Recap / Scrubs S 2 E 12 My New Old Friend

Go To

Since Elliot and J.D. have recently broken up, Elliot claims that it will be harder for J.D. to transition back to being friends than Elliot, which she then proves by tricking JD into taking his clothes off for her. Turk encourages J.D. to ask out the gift shop girl. It seems too soon, but Elliot encourages J.D. to do so. And he does.

Outside the hospital, Elliot discovers that her van has been stolen, with all her belongings inside. She starts talking to J.D. about it, but he then instantly heads off for a second date with Lisa the gift shop girl, leaving Elliot completely alone, feeling even worse. Later on, she gives him attitude about it. He says this is what she wanted. Elliot tells him, "she needed him as a friend." She claims to be okay, but he realizes she's putting up a front. He considers if he should go out for a date with Lisa or be a friend to someone he already loves.

Meanwhile, Mr. Corman the hypochondriac is back, and this time he thinks he has 'Yaba', but Dr. Cox and Carla are doubtful. Turk performs brain surgery on a patient (Mrs. Kaye), who reminds him of his grandmother. After the surgery Dr. Kelso tells Turk to revoke her driving license because of the surgery, a task which Turk can't do because he feels too close to his patient. Besides, she says that her reactions have not suffered. Mr. Corman's results all come back negative (suggesting he is completely healthy) but he still isn't convinced. So, to scare him, Dr Cox suggests a bone marrow test involving a giant painful needle. Mr. Corman accepts. Then the results of Mr. Corman's big needle test come back, and it turns out he is actually sick, with a rare form of cancer (To which he replies "Yeah.... I think I had that in college once").

Meanwhile, outside the hospital, Turk is talking to Dr. Kelso, and lies to him about revoking Mrs. Kay's License. Just as he does so, Mrs. Kay comes hurtling through the car park and ploughs into Kelso's car. Needless to say, Kelso is not happy.

  • Acquainted with Emergency Services: Mr. Corman has a urine sample ready and list of his vitals in a suitably sized case for when the doctors ask for it.
  • Addictive Foreign Soap Opera: Laverne treats JD and Elliot's drama as though it is this.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Dr. Kelso's wife drops him off and he is seen being pushed out of a moving car. Also, when Dr. Kelso tells Turk about everyone lying, he says how he himself lies when he tells his son he will be allowed to live at home after art school.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: JD and Elliot are fighting. Some of it stems from JD liking Elliot but not knowing where to draw the line in terms of friendship.
  • Blatant Lies: The whole point of the episode is how people will lie about their health and well-being for a variety of reasons. Turk goes through a whole gamut of patients telling obvious lies;
    Girl: I'm still a virgin.
    Turk: You're pregnant.
    Girl: Again?
    • JD discussing this with Turk at the end leads to his revelation that Elliot was lying when she said she's okay with her stuff being stolen, so he goes to comfort her at the end.
  • Break the Cutie: In the previous two episodes, Elliot spent some time living in her truck after her dad cut her off financially and due to work she didn't have time to find a place to live. She then spent time living awkwardly with Turk, Carla and also JD who had feelings for her that she didn't reciprocate. In this episode, she finally finds a place to live only to find her truck with all her stuff, including her childhood memories, has been stolen from the hospital car park.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Kelso is extremely nice to a patient, but as soon as they are out of earshot, he tells Turk to take away her license. He was right about the reason why, but refused to do it himself.
  • Like an Old Married Couple: Dr. Cox tells Carla off for not stopping him being a jerkass to Mr. Corman.
