Michelangelo befriends some odd, new superheroes named Wingnut and Screwloose.

  • Aesop Amnesia: You'd think that after the experience with Mom Thing, that everyone would learn to take Mikey's claims more seriously. Not really. When Mikey tries to explain that the monster from his comic came to life by April's crystal, even showing them physical proof, no one believes him. Once again, Mikey's proven right, when he uses said crystal to bring Wingnut and Screwloose to life.
Raph: [sees monster Wingnut and Screwloose] Whoa! Mikey was right. We gotta start listening to him more often.
  • Artifact of Doom: The piece of the Soul Star given to April seems to be becoming this.
  • Art Initiates Life: Mikey brings Wingnut and Screwloose to life out of a comic book.
  • Breather Episode: Aside from April's erm...attitude, the episode is lighthearted with Mikey and Casey hanging out with comic heroes they brought to life and takes a break from the war against Shredder and mutant racists.
  • Continuity Nod: Now we know where Mikey got the idea to name Kirby's mutant form "Wingnut".
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: April's obsession with her crystal and anger over losing it bears similarities to drug addicts.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: April, due to her obsession with the crystal.
  • Evil Makes You Monstrous: Over exposure to the crystal causes Wingnut and Screwloose to become more monstrous. It's starting to do the same to April too...
  • Foreshadowing: April starts acting insanely possessive of the crystal, the same way Wingnut and Screwloose do...
  • Mythology Gag: Wingnut and Screwloose coming out of a comic book alludes to the fact that they originate from the Archie comic series. They start out as Batman and Robin pastiches before mutating into forms better resembling their Archie comics counterparts.
    • The Crystal bringing comicbook characters to life is reminiscent of Kirby's crystal from Donatello's micro-series.
  • Shout-Out: Several comics series are named by the turtles that share a resemblance to well known comic books from Marvel and DC. These titles include Wingnut and Screwloose, Arachnid-Man, Superb Man, The Indelible Bulge, and The Fantastic Four Food Groups.
    • More specifically, Wingnut and Screwloose are most heavily based on the 60s' Batman TV show, with Wingnut even having the distinctive eyebrows on his cowl, Screwloose having the catchphrase of "Holy [thing], Wingnut!", the trademark "Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na" music, and sound effects accompanying playing when they beat people up.
    • Mikey remarks that April is starting to act like the crystal is her "Precioussss".
  • True Art Is Angsty: In-universe, Leo makes fun of Raph's favorite comic book,The Fantastic Four Food Groups for not being dark and brooding (though he could have just been teasing Raph for having such an unexpected choice as his favorite comic book.)
Raph: Hey, that food has real depth and emotion man!
