Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S03E16 "The Four Musketurtles"

Go To

When Leonardo takes a bad hit during a fight with Bebop and Rocksteady, he gets a case of Identity Amnesia and starts believing he's D'Artagnan of The Three Musketeers. The other turtles and Splinter must humor his delusions if they want to have any chance of stopping Shredder from stealing the Star of Brazil, a gemstone that is made of Impervium.

Tropes

  • Backstab Backfire: Shredder attempts to backstab Krang by using the impervium force field generator for himself. It backfires as he's cramped into a small space and can't move because the generator was tuned to Krang's size.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Krang breaks the fourth wall by asking Shredder if they have time for a flashback before telling the impervium story.
  • Easy Amnesia: All it takes is getting hit by a flying jewelry stand to start Leonardo's amnesia, and a fall from a high place is enough to bring his memory back.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Splinter tells the turtles they have to humor Leonardo by wearing the musketeer outfits.
Raphael: I am not wearing lace with feathers, and that's final.
    Donatello: Same here.
    Michelangelo: Ditto.
(Cut to the Turtles dressed as musketeers)
    Raphael: I feel pretty stupid.
    Donatello: Same here.
    Michelangelo: Ditto.
  • Identity Amnesia: When Leonardo loses his memory, he starts to believe he's D'Artagnan of The Three Musketeers.
  • Ironic Echo: After Splinter tells the turtles they must humor Leonardo's belief that he is D'Artagnan and they are the Three Musketeers, Leonardo calls Master Splinter a servant and tells him to clean the lair up. Splinter is offended until Raphael reminds him that he just said they had to humor Leonardo.
  • Mistaken Identity: One case that's completely unrelated to Leonardo's delusions is Irma assuming that Shredder is one of the Mardi Gras carnival goers in a costume, even as she's getting kidnapped by him.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: April looks very pretty in her Mardi Gras costume as a French noblewoman. No wonder Leonardo believes her to be the Queen of France when he sees her first after coming to with amnesia.
  • Unobtainium: The Star of Brazil is a stone called impervium, the lost element of Dimension X.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Conceptually, the episode's premise is similar to Don Quixote, which also involves a protagonist deluded into believing he was a knight after reading books on the subject.
