to Tina from her computer, he reads an email from someone named Michael that says "Dear Tina, I can't wait to see you again. I miss you and love you." Daffy believes Tina to be cheating on him, and when he asks her who Michael is, she tells him that Michael is her brother.
  • Modesty Towel: When Lola comes to Bugs' house to tell him about the jumpsuits she made for the family photo, Bugs comes out of the shower wearing a towel around his waist despite the fact that he doesn't normally wear clothes.
  • Morality Pet: Daffy can say bad things about everyone else, but it turns out he can't say a bad thing about Tina (besides calling her a psychopath, and that's because he can't understand why she puts up with him).
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Lola has been urging Bugs to get ready for the family photo. When she gives him an out, he's suspicious and insulted on learning it's because of his chipped tooth. Bugs then schemes to get into the photo out of spite.
  • Status Quo Is God: Sam tries to become a better person after reading Daffy's email. Unfortunately, by the end of the episode, he returns to his old appearance and attitude.
  • The Tooth Hurts: Bugs gets a chipped tooth. There isn't time to fix it before the shoot, and the same fate befalls Lola and her family.
