Gumball thinks that Mr. Robinson (their irritable neighbor modeled in the style of Jim Henson's Muppets) saved his life, and vows to save Mr. Robinson's life in return.

Tropes:

  • All Part of the Show: Anais and Darwin attempt to give Gumball something to save Mr. Robinson from, but everything they use (including trap doors, sand bags, and pyrotechnics that barely miss him) goes unnoticed by either of them and makes the show seem more impressive to the audience.
  • Beat Still, My Heart: Gumball's unnecessary attempt at a Heimlich maneuver on Mr. Robinson makes him spit up his own heart; he only survives because he narrowly manages to swallow it again.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Gumball rigs a Booby Trap on the Robinson house to protect it from intruders. It's activated by ringing the doorbell.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Mr. Robinson’s first one.
  • Diving Save: Double Subverted: we get a Slow "NO!" of Gumball trying to push Mr. Robinson out of the way of a falling stage light but Gumball's jump falls short and the light is stopped just above Mr. Robinson by its own power cord, but after he refuses to get out of the way Gumball successfully pushes him out from under the light which does fall.
  • Flung Clothing: Mr. Robinson kicks off his song and dance number by throwing off his suit to show he's wearing shorts, purple leg-warmers, a midriff-showing T-shirt, and sweatbands on his wrists. In response to this, his wife drives off, apparently leaving him without a ride home.
  • Furry Reminder: While Gumball is waiting for Mr. Robinson to come to his doorstep, he naps on his welcome mat like an actual cat.
  • Glass-Shattering Sound: Mr. Robinson finishes his musical number with an Incredibly Long Note that cracks the windows of the school, of his car as his wife is driving it, having long since left, and it brings down a stage light.
  • I Owe You My Life: Mr. Robinson "saves" Gumball (stops his slow-moving car when Gumball was too busy panicking to get out of its path) and Gumball decides he has to save Mr. Robinson in return, nearly killing him several times. Given Gumball had just shown to be a rather dedicated fan of Mr. Robinson, the whole thing is essentially an excuse to follow him around.
  • Kiss of Life: Mr. Robinson slips on a floor and Pantsbully attempts CPR on him despite him not even being unconscious.
  • My Life Flashed Before My Eyes: Gumball claims this is happening to him while a car is backing very slowly towards him.
Gumball: My life is flashing before my eyes... and it's boring!
  • Laser-Guided Karma: According to Mr. Robinson, Mrs. Robinson only agreed to come to the show to watch him fail, and even had the nerve to angrily leave during the middle of his amazing performance. However, when Mr. Robinson draws out the "me" part of his song, his voice is so loud that it cracks several pieces of glass, including the front window of Mrs. Robinson's car. This causes her to lose sight and control of her car, thus crashing into a street light while the air bag inflates on her.
  • Persona Non Grata: The fliers for the Elmore Senior Talent show have a section specifically saying Gumball is not allowed to be there. He goes anyway, and it's so empty that no one cares.
  • Slow "NO!": Gumball does one when he sees Mr. Robinson is about to get crushed.
  • Squashed Flat: Anais and Darwin come down from the scaffold above the stage, but the lift they took down slow crushes Mr. Robinson until he's only a few inches tall. Anais insists he's still OK after he makes noises.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Mr. Robinson is amazed Gumball actually saved his life, but quickly scolds him for ruining his performance to do it.
  • Unnecessary Combat Roll: Gumball roles around the talent show stage as he's trying to look out for Mr. Robinson's assassin.
