"You see boys, sometimes in life you really have to face the consequences of your actions. And sometimes you just- RUN!"

Gumball and Darwin accidentally destroy a late rental DVD, and do whatever they can to keep their mom, Nicole from finding out about it.

Tropes:

  • Angry Guard Dog: Darwin and Gumball run away from a cube dog, leaving their mom in their yard to deal with it by herself. She comes out riding it like a horse.
  • Bilingual Bonus: When Darwin is asked if he can speak Chinese, he says "I don't really know how to speak Chinese because it is really hard to speak, and I only know a little Chinese to speak, so I can't really say I speak it." in Chinese. However, this is subtitled as "No."
  • Digital Piracy Is Evil: Invoked with Darwin giving the whole "You wouldn't steal a car/purse/cell phone" speech.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • The first scene is two-fold for Gumball and Nicole: Gumball trying to get out of returning the DVD and Nicole punching a hole through the door out of frustration.
    • With Darwin, it's either his using the DVD as a pizza cutter or his repeated insistence that he and Gumball should "face the consequences of [their] actions and tell Mom".
  • Eye Scream: Gumball tries to get money by testing cosmetics and has an allergic reaction, wipes his face, and smears his eye across his face.
  • Glad I Thought of It: Darwin keeps telling Gumball he should "tell the truth and face the consequences of [their] actions" when they accidentally break the DVD, but Gumball keeps saying no. However, later in the episode, Gumball tells Darwin the same thing, and Darwin punches him in the arm.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Gumball finds Darwin using the DVD as a pizza cutter and as Gumball is cleaning the cheese off it, he tells Darwin that he needs to be more careful with DVDs, not realising he's scrubbing it with the abrasive side of the sponge.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: The homeless man tactlessly takes Gumball and Darwin's money, but considering they're begging on the street all to pay off a DVD fine, whilst he's legitimately homeless, he's not exactly unblameable.
  • Medium Awareness: When Gumball attempts to wipe some makeup off his face, he accidentally smears his left eye.
Gumball: Why am I looking at the floor?
  • Movie-Making Mess: Seen when Darwin and Gumball produce their own version of "Alligators on a Train" to try and fool Larry, the DVD store owner. It doesn't work, because not only are they bad actors, the "movie" only lasts about 5 seconds, they're filming it with one camera while fighting cardboard alligators, and only put their own names (plus "cardboard") in the credits. In their defense, though, Gumball and Darwin did know it was very unlikely to solve their problem beforehand.
Darwin: I TOLD you we should have put some other people's names in there!
Gumball: What, and let them have all the glory?
  • Punch a Wall: When Gumball keeps giving excuses as to why he shouldn't have to return the DVD himself, Nicole punches a hole in the front door and he quickly changes his mind.
  • Rags to Riches: The hairy hobo becomes a millionaire after using Gumball and Darwin's money to buy a scratch-off card. He still wouldn't pay them back anything.
  • Really 17 Years Old: Gumball and Darwin volunteer for cosmetic testing to make some money, and the cupcake woman who is the administrator is too apathetic to vet them properly about being adults.
Cupcake Lady: Are you boys 18?
Gumball: Uh, does it count if I've been both 8 and 10?
    Cupcake Lady: I suppose so.
  • Saw "Star Wars" Twenty-Seven Times: According to Nicole, Gumball has seen Alligators on a Train 72 times.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Nicole is fine with paying $20 to replace the missing DVD, but when faced with a $700 late fee, Nicole opts to just book it.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: Larry is able to send a series of telephone messages that come together as one message by knowing exactly when the person receiving it would skip to the next.
  • Test Subject for Hire: Gumball and Darwin sign up for various forms of medical and cosmetics testing to help pay off the late fees.
  • Translation: "Yes": Darwin is asked if he can speak Chinese for a job and says "I don't really know how to speak Chinese because it is really hard to speak and I only know a little Chinese to speak so I can't speak it." in Chinese, which is subtitled as "No."
