Love comes in all shapes and sizes.
Cad Bane has broken Ziro the Hutt out of prison, and the Hutt Council demands that Ziro tell them where he's hidden vital — and incriminating — information: a holodiary detailing the criminal activities of the five Hutt families. Ziro makes another daring escape with the help of his estranged (and strange) lover, Sy Snootles. Bane is back on the Hutt's trail — but he's not the only one. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Quinlan Vos need to find him too. A chase through the swamps of Nal Hutta leads the pursuers to Ziro's enormous mother, Mama the Hutt, who points them to the direction of Teth. It is here, in the secret grave of Ziro's father, that the fugitive Hutt has hidden the diary. When he retrieves it, Snooty reveals her true colors: She's a deadly woman scorned and a bounty hunter for hire. After killing Ziro, she returns the journal to her client: Jabba the Hutt.
Tropes:
- A Day in the Limelight: Quinlan Vos gets his time to shine in this episode... which also becomes a bit of an amusing application of
Hilarious in Hindsight as this is his only appearance in The Clone Wars, barring a background cameo in "Destiny" three seasons later. - Actually Pretty Funny: Vos gives Obi-Wan a wild smile after the latter makes a bad quip against him.
- Anachronic Order: This episode takes place directly after "Hostage Crisis" (1:22) and is the last part of the Ziro the Hutt arc.
- Ambiguously Gay: Gardulla is shown enjoying the company of a female Twi'lek dancer.
- Ascended Extra: Sy Snootles
(who was a background character in Return of the Jedi) receives an expanded role in this episode. - Badass Normal: Cad Bane, full stop, who manages to hold is own against two Jedi Masters long enough to reach his ship and escape.
- Bad Guy Bar: The club where the Hutt Council holds its meeting on Nal Hutta has a classic 1920's mafia club vibe.
- The Bad Guy Wins: Jabba the Hutt is the only real winner in the episode, successfully having Ziro killed and getting his hands on the holodiary.
- Blasting It Out of Their Hands: Obi-Wan disarms Cad Bane of his one remaining blaster by deflecting a bolt into it.
- Can't Kill You, Still Need You: The Hutt Clan would dearly love to just kill Ziro, but his hidden holodiary of their various criminal dealings makes killing him a dicey proposition. Jabba cleverly gets past this problem by having Sy Snootles get Ziro to lead her to the holodiary, then kill him.
- Chekhov's Gun: The cup that Ziro drinks from before tossing it aside is the clue that tips Quinlan Vos off to his presence on Nal Hutta when he uses his Psychometry abilities later in the episode.
- Crack Pairing: In-universe, the episode reveals that Sy Snootles and Ziro once had a "relationship", even though both are gross and unappealing characters who are not physically compatible. The moral just seems to lampshade how weird this is.
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Bane gets a hold of Vos' lightsaber and uses it to fight Obi-Wan. Not being Force-sensitive and having no training with a lightsaber, Bane is disarmed in seconds.
- Death by Woman Scorned: When Ziro grew tired of Snootles, he sent her away to Nal Hutta, breaking her heart. After she learns about Ziro being held prisoner in the same club she is working in, she helps him escape, follows him to the MacGuffin of the episode, and kills him.
- Dumb Muscle: The Gamorrean guards are duped by Sy Snootles with ridiculous ease.
- Dynamic Entry: Quinlan Vos likes these. When he arrives at the Jedi Temple, he doesn't wait for his ride to land and simply jumps down to the platform. Also, see below at There Was a Door.
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Ziro. He even held back from telling his mother that his father ran off and later died, not wanting to break her heart.
- Evil Laugh: The normally stoic Cad Bane lets out a cackle after getting a hold of Vos' lightsaber.
- Fanservice: The dance number on Nal Hutta, performed by three beautiful, different coloured Twi'lek females wearing little more than loincloths and headpieces. Needless to say, it's very eye pleasing. That said...
- Fan Disservice: After several shots of the scantily clad Twi'leks, they step aside to reveal Sy Snootles as the main attraction... Not to mention later in the episode she and Ziro are shown kissing...
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed, but Cody and Obi-Wan's dialogue at the start of the episode implies that Quinlan is not necessarily anyone's favorite person to pal around with.
- The Guards Must Be Crazy: Sy Snootles gets two guards to start beating each other up by claiming that Gardulla wants to know which one of them is stronger.
- Hidden Depths: Who expected Sy Snootles, of all beings, was capable of such ruthlessness?
- Huge Girl, Tiny Guy:
- The remains of Ziro's father are roughly his size, while Mama the Hutt is easily three times their size. Whether she was that size when Ziro was conceived is (mercifully) unclear.
- They're fairly close in height, but Ziro is easily three or four times Sy Snootles' mass.
- Karma Houdini: Cad Bane escapes free and clear, his only loss being failing to collect the bounty on Ziro.
- Sy gets away with killing Ziro and giving Jabba the holodiary
- Karma Houdini Warranty: After Ziro seemingly cheated karma back in "Hostage Crisis", here, he gets his just desserts.
- Interspecies Romance: Ziro the Hutt and Sy Snootles (who is a Pa'lowick) once had a relationship.
- Large and in Charge: Mama the Hutt is arguably the largest Hutt introduced in Star Wars canon. She makes Jabba (her grandson) look in shape by comparison.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Ziro's death, twice over; he's killed by his scorned ex-lover, Sy Snootles, and it's revealed that Sy had been hired by Jabba, who's son Ziro had kidnapped.
- MacGuffin: The holodiary, which contains an extensive list of the crimes of the Hutt Council.
- The Mafia: The Hutt Council. Marlo the Hutt even looks like the Godfather, and is named after Marlon Brando.
- Noodle Incident: Quinlan Vos alludes to a past encounter he had with Cad Bane.
- Odd Couple: The prim and proper Obi-Wan Kenobi and hotheaded and wild Quinlan Vos. They work well enough together, but the episode gets a fair bit of comedy out of the set-up.
- Outliving One's Offspring: Mama the Hutt speaks of Ziro's late brother, Ebor. Ziro himself dies before the end of the episode.
- Psychometry: Quinlan Vos has this ability and uses it to confirm that Ziro had been in the Hutts' club not long before their arrival.
- Pun: Obi-Wan to Vos while they're both hanging off a cliff face:"I never did enjoy hanging out with you."
- Shout-Out:
- The musical number in Gardulla's palace is a tribute to the opening scene of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
- Mama's housekeeper droids are a homage to *batteries not included.
- "That's just your opinion, man."
- Ziro's Last Words are "What a world, what a world!"
- Snark-to-Snark Combat: Obi-Wan and Vos spend half the episode snarking at each other
