Gumball: Dude [Darwin], don't freak out. There's enough space in my life for the both of you.

Darwin is jealous of all the attention Gumball is giving to the newly-transformed Penny, so he tries to break them up, but Penny does the job for him when she tells Gumball that they need space due to Darwin's jealousy.

Tropes:

  • A Lady on Each Arm: Gumball to put his arm around Penny, then Darwin puts Gumball's other arm around himself, accidentally invoking this trope.
  • Big Brother Attraction: Darwin reaches Yandere levels of this in the first half of the episode. He thought Gumball was talking about having a very special evening with him when he means with Penny, tries to dig dirt on her just so she and Gumball can break up and leave Gumball all to himself, kisses Gumball after Penny just kissed him, attacks Penny in a basketball game despite them being on the same team, and he even wears a poorly-drawn costume of Penny just so Gumball can still love him. Even Gumball found the last part creepy and nauseating.
  • Black Comedy Burst: The heartwarming ending of Gumball and Darwin celebrating their bro wedding is juxtaposed with two shots of the burning toilet paper roses, followed by a shot of Penny's family standing outside their burning house as two firefighters put out the fire.
  • Bowdlerization: In Cartoon Network Asia, Darwin screaming "Back off, Penny Fitzgerald! He's my brother from another mother!" was shortened to "Back off, Penny Fitzgerald! He's my brother!"
  • Brick Joke: Darwin led Penny to the toolshed with a line of (toilet) paper roses. They're shown getting set on fire along with the toolshed, and the episodes ends following the trail of fire leading all the way back to the Fitzgerald house, which is burning as the family are standing outside.
  • The Bro Code: Penny's solution to Darwin's jealousy: have him and Gumball declare themselves Heterosexual Life-Partners with a wedding ceremony "In the name of the Bro Code."
  • Closest Thing We Got: Darwin makes an improvised (and insanely dangerous) version of Gumball's idea for proposing to Penny. Instead of being at a log cabin by a blue lake with fireflies, they meet in a tool shed next to a puddle of antifreeze surrounded by flies strapped to firecrackers. Darwin also substitutes a fan with red streamers for a fireplace and a pipe he pumped chocolate through with his mouth for a chocolate fountain.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Darwin goes into a jealous fit when finds out the "special something" Gumball was planning and asked about was with Penny, not him.
  • Foreshadowing: As Penny approaches Gumball's shed, she asks aloud if his parents are aware there is a puddle of antifreeze in the yard as she steps around it. She then comments that the liquid is "really flammable." A few moments later, this is proven true.
  • Friend Versus Lover: Darwin has a very one-sided rivalry over Gumball with Penny. Penny pretty quickly catches on and is incredibly understanding of him, even suggesting Gumball and her spend some time apart so they don't damage their friendship.
  • HA HA HA—No:
Penny: So, uh, Darwin, I hope you don't feel... threatened by me, do you?
(Darwin laughs insanely then suddenly stops)
    Darwin: No.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Darwin shouts "I am not making a scene!" at the top of his lungs before Gumball can even say anything about it, then complains that Penny is suffocating them while a bunch of Darwin appear and surround Gumball.
  • Made of Incendium: A trail of tissue-paper flowers, each feet apart, spreads a fire across multiple blocks and rapidly sets the Fitzgerald's house on fire.
  • Must Make Amends: Upon seeing how broken up Gumball gets at Penny asking for space, Darwin realizes how insane he'd been acting. So he tries to make up for it by giving Gumball his perfect chance to propose.
  • Nightmare Face: Darwin makes one moments before starting his attempts on finding dirt on Penny.
"BACK OFF, PENNY FITZGERALD, HE'S MY BROTHER FROM ANOTHER MOTHER!!!"
  • Not What It Looks Like: Darwin is caught hanging from the ceiling of the girl's locker room—he was there on purpose, but it was to find something bad about Penny, not for voyeuristic reasons. Darwin tries to use makeup to disguise himself as a girl, but this fails because he tries this while everyone is looking at him (among other reasons) so he throws a bottle of talcum powder to the ground and escapes in the cloud.
  • Outrun the Fireball: Penny, Darwin, and Gumball all jump out of the toolshed just before the propane tank outside blows it up.
  • Reading the Stage Directions Out Loud: Gumball reads out "Romantic deep male voice." from the cue cards he made to talk to Penny.
  • Reactive Continuous Scream: Penny tells Gumball they need some space because she feels bad for Darwin. Gumball does a very animesque Jaw Drop with Blank White Eyes and screams all the way home.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: In reverse; the jealous hot-tempered Darwin (Red) and the tolerable Gumball (Blue) become this in this episode.
  • Rejected Marriage Proposal: As in "The End", Gumball proposes to Penny, though at least they're actually dating this time. Just like last time, Penny points that they can't because they're both too young.
Gumball: Age doesn't matter when it comes to love!
    Penny: Legally, it kinda does.
  • Sequel Episode: This episodes picks up the plotline in "The Burden" of Darwin being jealous of Penny dating Gumball.
  • Shapeshifter Swan Song: As she's choking on Gumball's ring, Penny starts going through several forms shown in "The Shell" plus a new one like Medusa.
  • Spaghetti Kiss: Darwin butting in on Gumball and Penny's meal backfires as they end up sharing a plate. When they begin sucking up the same noodle, Darwin somehow gets between them and bites into the segment inbetween, holding onto it until he causes a three-way headbutt.
  • Squee: Gumball and Darwin squeal like teenage girls three times at the beginning of the episode when they discuss the best things to do for someone special. They even manage to shatter car windows with their squeals.
  • Stylistic Self-Parody: Gumball tries to do That Russian Squat Dance, but his torso is so short he kicks himself in the face.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial:
Darwin: I AM NOT MAKING A SCENE!!!
    Gumball: Okay...
Darwin: AND I AM NOT JEALOUS OF PENNY!!!
  • Unnecessary Roughness: During a basketball game, Darwin roughly knocks the ball out of Penny's hands several time, hitting her in the face with it once, and knocks her drink out of her hand, all of which is accompanied by Unsportsmanlike Gloating. They were on the same team.
  • The Unsmile: Gumball's attempt at a charming smirk results in a very slimy rictus. Luckily, Penny found it funny instead of creepy.
  • With This Ring: Gumball tries to give Penny a ring in a glass of soda, but she accidentally swallows it and starts choking on it.
