Wanting to be rid of her meteor power, Chloe makes an appointment with Dr. Curtis Knox, a scientist who has devised a way to remove metahumans' abilities; unfortunately for Chloe, he has a sinister ulterior motive. Clark is caught in the middle when J'onn J'onzz claims that Kara cannot be trusted.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Analogy Backfire: When Lex is late to a meeting with Knox, Knox tells him that Mussolini once executed a man for trains running late. Lex points out that Mussolini lost.
  • Back for the Dead: Sasha Woodman, who was last seen in Season 1's "Drone," returns in this episode, only to end up dead at Knox's hands.
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: After Chloe compares him to Jack the Ripper, Knox claims he actually was Jack the Ripper.
Chloe: I came here for help, not to be cut open by some Jack the Ripper wannabe!
Knox: I was Jack the Ripper.
  • Deadly Doctor: Knox, who's harvesting organs from metahumans to make his wife immortal.
  • Expy: Knox is based on Vandal Savage.
  • Fantastic Slur: Kara derisively calls J'onn "Red Eyes."
  • Fantastic Racism: Kara towards Martian Manhunter.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Chloe when she sees Kara and Jimmy together.
  • Jack the Ripoff: Subverted. Chloe tries to pull this on Knox, but Knox says that he was Jack the Ripper.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Said verbatim by Knox after he accidentally destroys the equipment keeping his wife alive.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Dean Cain's character, Curtis Knox, shares the same initials as Clark Kent.
    • Knox's line to Clark about "Your powers might be far beyond those of mortal men" mirrors the comics description of Superman.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Knox draws a comparison between himself and Clark, in that they possess superhuman abilities.
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Also said verbatim by Knox while holding his dying wife.
  • Remake Cameo: Guest star Dean Cain, who plays Dr. Curtis Knox, previously played Clark Kent/Superman in Lois & Clark.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: J'onn maintains that Kara cannot be trusted because her father, Zor-El, attempted to murder Jor-El back on Krypton.
J'onn: Your cousin's arrival cannot be taken lightly, Kal-El.
Clark: I went to see my father. He gave me the same warning. But I don't get it; she's my cousin, the only Kryptonian family I've got besides a disembodied voice from the arctic.
J'onn: And she could use your longing for family against you. She's dangerous. Her father tried to assassinate Jor-El.
    Clark: They were brothers.
John Jones: Their hatred for one another was stronger than any familial bond. Does Kara have her crystal?
Clark: Not anymore. It was in her ship when it exploded, but now it's missing. I've been trying to help her find it, but we've had no luck.
J'onn: If she gets to that crystal, everything you hold dear in this world could be lost. You must find the crystal before Kara. Trust is a luxury you cannot afford.
  • Villain of the Week: Dr. Curtis Knox, an immortal Deadly Doctor.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Knox's fate after his fight with Clark is uncertain. What is known is that J'onn did something to make sure Knox doesn't hurt anyone else, and he tells Clark it's best they have a "don't ask, don't tell" arrangement when it comes to dealing with criminals.
Clark: What'd you do with Knox?
J'onn: Your father and I had a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it came to crime and punishment. I suggest we abide by the same rules.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Knox gives this kind of speech to Clark during their fight.
Clark: I won't let you kill anyone else.
Knox: I'd kill one thousand more to never have to be alone. You don't know the pain of living centuries, watching the women you love grow old and turn to dust! You and I are more alike than you think. I won't go through that again!
