A Day Without Tears

Original air date: 3/22/2010 (produced in 2009)

Squidward bets that SpongeBob cannot go a whole day without crying.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Everyone cries sometimes, but it's important to control it.
  • The Bet: SpongeBob agrees on Squidward's bet to avoid crying before midnight. If he loses, he has to do Squidward's chores for a year; if he wins, Squidward has to come for a sleepover.
  • Cathartic Crying: When SpongeBob accepts Squidward's bet, he tries his best to not cry until midnight. When Squidward tries to cheat by telling SpongeBob a very sad story, SpongeBob succeeds in keeping from crying by using his body to hold in all of the tears. As soon as midnight comes, however, SpongeBob bawls his eyes out and his tears flood Bikini Bottom.
  • Character Development: SpongeBob's behavior towards Squidward is unsurprisingly more alert and vigilant than how he acted back in "Gullible Pants". While in the latter, Squidward took advantage of SpongeBob's gullibility and he is foolish enough to fall for every trick; in this episode, he actually sees right through Squidward's tricks, and he manages to control himself and resist every effort. Even when he begins to lose it when Squidward tells him a sad story, he manages to hold in every single tear until right after the midnight chime, thus he wins the bet and lets it all out.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: SpongeBob tries to avoid crying, though to no avail; however when Squidward tries to cheat at the bet, SpongeBob miraculously manages to resist every try and hold in his tears.
  • Determinator: No matter what Squidward does, SpongeBob manages to hold in his tears all the way to midnight. Especially when SpongeBob sees Gary sleeping and is about to, but he immediately snaps out and declares, "There will be no tears in this house tonight!".
  • Failed a Spot Check: Apparently, SpongeBob had no idea he cried that much. However in "No Weenies Allowed", he was at least a little aware when he mentions he stubbed his toe and cried for 20 whole minutes.
  • Failure Is the Only Option: NOTHING stops SpongeBob from trying not to cry after he takes up the bet with Squidward, so all of his efforts to cheat at the bet end up failing anyway.
  • Freak Out: SpongeBob has a brief one when Squidward makes him watch bad news reports on TV, prompting him to quickly change the channel to something less sad so he won't cry and win the bet. When he ends up watching the end of a show where the characters cry Tears of Joy, he declares he had enough and throws the TV out the window.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • When SpongeBob is trying not to cry over the broadcast that someone lost their snail, he blinks and a few tears seem to fly off.
    • The sad song Squidward plays is titled "Hearts and Flowers (Or Some Such Sad Song)".
    • When coming up about the story of the "Sad Little Angler", Squidward ends up flipping to Jack and Jill.
  • Freudian Slip:
Squidward: Don't be long. My secret weapon is waiting. Heh heh heh...
    SpongBob: You said something, Squidward?
Squidward: Oh, I just said, "Relax and enjoy the song."
  • Good Is Not Dumb: NOTHING stops SpongeBob from trying to go all day without crying. Despite his naivety and gullibility, he manages to put it all aside when Squidward tries to entice him further, to the point he even finds a way to quickly snap out of it.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Squidward rightfully tells SpongeBob that he cries over the smallest things.
  • Lampshade Hanging: When Squidward pulls up the chalkboard.
Squidward: So far today, and it's not even 2 O'Clock yet, you have cried 43 times!
SpongBob: And... you wrote that number on a chalkboard?
    Squidward: Yes!
    SpongBob: Why?
Squidward: *Beat* ...I... have no idea.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For trying many attempts to make SpongeBob cry, Squidward loses the bet and has to spend the night with him, and cries about it.
  • Match Cut: The video of SpongeBob crying consists of the different backgrounds changing behind him to whatever situation he's crying over. Done again with Squidward at the very end as he is forced to sleep over with SpongeBob after he wins the bet.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: SpongeBob cries when he stubs his toe.
  • Minor Insult Meltdown: SpongeBob cries when Squidward harshly yells "Krabby Patty nothing!" at him a couple of times.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • The first few times Squidward tries to make SpongBob cry, he manages to snap out moments later.
    • While SpongBob is watching TV, the news brings up reports with sad stories, leading to the sponge about to cry over them, but then they of which suddenly end with good outcomes, and he's immediately smiling and cheerful again. When the last two don't end happily though, SpongBob immediately goes from worried to anxious as he changes the channel, followed by full-on complete fury as he sees a TV show end with the father and son in Tears of Joy, leading him to throw the TV out the window before snapping right back to his happy self.
  • Ocular Gushers: SpongBob releases these in the video Squidward showed. In the end after midnight, SpongeBob unleashes gigantic streams of tears that flood Bikini Bottom.
  • Overly Long Gag: The video of SpongBob crying repeatedly.
  • Prone to Tears: SpongeBob as usual, but this is a plot point.
  • Running Gags:
    • SpongeBob crying nonstop.
    • Squidward tries to force SpongeBob into crying, but he resists it.
    • The Bikini Bottom Choir showing up.
  • Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: In the video where SpongeBob cries in different places, he says "Boo-hoo. Boo-hoo. Sob. Whimper."
  • Shout-Out: Two emotional songs that SpongeBob hears on the radio are by Eely Dan and Lionel Fishie, aquatic riffs on Jazz Fusion duo Steely Dan and R&B artist Lionel Richie.
  • Sleep Cute: Gary sleeping, which almost makes SpongeBob cry Tears of Joy until he immediately snaps right out of it.
  • Slumber Party: If SpongeBob wins the bet, Squidward has to come to a sleepover at the pineapple. It ends up fulfilled in the end.
  • Sudden Soundtrack Stop: When SpongeBob immediately controls himself when he is about to cry Tears of Joy over Gary sleeping.
  • Tears of Joy:
    • The last story on the TV ends with the father of a little boy put his job off for a bit to play catch with his son, and the two start to cry as they proclaim their love for each other. This happened to be the final straw for SpongeBob, leading him to throw the TV out the window so he doesn't lose the bet.
    • Earlier, SpongeBob almost sheds these when he sees Gary sleeping on the floor after Squidward notes it. He immediately snaps out of it, vowing not to lose the bet.
  • Thinking Out Loud: SpongeBob does it when he hears Squidward say under his breath that he wants to win the bet.
I am not gonna cry...I am not gonna cry...
  • Trivial Tragedy: While watching TV, when the news anchor mentions "sad news for Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy fans", Squidward turns the volume up and the anchor says that The Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Show will only be played seven times a day instead of eight. Not wanting to lose the bet, SpongeBob quickly changes the channel.
  • Trying Not to Cry: SpongeBob tries to avoid crying to win the bet against Squidward, who ironically, tries to get him to do it to lose. He soon does cry as midnight came and thus wins the bet.
  • Unknown Rival: Averted, SpongBob is aware Squidward wants him to lose after he quips at it after leaving the Krusty Krab, as shown when he is able to overhear Squidward say he wants to win the bet, prompting him to become more determined than ever.
  • Watching the Sunset: Squidward's first attempt to get SpongeBob to cry is have him watch the sunset with him. By the time it's over, he snaps out.
  • When the Clock Strikes Twelve: Midnight is the deadline for SpongeBob's bet, and he does all he can to hold in his tears until then.

Boating Buddies 2: The Mrs. Puff Edition

Original air date: 3/23/2010 (produced in 2009)

Mrs. Puff is forced to work at the Krusty Krab.

Tropes:

  • Arc Words: "Don't forget to read the note!"
  • Blackmail: Mr. Krabs makes Mrs. Puff work for him under pain of telling her parole officer she smashed his restaurant with her boat, which could get her sent away for a very long time.
  • Butt-Monkey: Mrs. Puff.
  • Downer Ending: Mrs. Puff is sent to driving school where SpongeBob is the teacher.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Mrs. Puff is arrested for littering. Ironically, considering what she did earlier and at the start of the episode would get her in even more trouble, she opts to Confess to a Lesser Crime.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mrs. Puff quits the Krusty Krab after SpongeBob annoys her so much.
  • Series Continuity Error: Mr. Krabs doesn't recognize Mrs. Puff despite their interaction in "Krusty Love".
  • Shame If Something Happened: Mr. Krabs says this about revealing Mrs. Puff trashed his place.
  • Unishment: Subverted. It looked like Mrs. Puff is glad to go to jail than to put up with SpongeBob, but as she is sent to driving school, she learns that SpongeBob will teach the class.
