Clark leaps into action after Oliver is attacked by a crowd for being a vigilante, and Slade Wilson returns.


Tropes present in the episode:

  • Cape Busters: The Vigilante Registration Agency, formed to enforce the Vigilante Registration Act.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Clark, Lois, and the Justice League rendered unconscious by a strange object while attending Carter's funeral in Egypt.
  • Destination Defenestration: An explosion sends Lois falling out a window. Fortunately, Hawkman swoops down to rescue her.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Hawkman, after being stabbed by Slade, dives out the office window to save a falling Lois, all while his wings are on fire.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Hawkman. He even cracks a joke as he lays dying.
    Hawkman: Hey, I'm an expert at dying.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Despite being fatally injured, Hawkman saves Lois from falling to her death.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Carter catches Clark investigating Slade after Clark declared that the heroes should go underground until the whole VRA business is resolved. Then Oliver comes in, and he and Carter gripe at one another.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Clark to Hawkman before the latter dies.
  • Mythology Gag: This line from Slade:
    Slade: The reaper can swing his sickle at me, but I'm beyond death's stroke now.
  • Oh, Crap!: Lois when she steps off of her elevator ride with Lieutenant Trotter and realizes that she, Tess, and Emil are now (officially or unofficially) in the custody of the VRA.
  • Putting on the Reich: The VRA's uniforms resemble those worn by the Nazis.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Clark uses a Crystal of El to imprison Slade in the Phantom Zone for the time being.
  • Villain of the Week: Slade Wilson
  • We Can Rule Together: Slade tries to convince Clark to come work for him, but Clark won't have any of it.
