Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S02E06 "The Case of the Killer Pizzas"

Go To

Krang gives Shredder a collection of Dimension X eggs that resemble meatballs to plant on pizzas for the Turtles in order to destroy them. When the pizzas meant for the Turtles end up getting sent away to a delivery instead, the green foursome must stop the creatures that emerge before they run amok in the city.

Tropes

  • Anything but That!: When Michelangelo was about to hit him with a pizza, Shredder cries out "No! Not that!".
Shredder: (After getting splattered by the pizza) Oh, I hate anchovies!
  • The Bus Came Back: Rocksteady and Bebop finally appear again in this episode after not being seen since the season premiere, setting up their return from Dimension X in the next episode.
  • Butter Face: According to Rocksteady, the creatures look better than one of Bebop's old girlfriends.
  • Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: When Raphael knocks Shredder out of the way of being stomped on by one of the creatures, he claims "You Fool! I had him right where I wanted him!".
    Raphael: Sure, you did.
  • Cut the Juice: When Donatello's exercise machine proves too much for Michelangelo, Raphael uses his sai to knock out its power cord. Splinter applauds him for his strategy.
Splinter: Sometimes sabotaging an enemy's line of supply is more effective than a frontal attack.
  • Enemy Mine: When the creatures go out of control and attack everything on sight, the Turtles are forced to team up with Shredder to fight them off.
  • Faint in Shock: Irma faints twice in the episode. First when a monster hatches from April's pizza, and later when she spots one of the monsters fully grown.
Vernon: You can't take her anywhere.
  • Gambit Roulette: Shredder and Stockman planting the eggs on prize pizzas and then rigging the contest so the Turtles got them seemed clever. Unfortunately, unexpected variables such as two of the prize pizzas being taken and replaced to fulfill an order and the Turtles giving the third one to April delayed the plan.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Vernon chides Irma for cowardly fainting, despite fleeing the sewers to look after himself almost immediately after.
  • It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: Donatello meekly says this about knocking Baxter's controller into the water, which ended up causing the creatures to go out of control and the remote was the only thing that could subdue them.
  • Miracle-Gro Monster: All it takes is a dip in sewer water for the creatures to reach their full growth.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Donatello smacks Baxter's remote used to control the creatures into the sewer stream. While the villains can't control them anymore, Shredder calls out Donnie's tactic because now it only makes them attack both friend and foe alike.
  • Nuclear Mutant: The first Dimension X creature we see hatches from an egg that incubates in Erma's microwave.
  • Pie in the Face: Michaelangelo does this to Shredder with a pizza pie. With anchovies.
  • Rigged Contest: Baxter does this at the start of the episode, so the turtles get the pizza with the alien eggs. Unfortunately, they give April and Irma that instead after dealing with Shredder.
  • Tempting Fate: Just before Michelangelo goes up against Donatello's exercise machine made from a washing machine, Splinter cautions him to study his opponent.
Michelangelo: (Trades blows with the machine's fighting dummy) Ah, no sweat Splinter. The day I can't kick butt on some washing machine is the day I hang up my (the washer switches to high, causing the dummy to pummel him) NNNNUNNCHUCCKKKKS!
  • Title Drop: When the Turtles burst into April's apartment looking for the monster that hatched, Leonardo asks "So where's that killer pizza?"
April: It's not the pizza, it's the creature that came with the pizza.
Raphael: Hey, sounds like a great title for a horror movie.
  • Xenomorph Xerox: The Dimension X creatures are clearly based on the Xenomorphs from the Alien series.
