Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 S 1 E 6 Darkness On The Edge Of Town

Go To

After a blackout knocks out the lights in the lair, the Turtles go topside to investigate. Once above ground, the Turtles encounter the mysterious Foot Clan gathering ancient artifacts from around the city.

First appearance of the Sword of Tengu

This episode provides examples of:

  • Badass Bookworm: The two Foot technicians do a fairly decent job against the turtles.
  • Big Blackout: The central premise for the episode
  • Cool Board: The first time we get to see Mikey using his signature skateboard.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Oroku Saki has sarashi wrapped around his abdomen because that's where Ch'rell, the Utrom sits and the exo-suit has a window there.
    • Once Saki grasps the Sword of Tengu with his bare hand, he doesn't get electrocuted like Don does later on.
  • Hollywood Darkness: Although the supposed darkness is a major plot point for the episode, the city really doesn't look any darker than it does in other episodes...
  • Kingpin in His Gym: Oroku Saki.
  • Not So Above It All: The Turtles enjoy some extreme sports in the sewers, then in the middle of their lair. Leo doesn't discourage any of this, in fact, he too is having fun with his brothers. When the lights go out, Leo even cracks a joke at Mike's expense.
(Master Splinter lights a match and ignites a candle)
Leo: Keep that flame away from Mikey! He scarfed down a whole chili pizza for dinner.
  • Power Glows: The Sword of Tengu, when in use.
  • Rollerblade Good: For this show, Raph's signature urban sports gear are roller blades, which he uses even in battle.
  • Sarashi: Oroku Saki has clothing wrapped around his abdomen.
  • Uncertain Doom: The Two Foot Technicians punished at the end. They did retrieve a valuable artifact despite failing to retrieve more, Baxter Stockman has been punished non-fatally for far greater failures, and they might be among the techs who appear in later episodes, although it's hard to tell given how they all look alike.
  • You Have Failed Me: The two Foot technicians who told Saki that they retrieved the artifact but lost the Sword of Tengu were (rightfully) terrified in delivering the news to him. Surprisingly, he does not punish them. He has Hun do it for him.
