Recap / Teen Titans S 4 E 12 The End Part Two

Go To

It's The End of the World as We Know It and Raven has been destroyed in summoning her father to earth. The four remaining Titans and Slade try to defeat Trigon. The only reasons they haven't been wiped out with the rest of the planet are the Ring of Azar, which Slade somehow acquired, and the "farewell blessing" Raven left the Titans to protect them from her father. While Starfire, Cyborg, and Beast Boy fight Trigon, Robin ends up working with Slade to find Raven, or whatever's left of her...

Tropes:

  • Back-to-Back Badasses: Robin and Slade versus Trigon's fire-demons.
  • Betrayal Insurance: Expecting Trigon to go back on his deal to restore his body, Slade wore a magic ring that preserved him in his current form, even as the fire-powers he acquired were taken from him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Cyborg saves Robin from falling off the building in "Birthmark".
  • Character Development: While traveling to find Raven, Robin learns that Slade is really in an undead state, and greatly diminished of his former prowess. At one point during their journey, Slade bitterly lamp shades how far he's fallen from the great villain he used to be, unwittingly offering Robin an opportunity to twist the knife in his old foe. Instead, Robin sternly voices that saving Raven is more important than wasting his breath on kicking Slade while he's down. This speaks volumes of how far Robin has come from being obsessed with Slade.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Slade when the Teen Titans angrily turn down his help to destroy Trigon.
Slade: Yes, you seem to have everything under control.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Slade's mask is knocked off at one point, revealing himself to be a walking skeleton.
  • Enemy Mine: After being betrayed by Trigon, Slade enlists the Titans to counter back. They certainly weren't interested, but eventually agree to do so to get Raven back. Robin and Slade teaming up to travel into the underworld to find Raven, and get Slade's human body back respectively.
  • Enemy Without: Trigon creates, or rather draws out dark mirrors of Cyborg, Beast Boy and Starfire based on either negative emotions.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Played with. While Slade states that even he wouldn't wish what Trigon did upon the world, he makes it clear he has no remorse for his actions and is only helping the Titans beat him because it suits his needs.
  • Exact Words: Trigon betrays Slade because the man was supposed to bring Raven to the demon. Since Raven surrendered on her own, Trigon sought no reason to keep his end of the bargain and tells Slade that his purpose is done.
  • Fantastic Aesop: Slade provides one: "Never make a deal with an interdimensional demon without a little protection." This is a good lesson that everyone should learn.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Slade words it that since Trigon has technically won, the Titans are not expected to win or even survive. If they are going to undo the world's devastation, they'll need to endure long enough for him and Robin to achieve their goals.
  • It's What I Do: Robin chews out Slade for helping Trigon destroy the world and constantly making people suffer with his actions. Slade casually responds, "It's what I do best."
  • Ship Tease: Just before Robin goes down to hell with Slade, he says goodbye to Cyborg and Beast Boy while giving Starfire a several-seconds-long hug. They also share a Held Gaze before Slade calls for Robin to hurry up.
  • Taken for Granite: The entire Earth and everything on it are turned to stone upon Trigon's arrival.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The Titans and Slade have no choice but to work together to defeat Trigon.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Even though they did join forces at the time, Robin still blames Slade for the apocalypse pointing out that Slade served Trigon.
Robin: So why did you do it? For money? Status? Those dark powers?
Slade: Not everything is so cut and dry, Robin.
Robin: Selling out our world for your own personal gain seems pretty cut and dry to me.
Slade: With or without me, there was no stopping this.
Robin: But you played a part. And just like everything else you've ever done, it's made people suffer.
  • Touched by Vorlons: When she knocked them unconscious in the previous episode, Raven gave her friends some of her power, which protected them from becoming Taken for Granite with the rest of the Earth. Trigon describes it as "a farewell blessing from [his] daughter".
  • Villain Respect: When Robin says their Enemy Mine changes nothing after what's happened, Slade tells him he wouldn't expect it any other way.
  • Wham Shot: Robin manages to find a still-alive Raven...in child form.
    • Earlier, Slade's mask breaks, and he reveals to Robin (and the audience) that he's not much more than a walking skeleton.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Robin's response when Slade's undead status is exposed.
Slade: Let's just say I'm... currently incomplete.
  • World-Wrecking Wave: Trigon does this mere moments after his arrival on Earth, turning it into a literal hellscape with every living person turned into stone, save for the remaining Titans.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Robin calls Slade out on helping Trigon destroy the world. Slade responds that while he did play a part in events, even without his involvement, it wouldn't have changed anything; Trigon's coming was inevitable.
