Gumball and Darwin get in a contest with Richard to find someone who's lazier than he is — and discover that Larry the rock-headed clerk used to be just as lazy as Richard, if not more.

Tropes:

  • Absurdly High-Stakes Game: If Gumball and Darwin win the contest, Richard will do their chores for one day. If Richard wins, they do his chores for the rest of their lives.
  • Batman Gambit: In a surprising show of intelligence for someone who's usually The Ditz, Richard pulls a skillful Batman Gambit on Gumball and Darwin at the end: when he hears Nicole coming in, he gives up the bet and starts doing the chores. He then pretends he's been doing them all day, so Nicole thinks Gumball and Darwin were the lazy ones and orders them to do all the chores while Richard relaxes for the rest of the day.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Gumball and Darwin ultimately win the competition, sparing them from doing Richard's chores for the rest of their lives. However, Richard emotionally manipulates Nicole into thinking that he is exhausted from doing his chores while the kids make fun of him — so she forces Gumball and Darwin to do his chores for the day anyways.
  • The Cat Came Back: Gumball and Darwin constantly reappear anytime Larry tries to get rid of them, even becoming the eggs in a cartoon and the back seat of his car, constantly asking him to "Please do it, Larry!".
  • Creator Cameo: The two thumb-wrestlers shown on TV are James Lamont (writer) and Richard Overall (editor).
  • Didn't Think This Through: Darwin and Gumball manage to make Larry lazy again—so much that he won't come over to their house and beat their dad at being lazy, which was the whole point.
  • Epic Fail: Richard is able to blow on a piece of paper, moving a series of items that launch a piece of pizza from the kitchen table to his mouth while still on the couch. When Gumball tries to imitate this, he blows a piece of paper off-screen, then a toaster comes crashing into Darwin and knocking him off the couch.
  • Given Name Reveal: Karen mentions Larry's full first name, Laurence.
  • Hypocritical Humor: At the beginning of the episode, Nicole wants Richard to do the house chores while she is out. Thanks to Richard’s emotional manipulation, she wants the boys to do them instead when she comes back.
  • Karma Houdini:
    • Gumball and Darwin destroy Larry's life, making him lose his job, cause him to break up with his girlfriend, and destroy his car all for the sake of winning their bet. It's not clear if it was entirely intentional on their part, but they take advantage of it nonetheless. However, they do suffer minor punishment for something they didn't do.
    • Richard tries to con his own children into doing his chores for life with an unfair bet and, even though he loses, he manages to manipulate Nicole into making them do his work anyway.
  • Noodle Incident: Three different characters almost flash back to the "Summer of '83" when Richard beat (Lazy) Larry for his title of the laziest person in Elmore, but all three times Gumball refuses to let them elaborate because he doesn't care (Well, the first time, he didn't get to hear it on account of his sugar rush abruptly ending)
  • Not Hyperbole: A subtle example is how Larry calls Richard "lazier than a rock". The way he says it makes it sound metaphorical, but since Larry himself is a rock who lost a laziness contest to Richard, it also literally true.
  • Organ Autonomy: The sugar rush Darwin and Gumball experience is accompanied by a musical number with singing sugar cubes tickling their hearts, then a second one with just their heart singing about coming down.
  • Snap Back: Larry is last seen in the episode fat, unemployed, and single, but is back to his usual self the next time we see him and at other times is shown to still be dating his girlfriend.
  • Suckiness Is Painful: Richard tries to get Gumball to leave the couch by putting on a shopping channel, which he finds physically painful.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: When Lawrence turns back into Lazy Larry, he suddenly balloons to become as big as his couch.
  • Undercrank: When Gumball and Darwin are experiencing a sugar rush, their voices are sped up.

The Laziest

Gumball and Darwin engage in a happy dance after winning the lazy-off, but their victory is short-lived when Nicole comes home and chews them out for fooling around while Richard does the chores.
