Tropes

  • 10-Minute Retirement: After losing their makeup to the sauna challenge, Crimson and Ennui resign after nobody recognizes them without their makeup. They recover in time to join Owen, Noah, Jay and Mickey in the bottom three. They are the third-last team to complete the challenge.
  • Air Guitar: The second part of the race in this episode, involves doing air guitar in front of crowd of heavy-metal fans. Naturally, the Rockers complete this challenge first.
  • Brown Bag Mask: Both Crimson and Ennui wear these after losing their goth makeup, because they're embarrassed by their preppy appearance.
  • Compliment Backfire: Carrie and Devin give Crimson compliments on her non-goth appearance. Crimson reacts negatively, albeit more out of insecurity rather than anger.
  • Face Your Fears:
    • After quitting the race, Crimson and Ennui decide to face their fear of seeing each other without their goth makeup, deciding that it's the darkness inside that matters more than the darkness outside. However, the Goths see a gothic clothing store and the outfits in the window gives Ennui an idea, and it renews their confidence to return to the race.
    • Mickey attempts to face his fear of stage fright, only to be psyched out by Emma exploiting his germophobia.
  • Human Popsicle: Owen is covered in about two inches of ice after he jumps into the semi-frozen river to cool off after the sauna challenge.
  • Jerkass Ball: When it's down to the Reality Pros and the Adversity Twins, Emma psyches out Mickey to ensure that Noah can win.
  • Modesty Towel: Don, while introducing Finland, and the Finnish Don Box for the "Spa Day" all-in.
  • Naked People Are Funny: This is the only episode of TDRR to feature nudity. In this case, Don's towel falls off. Owen thinks everyone has to strip down, only for Noah to tell him that everyone must sit in the sauna fully clothed.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The singer that Ennui shows on his phone resembles Gene Simmons.
  • Performance Anxiety: Mickey has crippling stage fright due to an incident during a school play. His inability to overcome his fear ultimately costs him and Jay the race.
  • Plot Hole: Ryan performs the air guitar challenge, even though it was supposed to be Stephanie's turn (since he pulled the rickshaw in the last Botch or Watch). Yet, he and Stephanie didn't get a penalty.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the song "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" made famous by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Ennui gets them when a member of the audience calls him a preppie.
  • Rousing Speech: Owen gives one to Noah, which helps them both avoid elimination.
Owen: Racing with you has been the most fun ever. There's no one in the world I'd rather eat eyeballs with. But if we get eliminated, it's over for us and for you and Emma. Is that really what you want?
Noah: Gee, big guy, I... I don't know what to say...
Owen: Shhh. You need to stop worrying about being some girl's hero and be my hero.
  • Shrinking Violet: Without their goth makeup, Crimson and Ennui are more noticeably insecure and self-conscious about their appearance.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Several audience members wear face paint resembling members of KISS.
    • Ennui's temporary gothic look with the shades and coat is a reference to Ozzy Osbourne.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After barely scraping by for the entire race thus far, The Rockers win a leg.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Spud takes his shirt off and waves it around to flag down a taxi.
