Tropes

  • A Death in the Limelight: Both the Stepbrothers and the Rockers get heavily focused on here, and both teams end up eliminated by the end of the episode.
  • All for Nothing: The Stepbrothers find the albino bunny, which allows them to skip the task of finding 10 rabbits, but they still get eliminated because they're the last team to arrive to the Chill Zone.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Stephanie and Ryan's rabbits reproduce immediately after being put in the bag together, and their newborns look like smaller adult rabbits as opposed to realistically hairless newborn rabbits.
  • Bland-Name Product: A console called the "Gamebox" is mentioned, a combination of the Nintendo GameCube and the Xbox.
  • Boxing Kangaroo: Chet and Lorenzo mistake a kangaroo for an albino bunny and spend most of the episode trying to chase it down, getting beaten up all the while.
  • Brown Bag Mask: After finding a still-distraught Devin's crying too sad to watch, Don puts a paper bag with a picture of Devin smiling taped on over his head.
  • Destructive Savior: The racers are a little too eager to clear out the farm of rabbits, and do more damage than the rabbits were.
  • The Dog Bites Back: The kangaroo Chet and Lorenzo kept trying to capture comes back to destroy their glider.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Inverted. Though the Goths hate the rabbits for being fuzzy and adorable, when Ennui compares their pest status to a plague, he slowly realizes they might not be so bad.
  • Explosive Breeder: Ryan and Stephanie only manage to catch two rabbits instead of ten, it turns out that was all they needed. The father rabbit looks quite proud of himself and his many kits.
  • Five Stages of Grief: Parodied: Devin goes through, as Spud puts it, "seven stages of heartbreak".
  • Heroic BSoD: Devin goes through the "seven stages of heartbreak", as Spud puts it, after being dumped by Shelly.
  • Irony: According to Crimson, cute and fluffy animals are always cozying up to Ennui. They both find it adorable and thus hate it. The Daters (struggling to get their own bunnies) watch this in complete amazement.
  • Jerkass Ball: Carrie is extremely manipulative in this episode. She gets happy when Shelley dumps Devin because now she sees it as an opportunity to tell him that she loves him, even saying that he'll get over it, and purposely makes him angry so that he'll get over the "Seven Stages of Heartbreak" faster.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After Don announces this was a double elimination challenge and that the Rockers and Stepbrothers are both out, he's asked why he bothered checking the footage to see which team came in last. He remarks that he obviously forgot this was a double elimination.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The Travel Tip giver looks like "Crocodile" Dundee.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the phrase "down and out".
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Carrie has a very selfish reason for pushing Devin to through the seven stages of heartbreak, but he was in such extreme denial about the break-up that he had deluded himself into thinking that Shelly didn't say what had brought him to tears in the first place.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: The Rockers barely beating the Stepbrothers turns out to be pointless since they both get eliminated anyway.
  • Shout-Out: After cornering the bunny on the dock, MacArthur says "Look what's up on this dock", a play on "What's up, doc?", the Catchphrase of Bugs Bunny.
  • Snap Back: The Ice Dancers have changed back into their old pink outfits with no explanation.
  • Sore Loser: The Stepbrothers don't take their elimination very well, as they actively refuse to reminisce about their time there and vow to start their own show.
  • Start My Own: Chet and Lorenzo vow to start their own racing show after being eliminated.
Lorenzo: We hate this show. We're gonna make our own race show!
Chet: Yeah-yeah-yeah! And they're all be ninjas.
Lorenzo: And they're gonna be fireworks factories, in space!
  • Wham Episode: The challenge turns out to be a double elimination, resulting in both the Stepbrothers and Rockers being eliminated. As shocking as that is, there is also the Goths adopting a bunny and naming it Loki prompting the bunny to join the others as a contestant and by extension the first animal one ever.
