Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S2 E26 "Super Rabbit"

Go To

The twenty-sixth and final episode of the second season of The Looney Tunes Show, as well as the Series Finale.

When Daffy finds a carrot-shaped, diamond-like object among Bugs' things, Bugs tells him his past: His true name is Kal-El AKA Super Rabbit, and comes from the planet Crypton ("Crypton with a C, not a K"). He narrates to Daffy how he stopped his superhero career after fighting General Zod (portrayed by Daffy).

This episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change: "Krypton" is spelled with a C instead of a K, thus "Crypton".
  • Armor-Piercing Question: While talking to his father's holographic projection, Super Rabbit is asked if he ever thought the reason there were many supervillains in Metropolis was because of him.
  • Art Shift: During Bugs' story, the art style and animation change and become more reminiscent of Superman: The Animated Series.
  • Bald of Evil: The bald supervillain Lex Luthor is portrayed here by the bald Looney Tunes antagonist Elmer Fudd.
  • Batman Parody: The episode ends with a parody of Batman's Death by Origin Story. Daffy and Tina leave a movie theater playing The Mark of Zorro (1940), with the two of them wearing the same kind of clothes Thomas and Martha Wayne are usually wearing in most continuities (and Tina even having a pearl necklace). Daffy suggests they go home by "going down this dark and desolated alley". They come across a mugger who steals Tina's necklace. In a twist, he's stopped by what appears to be Batman, who is then revealed to be Bugs as "Bat-Rabbit", the latter even saying "I'm Bat-Rabbit." in a gravelly voice similar to Christian Bale's Batman voice.
  • Big Word Shout: Played for laughs when a defeated Super Rabbit gets back to the fortress.
    Super Rabbit: FATHER!
Jor-El: [appearing] I'm here, Son. Why are you shouting?
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: At the end of the episode, after saving Daffy and Tina (and being rudely dismissed by Daffy), Bat-Rabbit turns to the camera and utters the classic line "Ain't I a stinker?".
  • Call-Back:
    • Daffy remembers how Bugs already tricked him into believing he comes from Krypton in the first episode.
    • At the end of the epidode, Bugs saves Tina and Daffy from a mugger as "Bat-Rabbit". The end of "Reunion" has already established Bugs as a Batman-like figure in this continuity.
  • Clark Kenting: Super Rabbit pretends to be a reporter named Clark Kent and even wears Clark's reporter outfit while trying to get closer to Zod. Naturally, Zod and his crew don't realize it's Super Rabbit until after the latter removes his reporter outfit.
  • Comes Great Responsibility: Rather than a symbol of hope, Super Rabbit acts boastful and arrogant, all while failing to take stock that villains only attack Metropolis to pick a fight with him. After losing to Zod's crew, Super Rabbit is called out by his father on his behavior and takes stock of things. Once Zod is defeated, Super Rabbit gives up his powers on the grounds that he didn't have the humility to properly use them. Incidentally, that's what convinces Daffy that the whole story was a lie, as he just can't believe anyone would give up such power.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • When Bugs tells Daffy that he made a mistake by throwing Lex Luthor's suit to space, Daffy asks if it was because the suit was rented.
    • After Bugs tells Daffy Zod's backstory, Daffy claims that Zod is an attractive and intelligent person with ambitions. When Bugs tries to correct him, he merely tells him he agrees to disagree.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Super Rabbit rips a suit of powered armour off Lex Luthor to reveal that Lex is wearing boxers with the Superman symbol on them.
  • Guile Hero: Jor-El points out that Super Rabbit can't beat three super-powered beings in a standard fight and advises uses wits to outsmart his opponents. Super Rabbit ends up playing to Faora and Thumpinator's grievances so that he can face Zod one-on-one. He continues using tactics and trickery against Zod rather than relying on brute force.
  • Interspecies Romance: Zod and Faora. He's a duck and she's human... er, Cryptonian.
  • Kangaroo Court: The tribunal sitting in judgement on Zod, Faora, and Thumpinator pronounce them guilty before Jor-El has finished his opening statement. Jor-El, who is prosecuting, expresses his exasperation that they keep doing this.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Zod's main motivation is to get Super Rabbit and everybody on Earth to kneel before him.
  • A Lesson in Defeat: Jor-El feels that Super Rabbit deserved to lose, due to his arrogance and showboating.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Much like in the 1943 classic short of the same name, Bugs becomes a parody of Superman who goes by the name of "Super Rabbit".
    • When Super Rabbit fights Brainiac (portrayed by Marvin the Martian), he briefly kisses him, as he did on several cartoons.
    • While fighting Super Rabbit, Lex Luthor (portrayed by Elmer Fudd) says "Be vewy vewy quiet. I'm hunting Supew-Wabbit. Hahahahaha!".
    • At the end of the episode, Bugs, as Bat-Rabbit, utters his classic line "Ain't I a stinker?".
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Super Rabbit balls up Lex Luthor's power suit and bats it into outer space. Lex points out that he has just sent an unstable nuclear power source into orbit. Sure enough, the suit explodes, freeing Zod and the others from the Phantom Zone.
  • No Mouth: This is briefly averted when Marvin (as Brainiac) is shown to have a mouth for once when Super Rabbit takes a picture of the two of them.
  • Powered Armor: As Luthor, Elmer uses the former's green and purple armor.
  • Shout-Out: The ending of the episode has Bat-Rabbit saving Tina and Daffy from a mugger, and is framed at first as if it were showing Batman's origin story before he shows up, similar to the opening of Tim Burton's first Batman film.
  • Superhero Episode: This episode focuses on Bugs doing superhero stuff as the titular Super Rabbit.
  • Superman Substitute: Bugs plays the role of a Superman parody known as "Super Rabbit".
  • That's All, Folks!: Bugs reuses his tag from the classic shorts by simply saying, "And dat's de end!"
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Zod right before his very large statue falls on him.
  • Too Dumb to Live: As part of the Batman Parody, Daffy suggests heading into "a dark and desolate alley" in order to save two measly seconds. He and Tina get mugged almost immediately.
  • Universal-Adaptor Cast: Various Looney Tunes characters are cast as various Superman characters. Those include Bugs as Superman (or rather Super Rabbit), Marvin the Martian as Brainiac, Elmer Fudd as Lex Luthor, and Daffy as General Zod.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jor-El calls out Super Rabbit for this; pointing out that most of his current problems he has brought on himself because of his arrogance.
  • Whole-Plot Reference:
    • The episode's premise is loosely inspired by the 1943 Looney Tunes short of the same name.
    • The episode is also a reference towards the Superman franchise, with several Looney Tunes characters getting to portray Superman villains.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Faora asks Zod why they have to make Kal-El kneel before them. Why not just dispose of him and take over the Earth?
  • Women Are Wiser: Faora consistently proves to be the cooler head, such as when advocating simply outright killing the only being capable of challenging them.
  • "You!" Exclamation: Zod to Super Rabbit ahead of their rematch.
